"The Departure" is an illustration of the inside of my head - a conversation had with myself about an event that, though imagined for years, came to pass in an unexpected and wholly unremarkable way. I wrote it in Joshua Tree, CA, during a mentally-secluded weekend that involved a lot of hiking and writing down questions, trying to understand the divide between the life I was living and the one I'd envisioned - and why neither was ultimately satisfying. It was incredible to bring this song back to nature, to fully realize it in a physically wild, expansive place. - Claire Wellin
