Agree with Treach that disciplining kids changed when laws were added but not forgetting laws that abolished praying in school.

They took skilled trades out of schools too! With skilled trades being taught young brothers were able to make great money as carpenters, welders, electricians etc

Chicago did have a “city-wide peace treaty” back in 93 that led to a major one between the Black Disciples and the Gangster Disciples. That one lasted for years. The streets were real player throughout the rest of the 90s. Wasn’t a cease fire, but brothers could coexist in the schools and in the streets to a degree.

If we had the community centers of the 70’s where you could learn drama, organized sports, gyms, pools, music lessons, computer skills, tutoring, extracurricular science and math kids would have more to do than watch the ignorance on BET and MTV, not music programs but the reality TV. I being 54 and growing up in NY/NJ in the 70s and 80s luckily had Pops HOME and Uncles and Grandfathers both sides close by saw the societal decline in men of color and immigrants. The real question is why are kids in streets trying to get money… address the problem with the parents and you can correct the problem with the kids. Kids should be able to be kids and not have the responsibility of bringing money home. Money and material things have been made a bigger priority than anything else and it’s fueled by entertainers who constantly brag and tell you you ain’t “ish” if you ain’t got money or this car, clothes or outfit. It’s all a part of the same destructive cycle.

arrest come with a bail, driving and parking tickets come with a bail, driving school comes with a price, impounded cars come with a price, lawyers come with a price, not to mention inmates do all the heavy lifting in prison, and outside businesses profit from labor contracts with the jails and prisons where they pay pennies on the dollar for labor. It's a win win win situation.

Let's not wax poetic like those generations born between 1970-1990 had all this structure in the households and in the community. That's what gets people into trouble and keeps them living in unrealistic revisionist history bubbles. Many Black communities were created by force, rather than natural accumulation. In many cases, the older people that framed themselves as "OGs" back then were the ones violating those young kids. It still happens today. There is SOMETHING ELSE that is influencing the prolonging and amplification of dysfunction within Black political, economic and social spaces. In Juice, Samuel L's character stated "I knew a lot of killers when they were kids"; there are countless interviews of brothers/sisters in prison that stated they were heavily involved in church activities as children. SOMETHING ELSE exists that is causing all of the chaos. Discipline in most Black households were framed within conformance to the social norms created by 'other people' rather than building blocks for prosperity for Black people. Many children often found themselves on the receiving end of beatings that were meant for those 'other people', because the parent was too scared to handle their business. The cycle of abuse is sparked right there. Unpopular opinion: There is a second level caste system that exists in Black American society that is headed by Black people. It comes in many familiar forms that many people are used to and have found comfort with. Even the 'solutions' to common problems are proposed through that element, which is why nothing is properly addressed. Until this reality is confronted and dealt with, none of the dysfunction will stop.

As I watch this video I see a room full of strong intellectual, educated Black men the solution is right there. In general there are so many upstanding Black men & women across the country is that not a huge solution for the problem? We’re not lacking Strong Black men however things seem to not be getting better, so at this point is the system totally to blame? We are very much aware of the systems agenda for quite some time now. So many layers to this topic. We are definitely more enlightened now in days then our elders to a degree. Aren’t we supposed to lead better with each generation? Apparently we haven’t forgot the jewels given to us, so is it safe to say it’s solely our responsibility of self accountability to make right of our communities?
