I'm going to try to add a couple things that some folks aren't aware of. In terms of rust prevention and wood becoming warped, there's a special wax called Micro-crystalline Wax that does and amazing job of protecting metal, wood, leather etc. surfaces from water and moisture in the air. It really gets in the "pores" and stays there for a long time. It's also not slippery. It's used at the Smithsonian museum to preserve all types of artifacts long term. It's not meant for moving parts but the exterior of barrels, wood stocks, etc, does an amazing job. Secondly, the problem of AR's needing to be re-lubed can be somewhat remedied by creating a DIY gun lube using a mixture of Mobil 1 Synthetic and a multi-purpose, high temp, synthetic grease. The grease thickens the mixture and really helps the mixture stay put on moving parts such as the BCG. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Good information there. When I was on sailboats, some people would impregnate wood with a two-part epoxy resin. It makes wood impermeable to water, but makes it very dark as well. I think people are going to have to get their hands on whatever lube they can find at a point. Used motor oil, tranny fluid, animal fat, you name it. I just want people to think about it because a lot of people have plans to bug way out.

Accuracy is in the hands of the shooter.if you shoot a certain gun all the time you tend to get good with that weapon. I can't get a good group with my ak but I hand it to my friend 2 inch group at 100 yards so just saying alot has to do with the shooter.

well the Mini 14 actually is vastly better than it used to be... more like a medium cost ar15 now. We found if we strip off all the groups sks collapsible bayonets it helped with their accuracy... we also have the same cal and types of travel rifles ... northern Ontario is short range (and less firearm acceptable) we all have 357 leaver action carbines (and revolvers). We have them fairly tricked out, scopes, lights etc... quick-load methods

Just saw some reviews of the new Ruger bolt action Ranch Rifle, Gen II, 16" flutter barrel, 10 rd mags, in $700 range.Apparently it shots very accuratly. Half the cost of a Ruger Scout which is about $1500. The Ruger Ranch might be a good one! My state, Washington, has banned the sale of any type of assault rifle as they describe it, and accesories, so a properly outfitted Ruger Ranch rifle might be a good alternative!

I just got a ruger American ranch gen1 in 6.5 Grendel since I have several ar15”s in 6.5 Grendel plenty of mags pretty healthy ammo stash plus enough reloading supplies to load a few thousand more. But the rifle is awesome shoots 3/4” to 1.5” depending on what ammo. Granted I’ve only had it for a couple weeks and only 50-60rds through it but so far it’s looking promising. I have plenty 5.56/223 ar15’s mags and ammo and that’s more of my go to. But the 6.5 Grendel has its place to. Definitely better for hunting and long range not to mention the light weight and handiness of the ruger American ranch. With a loaded 15rd mag and a 4-14x primary arms acss scope it’s just over 7lbs but honestly it feels lighter.

Lubricant isn’t an issue. Motors are everywhere and they all have oil in them. When it comes to an AR keep an extra bolt carrier group on you and the rifle will run longer than you’ll be able to feed it.

Even the cheapest AR-15 has a 4000+ round barrel life. Even the best big game caliber hunting rifles have a 1,000-2,500 round barrel life much after that and you’re lobbing those $3/per shot elk rounds out of a smoothbore.

@nemoexnuqual3643
@nemoexnuqual3643 5 месяцев назад
@@weezem you understand I’m not being literal. It isn’t a literal smoothbore. My point is that nobody in their right mind is taking a .338 Win mag for close quarter combat. Your heavy hitters are typically better for long range. Long range means you need greater accuracy. Therefore the damage to my four round capacity bolt action 7mm REM mag’s accuracy will do much more toward making the rifle useless to me and the more powerful the rifle (generally speaking) the shorter the barrel life and the greater effect on accuracy it will ultimately have given the same number of rounds. My mag rifles are long range rack drivers, if they weren’t then I’d have to move closer. If I have to move closer then I might as well go with a .308 or 5.56 in a semiautomatic. I can stockpile more ammo, more cheaply in 5.56 or .308 and the barrel life is longer as well as being comparable in accuracy at the range of a magnum with a shot out barrel. Maybe you are a world class shooter, I don’t know you. Maybe you can pop the cherry off a cigarette from 1000 yards. Most people on RU-vid looking for basic knowledge realistically are pleased with being on paper at 100 -300 yards no matter what they are shooting. Do you have any idea how many rounds the cheapest phosphate coated mil spec barrel has to have put through it to not be able to hit a man size target or even a lung shot on a deer reliably? I don’t, a decade in the army and I never once came across a 5.56 rifle (except for one that had a bent barrel) that couldn’t hit a silhouette at 300meters. These things had tens of thousands of rounds through them! So maybe you are “giga-Chad” multimillionaire tungsten carbide space age tech guy but 99% of people are not. They will be like my father in law who dumped $2k on a Wetherby 300 in the 80’s, then never got it zeroed because he was afraid of it shot out half the barrel life over the years. Then couldn’t afford to buy more ammo when it got to $90/box so he had this useless POS hanging on his wall with 10 rounds left in a box until he sold it for $1000. We took his $1k and got him a decent AR-15, optic, and 500 rounds. Zeroed it in an afternoon and now he is at last moderately useful. www.gunsandammo.com/editorial/extending-a-barrels-life/326755 www.fieldandstream.com/barrel-burnout-is-it-time-for-new-tube/?amp www.fieldandstream.com/story/blogs/gun-nut/is-your-rifle-barrel-shot-out/?amp

Nothing wrong with a ruger mini 14 or mini 30. Both mini's can be made to be accurate. Up grade the peep sight to a Tech sight . Accuracy Systems sells all kinds of upgrades for a mini 14 or 30. Like adjustable gas block and struts. You can either shim or glass bed the action to prevent movement. As a suggestion a muzzle brake will stop vertical stringing.When I can hit bowling pins @ 100 to 200 yards with a mini 30 with peep sights , thats accurate enough for me.

I wouldnt choose it as my first choice in fire arms for SHTF, but some of the Lever Actions are an option worthy of consideration. The Henery Lone Ranger or another model recently introduced at the shot show this year are magazine fed and come in a few different calibers. For hunting a single shot over a bolt gun, such as the CVA models, is also a viable option in wide number of chambering to suit almost any need short of extreme long range shooting. For a General Purpose do it all gun, unless you have bear or elk and moose in your area, I think the AR-15 in one flavor or another is better than the AK.

@Nick-wn1xw
@Nick-wn1xw 7 месяцев назад
Because AR's need spare parts and a good bolt action won't.
@nemoexnuqual3643
@nemoexnuqual3643 7 месяцев назад
@@Nick-wn1xwgotta disagree in a way and agree in another. By round count I very much disagree. Part of that is that unless you go with a 5.56 or less bolt action your barrel will wear out at a much lower round count. .300 WinMag is shooting though a smoothbore after about 1,500 rounds. Even the cheapest barrel for 5.56 doesn’t start to see barrel degradation until more than 4,000 rounds with high end AR barrels lasting more than 30,000 rounds! Of course with a bolt action you can’t keep up with how many rounds are sent down range so naturally it will take you much longer for your elk getter to reach 1,500 rounds than to fire that 4,000 to 30,000 rounds from an AR. So your bolt action, at the range, will last longer by the calendar count. Why I specify “at the range” is that depending on the scenario your standard 3-5 round mag with a rate of fire that is glacial the scenario you find yourself in will greatly affect how many shots you can fire before being killed. A bolt action is fine for those highly morally questionable shots where you are “defending yourself” from 500 yards hoping that any national state level enemies don’t have a “boomerang” system that will pinpoint you location on the map and enable precise artillery fire or air support with standard thermal optics to rain on you. Let’s instead assume that you are in a position where you must actually defend yourself against the most common threat. 3-5 armed men (statistically pistols or knives). Most self defense shootings are at 7 meters or less but you have problems at that range already regardless of platform. Let’s push that out to the normal listed effective range of most pistols and shotguns using buckshot 50 meters. The average (reasonably healthy and of typical criminal age) person can run 50 meters in 7-7.5 seconds. Lets assume your bolt gun to be about 1 meter long giving you 49 meters of play. At two seconds per shot you could at best get 3 shots downrange and the last shot would be fired about the same time as the first guy reaches your muzzle. Better not miss while they are sprinting and possibly shooting back. You also better not have a hot load that swells in the breech and makes your bolt stick as is common with Mosins. Also most people, like myself put nice optics on bolt guns if possible. Have you ever tried to hit a moving target with a 9 power scope at 10-20 yards😂 if not I’ll tell you it is hard! That deer or jackrabbit looks like it’s going warp speed! If you are shooting iron sights then the biggest advantage of a bolt action is gone. This also means that even if you are the best shot in the world a bolt action would result in you fighting with your gun as a club is only 4 motivated attackers armed with even just sharpened screwdrivers attack. We saw the difference in lethality during WW2 when Americans with semiautomatics crushed Germans and Japanese with bolt actions spurring the Germans to rapidly develop and deploy their own semi and fully automatic rifles too late in the game. I love my bolt action rifles, but they are not combat or self defense weapons in modern times. I love swords, axes, medieval armor, and bows too but that doesn’t mean I’m banking on surviving dressed as the Bruce.
@efficientinthefield
@efficientinthefield 7 месяцев назад
I don't think the need for spare parts will be an issue. Everyone thinks they're going to be Rabmboing it up, but the reality is that if you can shoot well and avoid other armed groups, you'll probably go through less than 1000 rounds in the two years.

In a group, I think I'd have to go with a single shot along with caliber adapters that I could shot 12 guage,.410 ,357, .22 and maybe 9mm. They are cheap, light and, if you had to, you could remake with a lathe. If not in a group. .22 revolver(or ruger 10/22 would be better but it would be my primary then) and an ar15(just because there are so many of them out there parts would be readily accessible, as well as ammunition is everywhere. If I have to reach out and touch something at 400 yards, I'm probably to far anyway. I would relay heavily on my ability to be stealthy, to either get closer(animal) or let it pass by(bipedal). And since I have a family, someone would have my old .410 single shot. It fed my family for 3 generations now, no reason it couldn't keep doing its job.
@nemoexnuqual3643
@nemoexnuqual3643 7 месяцев назад
As a boy my friend and I would protect his chickens with our cheap shotguns. He had a New England arms single shot shotgun, I had this Brazilian make side by side. At night we didn’t have night vision we had a spotlight or moonlight. When coyotes would come we would blast them at about 10-20 yards. It being dark we frequently missed and the yote was GONE! Even when bird hunting during the day frequently a person misses the first shot but hits with the second. We also noticed that my double barrel was really fast on a second shot but beyond that actually way more than twice as fast for getting to shot #4, 6, and so on each time getting further and further ahead. Then he got a pump action and he was able to miss twice and get a duck or potentially get three ducks to my best of two. Why do I bring this up? Imagine if you will a statically common group of 3-5 attackers, statistically between 16 and 24 years old, statistically male, statistically drug users, statistically armed with pistols and knives(or other edged/pointy weapons) or the occasional shotgun. Now let’s take our most probable scenario and have them attacking from even the listed max effective range of the most common handguns 50 meters. The average reasonably unhealthy person can run 50 meters in 7-7.5 seconds. How many shots can you get off before someone armed with a steak knife kills you? 1 with a single shot? 2-3 with a bolt action? 20-30 with a semiautomatic? Even in a group a single shot as a primary weapon essentially makes you not especially useful to that group. I would honestly rather take a guy with a bow and a machete because he has about the same rate of fire but is at least quiet adding a specific capability to the group. Single shot weapons are fine for rabbits. In fact a breakdown .22 survival rifle you can strap to a pack is great for getting a jackrabbit lunch but the advantage is that you can carry a useful gun that destroys rabbit meat but swap to a popgun that is more appropriate. In combat single shots are “better than nothing” but why go for that if you can really have something. Also as far as “being sneaky” try reloading a single shot from the prone while in the woods. Any chance of stealth is gone as you appear to recreate a Hollywood drama sex scene with the moss under you and your rifle playing the part of the bed frame. Loading a single shot has all the stealth of a bus load of special Ed kids dancing to “Ride of the valkyrie” on a Macys day parade float.

Just gotta get a decent amount of stripper clips. You could easily put 6-8 in each pouch where two magazines would fit with Velcro/clipped closed pouches. I’m in commiefornia with a pre banned C39 sporter saiga ak47 (paid $900 in 2013) with the milled receiver with 4 magazines. I use a condor chest rig (I’m poor so I don’t have that fancy stuff lol) I then shove 3 stripper clips below each mag. Allows me to carry 130 rounds on me as is. It’s not ideal but someone carrying three 30 rd magazines, one 30 rd on their belt system, and one in the gun would only put them slightly above my current capacity.. BUT I could easily add 2 more stripper clips to each mag pouch if I really wanted to and it would hold the 10 rd magazine better in the pouches making it 60rds in each mag pouch without adding any into either one of the two canteen pouches. It’s not ideal but if I go through 30-40 rounds that fast and don’t have time to quickly shove a stripper clip into a spent mag with the quick attachments, I’m in some deep shat and probably not doing so hot with my shot placement.

I believe that if all you had for guns was an AK and a Mosin. And ammo for both. Your good to go. But i say that’s the minimum. 2 guns. A reliable bolt gun in a common caliber and a good fighting weapon that can be used for hunting if it’s all you have. So you’re fighting weapon plus the ammo for it, should always come first if you can’t afford to buy both guns at the same time. The order you do these in matter greatly.

Always followed the rule of using what's available and will remain available post SHTF. 5.56/.223, 7.62x39, 7.62x51, 9mm, .45ACP, .22LR, 12GA etc....People often overlook the availability factor when buying nowadays...5.7 is a nice caliber, but I only know one guy that even owns one....however just about every gun owner I know has a 9mm in their arsenal somewhere. Aside from ammo, another thing to consider is parts/cleaning supplies. Having enough parts to rebuild or replace the wearing components on just about all your guns 2-3 times will be invaluable. Barrels/BCG's wear out of tolerance after a few thousand rounds, which in my opinion is not realistic up front in SHTF, but maybe long term it could be. Unless you're out firefighting every day and somehow not dead, you would be hard pressed to burn through 8-12k rounds and be wearing out barrels/bcg's.
@efficientinthefield
@efficientinthefield 7 месяцев назад
The most combat experienced operators in the world haven't put enough rounds on tangos to burn out a chrome-moly barrel. If any of us find ourselves in that situation in SHTF, we've made some bad decisions and likely will be smoked. Totally agree with the ammo selection IF you aren't prepping and know you'll have to scrounge. Even then, it never hurts to have firearms chambered in commonly available cartridges. 💯
@Bone_Frog2666
@Bone_Frog2666 7 месяцев назад
100% Agree. Putting that many rounds out in the field means you're doing something VERY wrong and have made too many enemies along the way. I think bartering of food/water/ammo/guilty pleasures i.e. Alcohol/Tobacco products will become a norm after the first few months. @@efficientinthefield

I like bolt actions but in todays world where everybody has semi auto handguns and rifles , the bolt action as your primary weapon I think you would be severely outgunned in some circumstances , my choices have changed over the years I had a revolver as my sidearm, but only 6 rounds and a slow reload even with speed loaders just doesn't cut it anymore

Have you had any experience with the AK’s chambered in .556? I didn’t know if that would be the best of both worlds. I had an AK but switched to an AR mainly because of ammo availability and 762 ain’t as easy or cheap to come by as it used to be. I wanna switch to an AK in .556 to have the reliability of an AK but still have the easy to find 556 ammo. Sorry if I sound like a newb. Any input would be awesome! Keep up the good videos man

I honestly don't have any experience with 5.56 AKs. My understanding of it makes it seem like a double edged sword in a way. The mags won't be easy to come by at all. You might be better off buying a quality gas piston upper for your AR. Like LWRC. 👍

I'm going to do a TikTok on it. I'll talk shit like normal to keep myself entertained 🥳, but it's a good cartridge. There's plenty of things that will outperform it for similar or less $ within 500-600 yards, but it's great beyond that. Even within that range, it can kill a lot of stuff if you can do your part.

The average person runs about a 7-7.5 second 50 meter. The average burglary when the home is expected to by occupied has 3-5 armed attackers. The most common weapons used by criminals in homicides BY FAR are handguns and edged weapons (knives, hatchets, sharpened screwdrivers) followed by blunt weapons. Shotguns are rarely used in homicides, rifles are extremely rare in homicides accounting for less than 2%. Most criminals are drug users between the ages of 16 and 24. Therefore our most statistically likely attack vector will be 3-5 young male drug users armed with handguns, knives, and the occasional baseball bat that will be attacking within 50 meters and can easily reach you in under 8 seconds. Try this: set up 3-5 targets at random intervals out to 50 meters and time yourself putting one shot per target. Of course these targets will be stationary and not shooting back so any weapon that takes you over 7 seconds to hit 3-5 separate targets in unrealistically good conditions is obviously not well suited for anything considered a self defense situation.

I gotta disagree on the lube comments for the ar platform. I legitimately lube with motor oil and have been for years. I was on a meu back in 07 and the salt water would rust our weapons something serious we found that motor oil protected better then issued clp. I say that to say cleaning once every 250 rounds or so in a shtf situation you would have to do a TON of shooting (and dodging incoming bullets) to go through even a pint of oil. Grab a gallon of 0 weight and you will be fine

guns are machines all machines require a lubrication and manitainence schedule. when it comes to lubing a rifke or habdgun. ask the jurassic question just because it CAN run dry and is working doesnt mean you should. Dont destroy tour gear do proper PMCS and take care of the gear thats supposed to take. are of you.

Of course. I never suggested you run them dry. I just said I can run mine dry for hundreds of rounds without malfunction. Bear grease, motor oil, etc., will work like a charm for me in SHTF. 🥳
