We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

It's not that the Kemper is dead, it's that it's no longer the end all, be all for captured tones in the studio. Kempers are still great for live use if you're not trying to do a laptop set up (which can be complicated for some). But the ToneX is a great tool for recording.

Great stuff Glenn! I've been really digging the AXE I/O interface that IK has. It has built in re-amp output, tuner, etc. The best part was it came Amplitube. It really felt like buying this great software and they threw in this really neat Itallian interface that works fucking great. I know it's marketed for guitar players, but it's also a hidden gem with recording vocals too. Together those tools paired together have really helped a lot with learning and overall improvement over the last year. Amplitube's also a hell of a lot of fun to fiddle around and experiment. Damn I really wish I had access to something like this a decade ago. It's amazing how far technology has come. Would really love to possibly see some more Amplitube stuff down the road. Having the snapshots readily available at your feet in a small hardware unit is just too advantageous, and you can still use it for recording. Agreed! What always surprises me is how tech innovation like this is profitable. Most people I’ve known who play guitar never recorded or played shows. They just plug in and play. I’ve always wondered what the guitar industry is worth and if higher percentages of people are playing compared to decades past. I guess so since it’s so much easier to learn with RU-vid and it’s more affordable to sound good. The thing is, tech like this is really single purpose. It’s not like this can be used for anything else like say a military tech that can be applied to civilian use. Just a thought.

Your video is excellent! I too have jumped on the Tonex Band wagon! I can get advanced captures in 15 minutes from pressing the start training button. It takes four minutes for a default capture. The advanced captures do a great job of catching the sparkle of your amps. I have found the trick on default captures is to increase the gain a bit in the "compare tones" section of the process like you did in this video. The computer I built to handle this task cost me about $650.00 to build believe it or not. When you pair Reaper, Tonex and A-5 you have a very good guitar set up for sure.

Being able to model and capture the sound of vintage gear has been a proving ground for how good a technology is. That is what I have been waiting for as well. Many of the lesser expensive units had original models, most sounded like crap. What would be cool is being able to mess with the parameters used in the programming of the pieces. Maybe some visual tools that would.convert that to code that could be compiled into usable items. The cool thing about the modellers is that they can be lugged around for live use, yeah laptops can done as well. At the cost of complexity and more than a few failure points added. The 11 11 11 purportedly does have an original sound to it, or the ability to. Challenge is to get a capture of it and use it on a modeller. A little more complex than I want to attempt even with hand holding at this moment in time. Laziness more than capabilities.

Fascinating! Thank you!! Although I mainly use the Kemper for live stuff, and I never profile anything (!), I'm a simple guitar-and-amp guy and wouldn't know how to mic up an amp well, not being a recording engineer of any description, so my captures would likely be trash. But if you're studio-only this really looks the business. Still, with my handful of trust KPA profiles I don't think I'll be retiring the units soon (I have two). I have too much knowledge invested in them, and thousands of profiles to play with. Even the Quad Cortex is an issue because of the lack of a marketplace and a relatively small install base. If that ENGL cab is closed-back, check to make sure you securely mounted the speakers completely flush to the baffle of the cabinet. If there's any significant air leak, you'll lose low end and your speaker will sound more tubby. Speakers do change their sound a bit as they break in, but usually the difference isn't that dramatic. I doubt you warped the baskets. I suppose anything is possible, but a warped basket will misalign the voice coil in the magnet gap, and you'd probably get some very buzzy distortion from the voice coil rubbing on the gap instead of moving freely. Try playing a clean, low-frequency sine wave (100 Hz or so, somewhere in the range of your speaker). Start with the volume low and then turn it up. If it gets buzzy at moderate volumes, you have a warped cone/basket.

Yeah I think for my own software amp setup - AmpliTube 5 - it's let down by the fact that I just have PC speakers. Decent speakers at that but they are a 2.1 set, and I don't think that crossover between the satellites and subwoofer does any favours in trying to reproduce the sound of a guitar cab. I certainly don't get the resonance and feel I would be expecting from a real amp. I reckon a decent set of studio monitors would make a big difference but haven't decided on which ones to get yet - I'm living in an apartment with neighbours so don't need to get anything too big/powerful.

Hi Glenn, couple of questions if you don't mind: - In your opinion what makes a good guitar? Sound? (now that wood and pickups doesn't matter) Looks? (I favor this a lot), ergonomics? (also known as playability) - How about strings, have you seen the Jim Lill about this? (of course you have, but what do you think) - I've been hearing people raving about how a compressor sound (i.e color the sound) but I don't percieve this, yes , the envelope settings can differ, as so the threshold level, ratio relationships (?) , etc. but I can't hear something affecting the frequency response of said audio through said compressor, this also happens with mic pre amps, am I oblivious to this? is not that important? or is this more a forer kind of effect? ( a shoot out / blind test would help btw) thanks!

Sure i'll look to it, great idea for silent practice/recording, my only concern is if we want to play live with the capture, it will be great if they create an very affordable physical amp that does'nt have a shitload of knob/switch on it(like the other expensive on the market) and we can drop our capture and send to real speaker

That's pretty bloody impressive. Taking the Kemper method and making it software based is a great idea. I do love my Kemper and Amplitube is a great software, but I hate IK Multimedia, because how they license system works. Because you can't deactivate old licenses easily, I bought their Orchestral VSTi a few years back and now I can't use it, because I had a few hardware failures, I needed to reinstall that software a few times and like that no more licenses. That's why the hardware like a Kemper or a Quad Kortex is better in my opinion.

Apropos priceless and the subject of this episode: I just stumbled over a handful of remarkably simple but (at least to my ears) pretty great sounding free plugins and ended up experimenting with a plugin-chain consisting of Analog Obsession PEDALz --> AXP Softamp PSA --> Analog Obsession KABIN. Do you know these, and if so, what do you think of the plugins and combining them this way? IMHO this is a simple all-in-one solution providing almost any sound imaginable at an astonishing quality level without having to handle dozens of parameters and IR Cabs nor spending any money at all. Or is it only a naive noob's dream of cheating the system? 🙃 (I mean, I was on the verge of insanity with around 100 plugins from bx_rockrack to Waves GTR3 until I found and tried these three easy to handle freeware plugins)...

I don't know how good all the models are; I mostly am using the JC-120 and a Marshall and they sound good to me. But I've always been a solid state user and relied on modellers for my recording purposes (POD 2.0 > RP-355 > Mustang V V2 > MX5). Been a Tube amp snob for the better part of 30 years (Dr. Z. Morgan, BadCat, Mesa, ect....). Recently, last year, had to get a direct option for some small gigs and casino gigs that don't allow amps on stage. Tried a Helix, Headrush, PodGo, and finally settled on the Boss GX-100. About 4 months ago, I added the TONEX pedal.... I just didn't bond with the TONEX one bit. I even bought several profiles, but didn't like them. On a whim, I traded something for a Kemper Stage....HOLY COW! The Kemper may be 12 or 13 years old now, but the sounds I wanted were right there along with all the FX I could possibly want. I've purchased a few professional profiles and loved them all....Not sure what is different, but I guess that's why there are so many different options out today: Kemper, TONEX, Fractal, Helix, Boss, Headrush, ect.... I like Vox better than Fender, you like Fender better.... I like Kemper better, you like TONEX better.... All tools of the trade, just find what works best for you.

One of the things I love when I play is the 100 different kinds of muting. little bit here and there or a really heavy stepped on mute on the strings for a run here. These tones you were playing with seem to differentiate the different kinds of muting you were doing which is a sign of a good usable tone. When you start hearing the same sort of static for every subtlety then why bother doing anything but the same chug :P All in all loved the video !
