I've got one, avoid using songs that have that "hey!" vocal sample in it. I can't tell you how many demo reels I've watched that has music with that "hey!" in it, I wish I made a compilation to show this

Hi Hayley! Always love your videos ❤ I have 2 questions: is there one best way to put credits under your showreel (I couldn't find an example so I have a list of timing+role+project name. Not sure, maybe there's some standard for this?). Second question, will you do more showreel review videos in the future? Watching them helps sooo much! (and of course i'd submit my own hehe) Thanks for the great content!! ❤

Hey, thanks so much! So for your first question, it depends on the 'brand' of your website I guess! We've seen people put it in their actual showreel, or in the example shown it was underneath! You could even have some kind of 'accordion' which could show full credits when you click, but otherwise is a list of what you mentioned? Just an idea! Of course we will be doing! There's a link in the description to submit your showreel for review! We do get absolutely LOADS so it might be a while until we get through them all!😂

Thanks for another awesome video! So I'm building my skills as a 3D motion designer. I have some great stand-alone shots from personal projects, but no paid client work, yet. I have enough of those single shots to fill a reel, but I don't have 4-6 whole projects to show on my portfolio. Do you think a showreel alone is enough to start getting work? Or, do you think I should also focus on creating some personal projects that are whole, projects that look like full cohesive client projects? Thank you for your input!

Hey! Thank you so much! I think a mixture is a good idea, but then again, just get your reel out there! If you're able to make a reel with your personal projects, then go for it! We did a video recently about a showreel made up entirely of personal projects, and it looked great! If it's something you want to be hired for, you could even do a couple of typography frames - or ask ChatGPT to give you some fake briefs to do when you can :) This way, you can slowly start to build out your portfolio :)

@@MotionHatch Thank you for the advice! I love the idea of using ChatGPT to come up with fake briefs! I do best when I have some creative limits, so having a brief like that would really help me be productive.

Its been a year since I've updated my show reel. Would this apply to VFX artists who specialize outside of motion design? Also is there a video on how a motion designers resume be formated? That'd be great help! Thank you for your time and these awesome videos!

Hey! Thanks so much for your lovely comment! It definitely applies to VFX showreels, and I'd really emphasise the credits section when working in the VFX space since a lot of people likely worked on the project, and it should be clear what role you played in the work! Some people do add their role on the actual video itself too :) As for the resume section we don't have a video on it, but I'll add it to our suggestions for a future video, thanks so much!

I think a reel can be up to 3 mins. end of the day nothing is forcing the person to watch it. just make first 1 minute best stuff. then add the rest.

Ask yourself if it really needs to be, though. Part of what makes you a good motion designer is knowing how to pace information, and editing a showreel down to under 1 minute serves as evidence of that. Plus - like she said in the video - you’re only as good as your weakest shot.

Thanks for your comment! In our experience interviewing producers and studio owners, they often emphasise how they're going through 100 submissions/websites and don't have time to sit and watch a long reel, or dig through your website to find your email. They're usually searching through a tonne of designers and you need to be the one who stands out amongst the rest, showing only your best work! Maybe if you're in a specific niche, then a longer reel could be useful to show you're the right person for the job! :)
