Your videos are awesome! Over the last 3 years, I’ve completed a kitchen and two bathroom remodels starting from bare studs. I could barely patch a hole in a wall when I started but I learned everything I know about drywall by watching every one of your drywall videos (along with a few of your carpentry videos). I’m currently removing popcorn ceiling and skim coating my entire 2,700 sq-ft (250 m^2) ceiling and would never have attempted it without your videos. I still get complements on my drywall work from friends who are professional carpenters and home inspectors thanks to what I’ve learned from you. Keep doing what you’re doing as long as you enjoy it. I’ll be watching and liking all your videos even when I’m not specifically using the skills you’re teaching. Thanks from Dunnellon, Florida!

Someone already mentioned it, but you are really the Bob Ross of drywalling. Thats why many just watch your vids at bedtime....very ASMR lol. Your calm demeanor and excellent communication skills while doing the work at the same time is a feat not many do well. You're an excellent teacher and a pro at what you do. The way you work with mud is like someone buttering a slice of bread. So smooth and not messy at all. Do the sponsored content...we all need to earn a living. The humble ones like yourself shouldn't get screwed over. What you teach us and the way you do it is priceless. So take the time to refuel that creativity to come back stronger than ever.

As a 21 year old who has been doing this work as well as other handyman work since I was 14, ever since I found your videos it’s been some of the content I most look forward to watching. You have taught me so much and I hope to never see these videos end. I enjoy just watching you work even if there is not much explanation, just raw footage. Keep up the hard work!

A couple years back I lost a job and career and somehow got into handyman work. So I had to learn to do drywall repairs. I already knew about your channel from just home owner interest. Watching your videos helped me earn a living. There is no better channel on YT for drywall finishing. There is some very good content from other people who talk more about tools and materials. And that is also helpful. But for getting a sense of what it is supposed to look like when I have a pan in one hand and a knife in the other, your channel is the best. Thanks for what you have created.

I don't have to learn something to enjoy watching your videos. I would bet that over the recent years you have gained people who also watch you because we enjoy your work, we enjoy your projects and we enjoy you! I love the studpack channel and they stopped doing "how to" videos years ago but I love them more now than ever before now that they are just focused on the projects!

Hey Ben I started my own residential renovation company about 5 1/2 years ago, as a general contractor, but I do alot of the work myself. I owe the "growing" success of the drywall/mudding/painting components of my projects, mostly to what I have learned from following your channel and your advise. Although I still struggle with those darn pesky mud air bubbles ... lol. I guess I've been cruising along with you since when you started posting. I found your channel almost immediately after starting my company. I have enjoyed many of your videos. One that really stands out is when you visited your dad and you guys were making cedar shakes. That was pretty cool. I have to say that I owe you a debt of gratitude. I can not thank you enough for all the time, energy and resources you have invested into your channel. I will definitely remain subscribed to your channel and keep viewing your posts, in whatever form they are presented. If this is the end of Vancouver Carpenter as it used to be, if it is changing, then it is true that all good things must come to an end. I wish you all the best ! :) Terry (Calgary)

I bought a condo in 2020 that had been well-used and mostly untouched since 1970. My first drywall project was tearing out the t bar ceiling and fluorescent lights in the kitchen, and doing all the inside and outside corners because under the plastic panels the whole thing was unfinished. Armed with nothing but your RU-vid channel and what I could buy at HD, I got a result that was way better than anything I had a right to expect. So thank you for helping a DIYer like me tackle something new. I smile just about every time I look at the finished product. And yeah, you’ve probably said the same thing so many times now in so many videos that it’s getting boring. Personally, I still enjoy watching you work on projects. Would love to see the end result more often! I’d also say that it’s easy to assume that “the audience” is one fixed group of people. But new people are coming and going all the time. I guess I was just lucky that I showed up as you were really gearing up lots of how-tos. Just because it’s the 500th time you’ve said it doesn’t mean it’s the 500th time your viewer has heard it. But also maybe it’s run its natural course and you want to move on to something else. That’s okay too. Life is too short to spend it doing stuff you don’t like. Nothing lasts forever. Just gotta appreciate it while it’s here.

Hi there my old friend. Its me Cindy, your drywallery student. Haven't been watching your content religiously like I used to for two reasons, went back to school to work on bachelor's and put renovations on hold. However, you best believe I still tuned in at night to watch any content I may have missed. Must admit that I was sad to hear some of the things you mentioned in this video. That being said, I support whatever as @manzelli1981, put it best, "you've got to do what makes you feel the most congruent with your ideals". I will always support you and this channel no matter what. You are, by far, the best drywall educator on YT. Literally! I hope you know that how much I appreciate your transparency, your vulnerability, your honesty, and for always considering your viewers. I know you have given so much of yourself and just hope you recognize what it has done for many of us. I will support you all the way VC! Sending you all the love from Hawaii. I'm in SW Florida, and my home go wrecked by Hurricane Ian. Our Kitchen was destroyed. Here's the thing about Florida, the state doesn't allow out of state contractors to come in and do work and there are only so many contractors in the state. So, when a large area of homes all get wrecked, it takes a very long time to get a contractor and when you do get a contractor, you're at their mercy (it's expensive). I had never done drywall work in my life, but I sat down and went through your videos and 2-months later, I had a brand new kitchen! I didn't just restore it to its previous state, I completely redesigned it from the framing studs out - recessed tray ceiling, knock down texture (popular in Florida) and more. It cost me a few weeks to go through all your content, but you saved us thousands upon thousands of dollars and I finished it faster than we'd have ever been able to book a contractor! Our kitchen is absolutely beautiful and I have taken a lot pride in the fact I did it all myself. So, I thank you for that.

You don't make crappy videos. I am an IT person that has done his own drywall. I had to make two access hole in my garage wall to repair some insulation. You gave me the confidence to do this on my own. It turned out fantastic, even I am not sure exactly where I had patched the massive holes. You helped me complete this project and feel really good about myself in the process. If you decide to stop doing RU-vid, I am sure people would understand but the world would be lesser for it.

Been watching for four years. Never commented. This video made me sad, it also made me think of this quote: "Ask Yourself What Makes You Come Alive, and Go Do That, Because What the World Needs Is People Who Have Come Alive" Advertisements do not make people come alive, authenticity does. I love your channel, it's made me a better carpenter and generally just cheers me up. I like doing drywall because of this channel, and now i'm quite good at it and I enjoy helping friends and family with their drywall jobs. Ripples, my guy. But you've gotta do you. Personally i could watch you forever and i always get so hyped when you have a video for whatever im trying to do (like your door jamb videos). You do a really good job of providing full-scope comprehensive advice which is rare! And it's FUN! Your personality is gift to learn from! So many videos are too short and don't provide the full context or theory of WHY. THANKS FOR ALL THE VIDS!

There’s just something about the skater’s ethic. It’s a Zen-like mental state that allows for repetition with style. Whether nailing a new trick only after falling (bailing) many times or repeating the same mastered move with the grace that only those hard falls (failing) can teach… the truth is that each time (especially when applying that same ethic to work and life) is a NEW time - a new, unique instance. You bring the zen grace to drywall. Content creators of all ilks will come to your content for many years to come. The best audience is the long audience. You are like the Rodney Mullen of Northwest finishing. That said, I would love to see the traveling road show (sticking to the same format) to see how your experience translates in different markets around North and South America where supplies and tools vary. Thank you for everything you do!

Overexplaining isnt required. Drywall is an art and if you get it, you get it. Your video's are very good at slowing how not to do a specific type of joint. They are a great primer for someone who is doing this once, or infrequently. Meaning your demonstrations are good enough. I learned by doing over the years with a little encouragement from tradesmen that I knew. Thanks Ben.

Hanging corner bead is by far my favourite part of finishing. I completely agree how well a drywaller hangs his corner beads separates from other drywallers. Checking levels, evening out spaces and lining up nicely where beads meet up are the things us OCD minded finishers really notice. Even when I do long sections where 2 or more beads need to be used such as along ducting I pull out my laser so it doesn't look like I used a spegetti noodle to bead along it. Cheers from Vancouver island

I'm honestly shocked creators can make a living from RU-vid in 2019 and I say this because I was a partner making decent money around the early days, but I started my channel in 2008. I since then, Saw a rapid decrease in payout since they opened the partnership program to the majority of channels. But I also know content creation is extremely hard and repetitive. Theses days I honestly don't care for creating much, but I love watching people in the trades who work as they would, hoping I'll see and learn something new from their daily job as it's shown. Don't feel pressured to create for anyone else, and absolutely take breaks as needed. Huge respect to you and this channel

Honestly I would love to see VLOG style videos from you, specifically. Like a camera following you on a real job from start to finish, even spanning many days. Similar to the style of Perkins Builder Brother videos. There are so many questions I have about the overall timing and process of, for example, demoing old drywall in multiple rooms and then hanging and mudding new drywall on ceilings and walls, etc. I love your videos that are one-off references for specific tasks but its hard for me to imagine the end-to-end flow. Also I pick up lots of knowledge for edge cases and such from channels like Perkins where they build a home, then move on to the next home which is different in interesting ways. Thanks for all you do

I enjoy the detailed finishing work. It helps me improve on my drywall work watching a true professional describe and work his craft. I also don't mind the conversation and the learning aspects of RU-vid and your experiences within the platform. Over the past 7-8 years I've have learned a tremendous amount about building construction and finishing from both personal experience on the job working as a contractor myself and from watching RU-vidrs work their expertise on camera. To the content labels or tags or whatever aren't as appealing as what I stand to learn. Even the little details of a run of the mill job give me a leg up in my own skill level. I can sit back and watch another guy work and have the free space of mind to analyze and think about what I could do different or better. In all ways, this business of creating is in turn producing better products for me and providing me, the viewer with information that I would otherwise have to pay for or find a job within that particular trade and learn from an expert. I can learn countless skills online for free and apply it I'my life. So, Ben in my opinion your videos are the gold at the end of the rainbow and anything thing that cover's issues I might have or discusses materials and tools is of interest to me. I have been watching your videos for years and still click to watch your content when I see it just to see what's going on and what is new. I mean, even if you actually got into more carpentry I'd be clicking to see your perspective and skill level on that content. Keep on kicking, and if you decide to monetize it won't hurt my feelings! In fact I support monetization and the benefits it will likely provide for your family. That's why we work and grind is to make that green. Obviously, we have ethics and the Golden Rule but our perspective isn't really the perspective of others and it is easy to "undercharge" or sell ourselves short because of our own experiences! There is good value on this channel and you should be paid for it! Ok, I'll shut up. Much love. Thank you for the awesome videos!

I have learned so much about drywall and mudding from you and am glad you made all these videos. I hear you on "RU-vid is hard" as we have a Finance channel on RU-vid (not even monetized yet) and can attest to the fickleness of RU-vid. I would love to see you do a second channel doing woodworking and carpentry, that might relieve some of the boredom and breath life back into your RU-vid work. Anyway, love watching your videos and hope you keep it up...I have so much more to learn!

Hi Ben, I enjoyed this video as much as your “how to” content, it was like being an apprentice watching the master work whilst having an in depth conversation. I’d say make the videos you want to make and when you want to make them. Followers will always come and go. I’d also say that a little sponsorship wouldn’t hurt the content and you should benefit from the huge contribution you’ve made. Good luck with whatever directions you choose

I would 1000% watch other carpentry videos should you decide to expand to that type of content. I do love the repetition in your drywall videos too- one, it’s relaxing to watch you work, two, I learn better and get more confidence the more times I’m exposed to something. I repaired drywall in my closet the day I moved into an old house from watching your videos. Last month I took out drywall in a bathroom, knowing I’d be able to follow your videos when I put new drywall in. All that’s to say, I’m a fan. I hope the algorithm plays nicely with what you end up finding your creative passion in. It makes complete sense that you might want to take a break from YT when YT seems to constantly work against YTers. And I’m definitely not going to judge you if you decide to do sponsored content. Do what you need to do!

I don't comment often, but I just enjoy watching your videos even though right now I'm not working on a remodel project that requires more drywall work. Some people just want to see how the pros do things and listen and learn so if you run into something in the future you at least even know how to think about a problem and then solve it.

You've gotta do what's best for you, Ben. But for what it's worth, I've learned a game-changer pro tip every time I tune in to your channel - be it drywall or finish carpentry. If it wasn't for you, I never would have learned how to coat drywall angles or properly hang a door. As to sponsorship, this viewer thinks you should go for it; you've got the cred and integrity and there's got to be a ton of companies chomping at the bit to have you review their product. If you suggested a certain tool or product, I would trust that you truly believed in its value. Thanks for sharing. Please keep on keepin on a huge fan, Carpnotes

This isn't just about learning drywall (though that's part of it, of course). You have such a great mind and personality that we enjoy watching you as a person. Your voice is very soothing. It doesn't matter what you do or how you present it or if it's very original enough or not; I always enjoy watching you and seeing what you're working on. I've been a fan for many years now, not only because I’ve learned some tricks, but because there is more to your videos than that. To me, you are literally the Bob Ross of drywallers. I think you're leaving way too much money on the table by not sponsoring your videos. Almost every big RU-vidr does it, so why not? Everyone is bombarded by ads these days; one more is just 'meh'. It sucks, but if it helps you, it’s worth it. Of course, it's polarizing. Nobody will know the real pain of making daily RU-vid videos until they've done it for many years like you. I can totally understand how draining it must be, especially if you're editing everything yourself and now you're seeing the numbers going down. I must say, I’m a bit sad you chose to learn Mandarin instead of French since I'm from Quebec and It's my native language :P. But I guess the reality is different in Vancouver, and Mandarin will probably serve you better over there! Haha! I hope you realize how much you mean to your fans and how much we appreciate your hard work. Your content has a unique charm that keeps us coming back from time to time, and we’re here to support you through thick and thin. Take care of the family and yourself. Much love from Quebec my friend!

I only just discovered you a couple of months ago. I have gone back and watched old videos as well as new ones. So keep showing us how you do what you do, no need for those click-baity descriptions. I would not be against you having the odd sponsored video either if it meant you could finally realize the dream of home ownership, because I know Vancouver real estate is incredibly expensive. Just make sure it is for sponsors you really endorse. I’m so tired of RU-vidrs who in every video tell me about some product/service that they can’t live without and sometimes it contradicts the thing they were promoting in their last video. Also liked what you said about sometimes making things level can make them look worse! I have this experience in my old house where nothing is level or square and sometimes you need it to appear right to the eye versus actually being level.

Dude! The "Listen to how Ben is feeling while he's working" (this video) is reality TV gold! Honestly I think if you titled this something to indicate that, it would have a lot more views, because as much as we all come here to learn drywall, the sustainable thing is the relationship with you (think of it as "character development" in a long form drama)!

One thing I think a lot of youtubers make the mistake of thinking is that the only thing you are teaching is what you set out to teach. I remember when I started carpentry, I was watching awesome framers. They were doing something completely unrelated to how to cut sheet goods onsite. But they were cutting OSB. But they set their saw horses close together. As a result, as they cut, the sheets tried to lift in the center, but the weight of the saw and downward pressure on the base blate kept them in alignment, to get a clean cut and not bind. And then, as you release pressure on the saw, the sheets just lift at the cut line and separate themselves. no splintering or tearing, no need for overdoing cut support or balancing stuff perfectly. Just put your saw horses closer together. This was ABSOLUTELY not something they acknowledged. But it's a lesson I took, and have gotten significant mileage out of. One thing I would urge youtubers to realize is that just because you don't KNOW you are teaching it, doesn't mean it's not happening. If you are actually any good at something, it hurts relatively little to put it on the internet.

Getting some real Bob Ross vibes here 👍 Sounds like you're hitting the old mid-life crisis. It's not just TV drama BS. It's a pretty well documented life stage that goes from early 40s to about 55. Look into it. Once I understood what was going on, I at least had something to look forward to. Just turned 54 and things are looking better already.
