Overlanding is like backpacking, but instead of your feet carrying you over rugged terrain, it’s your vehicle. It’s all about the adventure of traversing rarely-traveled lands to remote destinations using an off-roading vehicle of your choice. Sound like fun? Here’s what you should know before embarking on an overlanding adventure.
Vehicle selection. First, you’re going to need a rugged, off-roading capable vehicle like a four-wheel drive SUV or truck that’s reliable and durable. Some of the most popular vehicles include Ford F-150, Toyota Tacoma, Jeep Wrangler, and Land Rover Defender.
Sleeping accommodations. While rooftop tents are a popular choice among overlanders, you can also use a traditional tent on the ground or in a truck bed, or set up a sleeping space inside your vehicle. As long as you’re comfortable and protected from the elements, you’ll be good to go.
Cooking. Your cooking gear can range from simple single-burner camping stoves or a cooler to fully-loaded travel kitchens, depending on your wants and needs. It’s best to start simple, and then add to your cooking gear as you become more comfortable with your setup.
Safety. Always pack at least one first aid kit for overlanding adventures, and know how to utilize all of the items inside of it. If you’re traveling with pets, you should have one for them as well.
Navigation. Don’t rely on your cell phone for maps and navigation. You should pre-download maps and even carry paper maps with you so you don’t get lost in areas without cell phone service. You should also consider bringing along a satellite receiver or satellite phone to communicate with the outside world in the event that you do get lost or stranded during your trek.
Recovery gear. The ability to get unstuck during an overlanding trip is imperative to your adventure. From tire repair kits to tow straps, winches, traction boards, and more, be sure you have the gear needed to recover your vehicle-and know how to safely use your equipment.
Tools. Pack tools that you need in order to work on your vehicle and any other equipment you brought along. Always carry the essentials you’ll need to get yourself out of an unexpected situation during your journey.
