Hey there, friends and neighbours. You've been asking, and now we're doing a deep dive into how we make music using the modes. We'll talk about each mode and how they relate to the key, and we'll get into what gives each mode its melodic characteristic. I think you're going to enjoy this one.
LET'S TAKE IT TO THE BASS!

Hi. Guitarist here. 1987 right handed guitar. 2005 left hd guitar. I appreciate using the ionian as a bass to build the other modes on as its a positive feeling which is relaxing physically. In guitar there is often a focus on minor, diminished, pentatonic scales which to me is restrictive. Several weeks ago i realized i was holding the pick wrong and am using lighter picks(0.6, 0.71, 0.88 nothing above 1 mm) which impacts the fret hand memory due to pick flex. For years i used a 1.6 mm pick and was frustrated in idea generation. Thinner picks allow for fret hand to keep up, my hands are strong and see the delay a thin pick provides as lessening frustration. I mention this as you use fingers as plectrums but some bassists use picks. Feel of the instrument matters in using theory to say something. I like the part where you can use diff modes to descend to the ionian. I find major and minor very boring your information will help me train and incorporate diff emotions. I play left and right handed as that elicits diff emotions too. Playing left hand guitars feels very different for perceptual time. Ive memorized the modal idea and will use that as i know most major keys what interests me is what chord progressions can be used by individ notes. I was using the aeolian as an idea upon which to build scales. Your info is appreciated.

This is exactly what I needed with respect to modes! Thank you, Rich! Would also love to see an example on how the modes are used in chord changes in songs. Currently I've only been able to see them in a soloing context. I might also be overloading myself with lessons and not using what I already have at my disposal. Appreciate you always RB!

Hi Rich, thanks again for this great video. You can't talk enough about using the modes. Your video's about it made my start practising over and over the last few months, trying to figure out this concept. It took me awhile, but once I understood it a new world opened up. It took my bassplaying to another level. So if you have more to tell us about using the modes, please do so on this channel. Thanks again and looking forward to more modes-stuff, 🙂

I like this lesson. I had been trying to do a fill when playing in a major key by going up to locrian mode just because it has a nice flavor. I never perfected it, but this lesson seems to be the same sort of idea and each different mode has an interesting sound to it. Great advice.

Great lesson! Could you do a lesson about how to get from intermediate bass player (stuck in one place practicing 2 octave scales, arepeggios, warm-up exercises, improvising and playing a bass line created on a fly to a backing track) to the advanced bass player and what to do, what to learn, what to practice, some theory to become advanced, some scale and arpeggio exercises but for the advanced bass player? IT WOULD BE SO COOL! And many people would benefit from this lesson. A genre playing lessons would also be GREAT for example how to play rock on bass, how to play metal on bass, how to play soul on bass, how to play motown on bass, how to play country on bass, how to play fusion (jazz-rock) on bass, how to play funk on bass and of course how to play jazz on bass guitar and how to start easily with walking bass lines and slowly become more fluent in playing walking bass (everything for intermediate/early advanced bass players) ! Could you please do lessons like this? It would be awesome! You are a great teacher and thank you for everything! I hope you will do lessons like these ideas I gave you in this comment. WE WOULD LOVE THAT! Greetings from Poland, Mike :)

Hey Rich! This is an incredible video, thank you so much for your time and education. Could you also make a video about bringing in modal patterns when they aren’t an extension of the original key? For example, how might I bring in a D dorian idea in a key that isn’t C major?

I was hoping you would get to this. Assuming that a tune has no weird (altered) chords, is a tune just a collection of modes with different root notes? For example, is a 1-4-5 tune in G essentially noodling on the Ionian, Lydian, and Mixolydian modes, since they all contain notes that are diatonic to the key? This would be a good topic to cover in a future lesson: how to use the modes in a song. Thanks again, Rich.
@richbrownbass
@richbrownbass 11 месяцев назад
You're exactly right. Although, with that particular chord progression, you're probably playing a traditional Blues. In which case, all 3 chords (1-4-5) are dominant (Mixolydian). But on something like a 1-6-2-5 progression, the corresponding modes work perfectly. Thank you so much for the donation!🙏🏾❤
@meisenman
@meisenman 11 месяцев назад
Yes, I considered the blues exception, but you got my point. 👍🏻 It’s starting to make sense. I always been reluctant to solo unless I”m surprised with a “Take it!”, and even then I usually just keep the basic groove going. I hope to be able to do something with this excellent information.

@richbrownbass
@richbrownbass 8 месяцев назад
Of course I did! Why wouldn’t anyone want to be able to access any scale anywhere on the fretboard?
@lostpulsar
@lostpulsar 8 месяцев назад
@@richbrownbass not saying you did it wrong, but if you play the "dorian" fill on G chord and end on G note you are always playing the "ionian" mode. The difference is, of course, subtle, but that's the reason why people don't understand the modes and your video does not clear it (you gave a hint at the end but very faintly). One might ask, If you are always playing the same scale, why call it differently? Right? I guess this argument requires more than just a quick video to be explained correctly, that's the reason for my comment. I understand what you say because I've learned what modes are, but for those who haven't, this can lead to more confusion. Just my 2 cents. Btw, I love your videos : )
