YouTube Censoring Captions.... WTF?! ⎮ The Stews 

This is driving me crazy, they're not only removing comunity captions but they are excluding the deaf and hard of hearing from undestanding the content of a video! And if that wasn't bad enough, it's barely even being talked about! Something should be done about this discrimination -n-

the part that really pisses me off id that they can't make up their minds on whether or not they want to have it on. yesterday we could see the cuss words in captions, but today the censoring is back again.

Ugh I know this is such an issue with Netflix too! Specifically Queer Eye. They have a good amount of cursing here and there that isn't beeped out and they just leave the entire word out of the caption. No blank no **** or anything. They just take it out.

This is coming right when they're prepping to remove community contribution (including community contributed CC--I spent all yesterday doing last minute contributions and downloading not-yet-published contribs of mine so they're not lost). I imagine it's (among other, stated, reasons) because they anticipate more people using auto-captions with the loss of that system. They *said* it was to avoid penalizing people with demonetization for words they didn't say, but considering RU-vid can tell the difference between the auto file and a published file in terms of my caption preferences, I THINK they could maybe just... not take the auto file into account for demonetization decisions... It's like they decided to do all the questionable things to captions that they could at once? (Granted, one reason for the community contrib removal was spam/CRAPtions but they were a net benefit overall, IMO.)

I totally agree. If they "beep" the bad word then the caption will say beep. But when they actually say bad word, they should say it anyway. I happens found the "live caption", which I LOVE it. They don't leave out any bad words. One time, I test both cc and live caption, oh my, they are not the same saying. Know what I mean? If you curious about live caption, it only on Android phones (I know nothing about Apple phone) anyway, click the volume and go down, you'll see live caption. Click on. Ta-da! Hope that help? FYI: some youtubers, don't put cc, that's easy to use live caption. Thanks for this video!

The worst part is the option to turn them off is on the... creators end? and the default is on? If the creator uploaded the swear, it's clear they are fine with it. Why not let the audience set to their own preferences.

Agreed completely, it's not accommodating at all when censoring the caption when the audio isn't. You don't give hearing audiences more privilege this way. Also you don't replace most letters with asterisks on the captions, i.e. when "fuck" is heard, the caption reads "f***" -- I OPPOSE that! Very good interpreters interpret EVERYTHING heard, therefore very good captionists should type EVERYTHING that is heard too. Moral is much worse in accommodation when censoring than you don't, trust me.

I agree. This surprised me. I am just curious, do US television beeping curse words? Maybe RU-vid is like that now, because RU-vid is an american based company? I'm sorry if I'm wrong. (Swedish TV doesn't beeping their programmes if anyone use curse words. They even put up CC without beeping anything.)

Most users will have the censoring turned on, but I've found some users who have turned off the censoring in the Auto Captions.

The word "Mongol" is censored so watching a documentary about the Mongol Empire is frustrating with Captions on.

Wow! I watched your video a few days ago and felt the need to come back today and comment. While watching Netflix, they did the same exact thing. I like subtitles because it helps me with listening comprehension if I miss something that they said. That is so ridiculous especially since what I was watching has warnings for language. Verbally in the episode it said "I was going to get $h!t on." The captions said "I was going to get (bleep) on." I also have noticed on Disney + that they will occasionally paraphrase in the captions instead of writing the exact phrases.

Why is the word "moron" censored yet the word "dumbass" gets to slide through easily? They mean the same thing!

I can tell you what problem this was supposed to address. I watch a lot of gameplay videos of the card game magic the gathering, and the individual cards are called all these made up fantasy words. I have seen multiple instances of these made up words being misinterpreted as outright slurs by the auto captions - I saw one video where it was happening over and over again and actually got the creator reported. I do think that “...” would be better than that at least. Of course, accurate captions are what is really needed. For auto captions, perhaps it could give an alert to creators if curse words are detected. Then they could have a chance to confirm their accuracy or change the transcript

I've been looking for a way to turn the profanity filter off because I have an auditory processing disorder and I need captions to help with that and the censoring feels infantilizing.

My guess is this is to address translating NON curse words into curse words by accident. I am guessing some people with content intended for certain conservative or sensitive audiences (including content for children) may have been seeing curse words show up where they were NOT intended. So I imagine it is not to censor places where they ARE intended, but that's the end result.

it's still mean they censor profanity and violence, and some of that stuff is entertaining. everyone's afraid of losing money, just because they're afraid of being demonetised, and bringing in sponsors to clean up the damage. i really don't understands societies hate for profanity. some say it proves weakness, but at the same time, when everything becomes pg, and the adults have too sit in the back and watch the kids have all the fun. someone's going to be a grumperalla and be super salty . we already had age restrictions. content should be you want too make it, not because of financial issues. beeping also makes me feel dumb, and just start complaining about it. sorry fear seems to run the internet now. fear,stress and financial situations. This is wrong. Why on EARTH would they censor the auto captions around the same time they removed community contributions? Thats a double-whammy for the deaf community. I mean back in 2018 yt started blanking the captions for certain words, but now it is stricter and is replaced with “ [ __ ] “. I HATE that symbol. You guys should disable that setting on your channel. I did on my channel and my clock channel aswell. I will also be disabling dont show inappropriate words on my new channel. Please note the captions also censor moron, cripple, and cretin.
