In 1955 Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar returned from a year-long hiatus with a new star and a new format. Bob Bailey took over as Dollar and producer Jack Johnstone moved it to five fifteen-minute episodes a week format. This is probably the best-known and loved incarnation of the show.
We have edited these five-part episodes to feel like a single episode. Videos of beautiful scenery have been added for a unique OTR experience.

Bob Bailey is indeed Johnny Dollar. He was born for the role I've never heard anyone convey a character only by voice as well as Bob Bailey . Funny to think my mom was in her twenties , my father was thirty, they were still married, when this show aired in spring of 1956. Thanks for posting this ,and all your time and attention to making it.

Cigarettes were .25 cents a pack in the fiftys they put em in C rations & then in a box at the door to the Mess Hall in the mornings, I used to listen to Johnny Dollar on AFN military radio station in Germany back in 1957 when I was stationed over there. J.D. brings back memories.

What makes Bob Bailey so good is, he has given consistent personality traits to the JD character throughout the many different episodes of the series. He was excellent.

I believe some citizen historians organize pub crawls for Johnny Dollar, Raymond Chandler novels and others in LA and in San Francisco. I attend one for Maltese Falcon in San Fran years ago . This is one of the best audio recordings and must for long distance driving. Lastly, Bob Baily is the best Johnny Dollar ...

What a fascinating road trip. Literally back in time. As if you were listening to the afternoon car radio if Johnny d was on in the afternoon which I doubt. It s a little dark for the afternoon. Especially in then late forties important say 1949. . I m sure you Car fans like jay Leno knew what year it was shot in the first minute a skill I don t posses thanks for the ride. . Further on up the road

Every time I find out these were 15-minute shows, I want to know how that worked. Who the hell listens to a 15-minute serial? It would be incredibly easy to miss an episode, wouldn't it? And what was it programmed with? I can't imagine listening to an evening of radio and hearing 16 different stories in an hour. Was the 15-minute format a fluke/experiment or was this fairly common?
@HearthandHomeEntertainment
@HearthandHomeEntertainment 2 года назад
The show used this format from October of 1955 to November 1956. It seems like shows were either 15, 30, or 60 minutes and a few that were 5 minutes. I think this gave stations flexibility in programming. National shows had set times but syndicated shows could fill in the gaps as needed. YTJD was a CBS show and the format change came just as radio was starting to drop in popularity. Each show recaps what has happened in the previous show so even if you missed one you could still follow along. Not sure how common it was but it lasted roughly one season before the show went back to 30 minutes once a week. Thanks for tuning in!
