@TylerMowery, number one, thank you for this channel and advice on writing - they are great. Number two, I understand this is your channel and your place of power, but please while you are spreading what you tend to believe, think about other people's perspective too. What you said about atheists in this video is not true for everyone. God is not true or good for everyone. People are diverse - races, ethnicities, sexes, genders, ages, cultures, beliefs, values - that is why writing is so interesting, that is why exploring the world outside us is so mesmerizing and breathtaking. Once a person sticks to a dogma, though, and there is lots of rigidity and tunnel vision, but much less willingness to be open-minded to others' feelings and opinions, the flow stops.

@@TheNadir1983 Each atheist I have encountered over my 55 years has existed as Tyler describes. Only two exceptions come to my mind: Dr. Carl Sagan and Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, both of whom were staunch atheists but at the same time (seemingly at least - granted, I only know the personas they presented the public) perfectly happy folks. Every other atheist, though, I've met has been a pretty thoroughly miserable person and no one to be around. I speak solely and purely from personal experience. I consider myself a rather open-minded and accepting person (I also immediately follow that statement up with, those who think they are open-minded and accepting don't have to state that they are open-minded and accepting - oh, hypocrisy: ain't it grand!).

@@kerryparsons4815 People are only people. Everywhere. Always. We all have been born the same way, through the same physiological process and through a female body. We all going to die some day earlier or later. So no one, even those who claim they have got a sacred knowledge can be 100% trusted as really possessing it. Even worse, so called sacred books and teachings were once created in a specific historical moment of time, by and for a specific group of people, in a specific geographical region, and they are no way panacea to everyone. Hindu people cannot have same worldview as Jewish, Orthodox Christians or Mormons. Pretty every Christian believer that I've encountered was struggling with inner demons though publicly stating they became new people. Some preferred to hide their insecurities, vices and true agenda behind a shining facade of A True Believer. This is not to say that true believers do not exist, hear me well - people are people, we are different in our personal experiences and nearly same in biogenetical and psyche base. What Tyler shares here is his personal opinion and experience, not a universal truth of a kind, so is my comment above. All I wanted to say was the world is much more interesting place when we study it without blinkers of dogma and superiority to our neighbors. Otherwise, all books and screenplays would have been identical, not interesting at all :)

I agree with @Drudenfusz, and not just because I've been an Atheist since I was old enough to decide for myself. Time and again, I'm left surprised at how little amount of hubris is required for anyone to believe they have anything of import figured out, and it's just a shame that you feel ready to speak so condescendingly about those of us who just aren't ready to accept someone's word without evidence as "fact," and even singling this out as a deficiency with direct correlation to our writing hangups. Really? Are you sure about that? "Are ya sure about that?" :D Tyler, you might have acquired some degree of proficiency in the craft of screenwriting, but you're venturing into "guru" territory with this video (which I still hope is a belated April Fool's joke). Hopefully you can backtrack a little at some opportunity, but if not, best of luck to you, and more importantly, to your subscribers. Unless of course you're just pandering to a certain demographic by way of RU-vid metrics, in which case I guess the best I can do is simply roll my eyes and move on, but still sad because it negates much of the appreciation I had for your advice up to this point. Again, best of luck to all either way.

@@TylerMowery Likewise, I find it interesting that an acknowledgement of not actually having all the answers by not committing myself to Judeo-Christian, Muslim, Hinduism, Buddhism, or any other metaphysical belief system is taken as just the opposite in your video. Were I to go all in with Shintoism this weekend, would I be curing myself of the delusion of believing that I have all the answers a typical atheist suffers, or would the fact that I now believe in 8 million gods be hindrance in my plot structuring? Again, I appreciate your writing videos up to this point, but I find it even more disappointing that you're willing to double down on this notion that one's religion--or lack thereof--is something that can hinder one's creative output. I would never presume to know what is the "correct" faith to follow, and yet atheists seem to be easy pickings for criticism, now on the very subject of writing. My personal stance of "I just don't know and thus will not commit" is simply not good enough for some folks, but if this is me reacting "to any criticism of atheism," then okay, sure. The difference is, however, that most atheists such as myself just want to be left alone, not enlighten, change, or even attack others who have faith in their own systems. You went on the offensive with this one, so I'm just here to offer up some perspective from the other side. Hope you found this reaction just as interesting, Tyler! 😜

Overall, thank you for taking a bit to share your thoughts on this. Authors and writers sharing their own fears and confidences is always helpful to me. It brings me some additional perspective. I remember when I first started to doubt and overanalyze my writing. I never had any kind of conscious thought about how much that has changed my writing. I've been doing better as of late, partly with the help of recognizing bad ideas can still have something worth working with. I even have a writing journal I put my B.A.D. Ideas (Brainstorming and Developing). Taking the moment to just be creative before figuring out if it's a "good" idea. I have a few outlets for my creativity, and I usually use one to spark up my writing. Taking the moment to forget my constraints and believe in whatever world or character I see in my mind is a rejuvenating process. Making it a stressor can be undone though. Need to remind myself that sometimes, but it can really be done. I only recently really understood what the first draft is for. I regret not taking advantage of first drafts more when I was younger, but I also have to recognize I didn't know how they worked. I'm still a beginner outside of my school assignments. I look forward to finishing a personal first draft for the first time. Bringing God into the conversation for a moment was not expected but really nice. I sometimes think I've gotten so good at working on my thinking mind on my own, but it only goes so far. But I find myself being my most creative when I include The Creator in my process.

There should be no room in writing for totalitarian ideas on how beliefs and religion affect the 'truth' of people's art. I hope you realise that that's a very slippery slope. The world is a better place with everyone's stories equally in it.

@@TylerMowery Sharing beliefs through art is amazing, eye opening and I would encourage that -- but you cannot make sweeping statements about other people and who is / is not a good writer when that is entirely antithetical to the idea of art. It is also a slippery slope to dehumanisation of others. White people said that Jewish, and people of colour's art and music was degenerate, which was one way in which they made excuses for their subjugation. The greatest writers are from all backgrounds and beliefs because we are all the same at the end of the day.

Thanks. A few months back I got frustrated with my procrastination. I started therapy, began working on the Artist's Way, removed as much unhealthy tech things from my life etc. The goal I set for myself was just "do one healthy thing for my mind each day". No matter the hour, the scale, what it is. Is it creating something? Reading a book? As long as I feel it's trully good for me, my day is successful. What you're saying about clocks is true. It's easy to hold yourself accountable for writing/making art each day for a certain amount of time. But it shouldn't really work this way. I noticed that some days you drain your creative energy in 5 minutes, and sometimes in 8 hours. It's really bad to set yourself a certain block of time, because then you're just overthinking it. It's, in my opinion, the most important thought in this video. And not enough people are talking about it.

@nathanlongwell
@nathanlongwell 3 месяца назад
It’s a simplified argument, however, since you follow this channel, I imagine you are relatively well thought, and articulate individual, it’s important to understand our own systems of belief… every atheistic idea at its end is based in nihilism, and at its end argues the meaninglessness of reality, and a baseless and purposeless life. If you don’t understand that, dig just a bit, and it will become very clear. 👍🏼
@Drudenfusz
@Drudenfusz 3 месяца назад
@@nathanlongwell Nope, my atheism is not based in nihilism. Quite the opposite actually. Just because atheism is not based on divinely given purpose does not make everything meaningless. You know people can create and give meaning to their lives? So again, try first to understand what atheism actually is before you judge it based on your ignorance. Have your faith, believe whatever you like, but do not try to gaslight people who have a different belief system that can come to meaning in life without the need for deities.

@@nathanlongwell Well, I would suggest you try digging into reality to find out that your belief might be the right thing for you, but it is definitely not how the world or other people and other beliefs work. @nathanlongwell
@nathanlongwell 3 месяца назад
@@Drudenfusz there is subjectivity to meaning only to a certain point. Pure subjectivity is defined as pure chaos, and there is zero meaning, and usually pure destruction in pure chaos.
