Kevin, thank you very much for what you are doing/sharing. I'm 76 and since my recent retirement, I made it my goal to learn as much about the guitar and playing guitar as I am able. You are wise beyond your years, and really have a great and understandable way of explaining things. I also appreciate your honesty/understanding, and when you caution that some things will take years if not a lifetime to master. I've been practicing the pentatonic scale and really did not understand its significance until just now. When I was a teenager I bought a cheap (almost unplayable) folk guitar and learned to bang out cowboy chords, but never progressed past that. In retirement I decided to take the time and learn more about the instrument. By chance I found your channel, and you have opened doors for me. Thank you so much!

Thanks for sharing before learning any minor pentatonic scales, you need to know the 3 pillars of guitar playing starting with melody that leads to harmony and rhythm.

I sincerely think this channel is underrated. I'm a big fan of free content, since I also love free and open source software. This channel is the first guitar channel to my knowledge that provides a roadmap in such a way that it can easily be picked up instead of a paywall. Thank you, Kevin for not only making music more accessible, but also for your content because I think it's quite entertaining also!

I've been doing a 30 day intro course and shamelessly watching other videos as well. I'm on day 20-something, have been watching guitar videos every day, and this is the first time I am hearing that the notes repeat after/on the 12th fret. Looking at the notes, I can see it, but nobody actually stated that one simple fact, it was just left as something for me to discover

Love your videos man - too many online tutors go from 0 to 1 to 2 to 78 in one video. "So, that's called a NOTE, and you can play more than one note to make a CHORD. See? Strum these together and you've made your first chord! Now, once you know your first chord, you're ready to take that and use it in an ionised conducive quadrant to suspend your interior clavicular modem. * proceeds to shred *. Guitar for beginners!"

thanks papa kevin I have a question: It’s been 4 months of electric guitar. I changed my pick, picking grip, and started palm muting 2 months ago. I started using a jazz 3 and closing my hand into a “fist” as my picking grip. After palm muting and playing a lot of bottom 3 string songs I decided that I like how the hand lays on the strings during palm muting so I just lowered my hand and put it on the bridge, effectively having the same position as when palm muting with my pick now above my lower humbacker. Now, 1 month later, I started doing alternate picking drills and such and I noticed that I always keep hitting my humbuckers when I pick, especially on the higher strings. I tried different picking grips, different arm positions, loosening my hand, playing slow, everything, and I can’t fix it. Moreover, when I try to pick the strings as gently as I can, for some reason there’s barely any sound coming out, so I have to attack them more aggressively but then I lose control. The question I have is: Do I keep my wrist in the same position at all times or do I move it down when I go down the strings? Can you provide a detailed and comprehensive video on hand positioning? I’m lost and this is causing me so much discomfort that I can’t practice at all.
@kevinnickens
@kevinnickens Год назад
All in a days work bucko For the picking problem the first thing I would try is to go back to a regular pick from the Jazz 3. Jazz 3’s are great if you already have god levels of control, and you want a bit more, but the downside is they will expose every minor flaw in your right hand technique. I would recommend a thinner pick that has some give and bends a little bit under pressure. There’s this idea among metal dudes that the ultimate pick is just a quarter because it has absolutely no give and sounds super bright bc it’s metal, and I’m not saying that’s a bad idea, but if you’ve only been playing electric for 4 months I think it might benefit you to get a thinner, regular size pick. Other than changing your pick, yeah you want to move your wrist a little bit as you play across the strings. Try practicing some Jimi Hendrix/ John Mayer songs like Little Wing or Gravity because they will force you to move your hand position around in the correct way. The final thing would be to really try focusing on keeping your hand, arm, and shoulder relaxed while you’re playing. I know you mentioned that you’ve tried this, but try putting a bigger focus on this. If playing is causing you any discomfort, that always comes from tension. Discomfort when playing guitar never doesn’t come from tension, so try to be less tense. If you focus on relaxing your shoulder the rest of your arm should follow. Good luck champ

@@kevinnickens I learnt about pick slanting and realised that I had a string hopping problem. I am in the process of fixing it and I barely touch the humbuckers anymore. I’m learning how to engage my arm to lower my hand as I move to the higher strings, and I’ve been running scales and similar exercises to improve my synchronisation and speed. I also tried the songs you recommended. Thanks and keep on making content, you’re great help for newbies and your content is welcoming, easy to understand and the guitar level system is great, you leave out the bullshit too lol
