Diffuser + additives + fancy bottle + celebrities + lot$ of marketing = sh*t you shouldn't buy or drink. Honor and support the farmers and distilleries that make tequila correctly.
I’m a bourbon guy who has just started going down the tequila rabbit hole. I stumbled on your channel and have learned a lot and bought some various bottles on your recommendation
I work for a spirits distributor and I want to just thank you for bringing this to light! So many people are getting into the tequila category which is great but most have no clue what the difference between a blanco or reposado is. Obviously everyone needs to start somewhere but your channel is great for anyone and everyone looking to learn more about tequila. Props my friend!
Thank you my friend! Yes that's all I am trying to do. I'm by no means an expert but sharing whatever knowledge I can to help people get into it the right way. Happy you are enjoying it 😁🙏
Good way to tell if you drank a bad tequila is waking up with a headache. I don't know if it's the additives or something else but good tequila doesn't give me headaches.
I stopped drinking tequila after HS because we all drank Jose Cuervo 💀 sick and headaches fosho. Then worked at a bar and learned that good tequila doesn't make you hung over. My buddy's mom passed and we drank a bottle of Chamucos. Was fine the next day. 👌
Let me just say this… any Tequila brand that is market or sponsor by Actor/Singers = don’t buy. Basically them Actor/Singer know just as much as ordinary person about Tequila. One good one… ask Paisa. Can never go wrong with Cava de Don Agustin Tequila.- sad they don’t sale it in the US.
The hardest thing i have found is convincing people that the brands they think are good are complete trash. I am slowing becoming that guy that just "hates" the popular brands. But little by little i will make sure my friends only like the good stuff. 😁
Now they're convincing bourbon and gin producers to incorporate agave into their product line, soon agave will be right beside avocado on the Subway and Starbucks sandwich spread options
So it's a bit different but it is present. Because Tequila is made with only the blue Weber agave it's more scrutinized and there's just so much more demand for one specific plant. Mezcal can be made from many many agave species (tho 90% of them are the Espadín variety) but I'm sure it's present in Mezcal production as well.
Honestly I'd have less of an issue with additives if these companies were required to be honest. If you want to add a sweetener, that's fine... As long as you tell me that you sweetened it. That way, if someone wants entirely traditional tequila, they can easily find it.
I once read or heard that by Mexican law tequila blanco cannot have additives in it if claiming to be 100% agave and that only reposados and anjeos allow for additives. Can someone please confirm this one way or another?
What tequila would you recommend for about the £50 mark. I bought el Tayo tequila which was nice but it felt a bit muted. I expect there are more flavoursome tequilas out there. Cheers Andrew
Thank you so much my friend! I've been really trying to up the quality and create videos people really want to see. So hopefully I've been able to do that over the last few weeks. As well as putting out more content consistently
Bourbon suffers from the same things lol. Many of them have suffered from charcoal filtering then have glycerin caramel colour and oak extract added. You have to specifically search for bourbons that show that nothing of the above has been done. Scotch is the same, rum is the same. Ever spirit has the same problem with this industrialization.... People age spirits in barrels reused for 10000 times just for the law of exceeding certain months or years to label it and then add colour and wood taste to cover it up... Consumers giving the nod are the problem really but it's a hard topic to start over RU-vid comments. Thanks for the video Lui!!! I advocate for the same things
Even though I'm not a fan of Don Julio or Casa Amigos. It is sad that someone who definitely knows nothing about tequila has such wrong opinions and is so far from reality, damaging the reputation of a drink with so much tradition and hard work.
In other words, if a person doesn't like or prefer to drink any STRAIGHT spirit product (like me), they should definitely not add an ice cube, ginger ale , store bought lime juice or 7 up as all of these "mixers etc." will contain some type of "additives / chemicals" . I believe you could make informational content without the overly dramatic hyperbole or overly demonizing what any of your viewers might prefer to drink.
I just learned that Blanco tequila can legally have additives! I had previously heard that Blanco could not, but apparently this only applies to "abocantes", which are specific additives that seem to be geared toward trying to masquerade as an aged product. Ugh. Additive Free Alliance folks!
So, the only way to know is buy some and taste test it. Until my ABC store starts carrying the "el" tequilas you recommend, I'll buy the naturally derived additives without knowing it.
Can you talk about oxygenation in tequila? How is this done? What is the point? Does it make smoother tequila? Is the process frowned upon, seems no one advertises it.
I haven't been able to get my hands on any Tears of Llorona yet. I've heard amazing things about it but unfortunately haven't tasted it myself. And yes! Fortaleza for the win!
I bought a bottle of Don Julio at the airport in Mexico on the way home when I got home and opened up the bottle it tasted like kerosene I let some people try it and they said don't drink it down the drain it went
Yes! Tequilamatchmaker.com they have a whole list of additive free tequilas and they have a whole certification process they go through to determine additive free tequilas
By holding a bottle of Don Julio 1942 at the beginning whilst talking about brands with additives are you implying 1942 has some or all of the additives you mention later?
For me the biggest problem with the additive laden Tequilas is that most of the time the agave takes a back seat, and some can be confused as being a lower quality rum. If I want that Vanilla sweetness I'd just get a high quality rum, or seek a bourbon. If I am drinking Tequila, I want it to actually taste like agave. Just knowing that the quality of the tequila is most likely inferior (agave plant too young, diffuser, etc) and just being masked tp sell to the masses I can't roll with that knowing I can get better quality, better tasting for less $$$.
That is an incredibly thorough and well thought out comment. Thank you for sharing. I agree with you for sure. Tequila should taste like agave. Shouldn't be a controversial statement but here we are.
I'm always asking people what's in the Tequila and they just shrug their shoulders . When I drink I want clean liquor ( Tequila my favorite) without additives and I find that hard to get a straight answer , so glad I stumbled across your channel. I also have no desire to support celebs alcohol because it's just another way to make money and put their name out there , no thank you. I want to support the farmers
I like tequila and am looking for a good sipper. I won't buy anything celebrity branded period. And like bourbon I believe the fact so many craft distilleries are entering the market it will hurt the cooperage industry. Barrels are going to be stressed to the breaking point if this continues. Enjoy!!
just to be clear, 100% agave means that 100% of the raw ingredient for making alcohol is agave, not that 100% of the ingredients in the liquid is agave. Those are two different equations.
Tequila matchmaker, don't have any info on Agavero so if anyone haves info on that can someone let me know, that tequila is smooth and have a sweet taste. So I need info on that.
Since 1997 it can be up to 1% each of 4 different categories of additive, adding up to 4% according to Tequila Academy , referencing Section 4.1 of the 1997 DOF. It's enough to give you a hangover that you wouldn't have had without the additives.
I was under the impression, maybe incorrectly, that Blancos had to be additive free by Mexican law, and Reposados and Anejos fell under the 1% rule. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Wouldn’t oak extract be considered a terpenoid in which case would not be a bad/harmful additive just for flavor adjustment to help the taste of cheaper tequila?
In a way yes because you're paying a much higher price for an inferior product all because of their marketing and it's full of additives there are many tequila brands way better than cas amigos. You should check out the video I did on alternatives to casa amigos it's on my page as well
Good job! As I was watching I kept thinking of things I hoped you'd talk about, forming my response, but you hit it all on the head! It's a strange situation: tequila is really popular, but so much of that is because of the shitty celebrity brands. I've won over many people by explaining the additives and introducing good brands, but so many more just want the sweet crap because it's easy to drink and tastes good in Red Bull. Sad!
Yes! That paradox of Celebrity tequila is a huge one. On the one hand it's helped to explode tequilas popularity but at the other end of that the exploding popularity of tequila has also exacerbated the use of Additives and promoted other unsafe practices in the tequila industry. And to your other point, yes. It's so sad that a lot of people just don't care and just want their overly sweet fake vanilla alcohol. But you know what? To each their own. Leaves the good stuff to us. 😂 Anyway happy you enjoyed this video!
This is quite melodramatic. Especially how often use the terms chemicals and additives. The flavor isn’t going to be as good but none of the ingredients you mentioned are even close to harmful in the concentrations used in tequila production but you def want the audience to believe they are.
Pretty unconvinced as to why this is so bad. If it tastes worse then don't buy it but if tastes fine then additives offer a way to make a similar product at a lower price. However, I do appreciate videos about which brands don't have additives and which brands are must trys!
@Royale With Cheese.. you are missing a key point. The quality and what you are paying for it. Many of these Additive laden Tequilas are of poor quality and are being sweetened up with chemicals to make them taste better. They a cheaply made compared to traditional quality Tequila and the juice should cost $10, but they add the additives and put it in a fancy bottle and make you pay $60 -$200 for it. Whereas if you bought a legitimately made tradition Tequila you maybe paying $29 - $100 and the flavors are all nature and of much higher quality. Tequila should taste like Agave and it should be pleasant enough to enjoy neat. If you want the AGAVE to be masked with additives, then you really don't want to drink Tequila. Buy a RUM, which has superior sweet flavors to those additive Tequilas and you'd save a lot of $$$ in the process.
It can yeah. Organic and kosher relate to other things but not additives. Additives can be added and not disclosed and it can still technically be organic and kosher.
I heard the way you can find out if a spirit has additives is to simply cook it in a pan. The liquid will evaporate and all that will be left is a gunky tar which is the amount of additives
Give Siete Leguas a try. 100% add. free. I'm rather partial to the Anejo, but I'm a Bourbon convert, so the smoky/oaky quality is right in my wheelhouse. Most of the uninitiated that I've introduced to the brand seem to favor the Blanco instead.
Until recently, Canadian whisky was the best selling spirit in the US, bourbon hasn’t been reigning that long. On another note, I’m fast falling into the agave spirit rabbit hole and your channel has been a big help in helping me make informed choices. Originally I’m a scotch geek and I’ve always stayed away from coloured and chill filtered products. Similarly, I’ll avoid tequilas with additives in part with your help. Thanks!
Woooo! Happy to hear that my friend 😁😁🙏 happy to help in anyway. And yeah your right, i heard that Canadian whiskey reigned supreme because of prohibition. The American bourbon market only really got back to pre prohibition levels in the 80s whereas Canadian whiskey never had that problem. I'm not sure how much that's the case but certainly a fascinating perspective
@Mathieu Dube... That's awesome! I'm a fellow Tequila and Whisky enthusiast who also stays away from the unnatural stuff as well. Welcome to the rabbit hole.
Make a video proving your accusations about tequila. Show us your credentials that make you a expert. Make a video with someone who works at distillery stating what you are saying is true. All hear say with no proof. Just show me some proof so I can start making videos about bad tequila
sounds like YOU are the one that needs to go and get more educated about this industry. At the end he gave a program that varifies these concerns. Go to it. Look at it. Research the different type of methods to create tequila and how the higher rated ones compare to the lower rated ones. Also why are you offended? are you LeBron? you can be open minded and compare say Casamigos to Tequila Ocho and YOU decide what you like to drink.
Have i at any moment stated that I'm an expert? I also did state my sources at the end. Search up Tequila Match Maker Additive Free List and you'll see where I got this information from. Anyway hope your day gets better.
