In my opinion the biggest problem is a company will give someone a free item and will give a good review for the free item.. As soon as that person sees something that comes out that's new they'll start complaining about the old item and post about it so the crybaby gets the new item from the same company they gave him the free item that he or She did the review for... It's all a game they're playing to get new free crap.. Also what happens is these reviews that say"I paid for this with my own money" Well it may be true a lot of them fail to realize that the company reimbursed them through back channels for the good review.. So there's a lot of shenanigans so I've stopped listening and watching RU-vid reviews anyways.. I only watch for entertainment and countdown to their complaining about that item..
@HALCYONphoto

I think the biggest reason behind a lot of the gear content is the majority of these RU-vidrs don’t actually shoot as a cam op/dp/prod company anymore, so their main source of income is content. So staying relevant with the newest gear, affiliate marketing is essential for their income. There are exceptions to this ofc, but as a wide observation.

You’re on point with this observation. It’s so obvious. I mean to be fair to them, a lot of them are wedding or commercial videographers where the details of gear actually kinda matter. In creative narrative work, it’s more Freeform and subjective to achieve certain look rather than the level of specs. I had someone argue with me that APSC 4k 60p is not good enough for “professional use” while ignoring that a large portion of movies were shot in super35 which is basically APSC. He also said he was a MFT user only. So idk where he was coming from

Not RU-vid related - but in the same vein... Back in the mid 90s I was line producing TV commercials here in Toronto, and had a chance to work with an 'up and coming' director. His reel was amazing, seat of the pants film making, and I had worked with him earlier on one of his short films. He was the kind of person who turned lack of gear into an asset. But on that first big gig, with all the gear and props, crew that he had always dreamed of - total sh!tshow. couldn't decide on anything because the choices were seemingly infinite. I also used to work with a Car shooter dp /director, who would come to town and always requested the 'Directors Finder Kit' from WFW. It was a road case with mismatched, scratched, and cracked B-Speeds that were only good for location scouts. But this guy shot (for the time) some of the most amazing car commercials with them. So yeah gear matters, but it's really about choosing the right gear for the gig, and not being overwhelmed.

There's a limit though - there was a whole era of people saying that you should be making films on your phone. @@meadow9 I am saying that there are films that would have benefited from not being shot on a phone, because they were a bummer to look at, and that the only reason why "High Flying Bird" and other Soderberg experiments were tolerated was because it was curio - if someone else had made films that looked weird in that way people would have been turned off and they wouldn't have had successful festival runs. Being an established name, and having people in your movie are major drivers to whether a film gets any kind of attention or distribution - quality matters to a degree but it isn't the only factor. Most people making a movie on a phone would get dismissed on the spot by a huge contingent of the audience.

Great video. I'm so sick of these RU-vid "filmmakers" who only do PTC videos plugging the latest gear. Quite often they have almost no experience in the industry and nothing on their resumes. Usually just reading out a list of tech specs in their impeccably-designed "studios" and not actually using the gear in a professional environment. There's even a couple who have online "film schools", I mean - what on earth are they teaching???

I feel like part of it is that there really WAS an explosion of appreciable and meaningful camera quality 15 years ago that continued through the mid 2010s. But at a certain point it got good enough. Like I look at 28 Days Later shot with an expensive DV cam and think "yeah I'm really glad most stuff isn't shot with this", but I look at Frances Ha shot one of the later 5Ds and think "Yeah this holds up". It was worth caring about the difference between a 5D and a consumer video camera - but it isn't really worth caring about the difference between an Komodo and BMPCC, or whatever - at least in terms of image quality. In the last few years though pretty much all cameras seem to me to be pretty capable of delivering a decent image. There's diminishing returns - in the same way that Standard Def really was noticeably different that HD, but 4K and HD aren't SO meaningfully different and the difference between 4k and 8k is only going to matter to a tiny tiny group of people.

I completely agree. One reason I'm not a fan of "I'm switching to" or "I'm dropping..." type videos is that the creator is suggesting that there are things wrong with the product they're switching from or leaving. For one, we don't even know if they are actually knowledgeable about the product they're using in the first place. Did they read the manual? Did they use the camera/product to its fullest capability? Do they even know what they're talking about? There are only a handful of creators that I will even consider basing my purchase decisions on their advice and experience. I could go on. But, you already did a great job of tackling the topic.

Most film makers don't have time to actually explain how or why their equipment really WORKS for them (and that's why Luc's channel is so useful!) but one thing I have learned after 40 years of photography (and now videography) is that GLASS is forever. Think about what you want to shoot and why - and the lenses you need for that. Like how important is autofocus to you? How important is stabilization? As a sports-doc shooter...those are kind of important to ME. How important is it to you to have bona fide cinema lenses? It will streamline decision making to base some of your camera gear decisions on your lens system needs. Oh, by the way, switching to a different lens system is really really expensive...I think I buried the lead there.

I'm really starting to get into sport videography (baseball right now) and I have a Sony A7IV. I was trying to stick with 4k60 for slo-mo shots but found 60 isn't slow enough so I gritted my teeth and started shooting 1080p 8-bit 120FPS and you know what.... it looks great. I'm getting tons of views on my Reels and Posts and people asking what camera setup i'm using. So while my A7iv has its purposes, I really don't need what I have.

This is also a problem in the music scene on RU-vid. Everyone rushes out to buy the newest thing instead of using what they have in creative ways. Gear ABSOLUTELY matters, but only insofar that you got good enough gear to work well with. I love gear and nerding out about different things, but you don't NEED to constantly buy new stuff and switch to something new. I JUST got a new camera after using my GH5s since 2017, and I'm still using that GH5s as well. Just because new stuff comes out doesn't mean that good gear is no longer good. And I want to be clear that the reason I GOT the camera is so I could handle stills at concerts better, because the GH5s is a video camera, not a stills camera.

The problem is from all thwse "honest RU-vidrs" who were given free stuff "but the video totally isn't sponsored by BRAND." People like Gerald Undone come off as extremely shady to me simply because their well intentioned videos are clearly biased and designed to push products and not just something done to help the community or be useful like their videos once were. I've completely stopped watching RU-vid camera content creators because the problem is just so bad. The best thing I can do is just get out there in film and talk to actual members of the community who do more than just make pseudo-ads and pretend they're folksy good guys just there to push out another "totally not sponsored" video. ❤

One of the biggest benefits of going through the ranks of a cam assist -> cam op -> DP type of thing is getting to see what people with more experience are actually using and what works or doesn’t using their gear. Wow, 8K but I suspect the projector was 2K and I'm not so sure the TV zooms they had fitted to the REDs were 8K rated... However, the post screening interviews seemed more about camera resolution than anything else. Really, the bottom line was that programme was so well shot and so well edited, it could have been captured with a 12 year old NEX-VG20 fitted with good lenses and nobody would have noticed.

I am pretty invested in RF glass. I'm happy with what I have. I only follow gear guru's to be aware of what's out there. Like I said, the image would have to be night and day for a switch. I just ordered an XF605 for an upcoming project because the FX6 and FX3 that were a major jump from my previous cameras that I got by with are interestingly enough not ideal for the job at hand! I'm not switching from Sony, no way, I'm just adding a different hammer to the tool box. On this fishing adventure project I've been finding myself wanting an all in one camcorder, like the XF100 I used and made a ton of money with 10 years ago, rather than the FX6, and today I went for it! Of course the irony is I'll probably shoot 1080 most of the time with it, like I do with my Sonys, and could have totally gotten a used XF205 for the task, but I figured the AF on the XF605 would be a bit better, and having 4K would come in handy too. The camera will pay for itself pretty quickly, so it's all good! The great thing is that because I know the FS7 and FS5 are still in operation all these years later, I'm sure the FX3, FX6, and now XF605 cameras will likely last me the next 5-10 years or so before I would even consider an upgrade. Broadcast hasn't really caught up to 4K yet anyway, so we've hit a pretty sweet spot for owning cameras today! For what I do, I couldn't even fathom needing 6K or 8K. All I'd be interested in future models of these cameras would be better shutter, better sensitivity, better audio inputs (looking at you FX6), and VND on the Canon. The reasons I chose the XF605 over the Z90 or Z190 was that the XF605 still has the InfraRed feature, which I still want to use sometimes, plus the touch focus (not on Sony) and 4K10 bit if I need it. Was hoping to see a Sony update to their camcorder lineup at NAB that would have given us an S-Cinetone camcorder to make color matching a little easier, but crickets. Looking forward to camcorder life again!

Buying kit in New Zealand is difficult because you often can't get your hands on the physical kit before you buy it. I bought a Sony FX30 after watching Phillip Bloom's youtube review/rant and it's been fantastic. Paid itself off in 3 months. The mistake I made was listening to the youtube hype around the Tamron 17-70 f2.8. Everyone said it was great... and I found it nothing but disappointing. So much so I thought I'd made a big mistake buying the FX30. Then I talked to some other camerapeople and bought a used Sigma 18-35 f1.8 with 7Artisans adapter. What a difference... 10 year old lens kicking ass for about half of what the Tamron had cost. If the youtubers had been a bit more critical with their reviews and highlighted its flaws I might still have bought the 17-70 for the range it provides but I wouldn't have been expecting unrealistic performance.

In my case I'm not constantly buying gear, I know I'm not constantly buying gear but I still feel drawn to watch these videos, so what's my use for them? Mostly entertainment, and to see what kind of crazy rig or shot ideas these youtubers will go through to make the gear look super "EpIc". If I remind myself of that then I don't get the gear joneses, but when I forget that it's easy to think, "OH I NEED XYZ". Truth told I've been working as a filmmaker since 2006, and typically I find that most gear has a shelf life of about five years before I'll wear it out, and about 10 years before there's some significant tech standard change requiring replacement. All that said I've never made squat from camera resale services unlike some of my friends who swap out their kit every two years. Not sure financially who works out better in the long run, I'd like to think it's a pay a little over time verses a big payment every now and then thing but never crunched the numbers.

I was thinking about why these videos make me angry. Normally I couldn't care less, maybe because it is just pure consume focused click-baiting content. Maybe because they sort of degrade a true craft. They are not working professionals but this audience probably wouldn't be big enough for going viral. RU-vid is their main playground with an audience of product focused people who maybe don't even do film in any sort. The words creators, filmmaker and artist have quite suffert from social media, I think. But there is still a lot of really cool creative stuff out here, we just have to search a bit more and spend less time with anger

In 2021 I bought an used A7c and to this day I love shooting with it. (stills and video) Got only 2 lenses, but I didn't need any more since I could shoot everything I wanted. Adding some rig stuff and a decent mic I feel I have a pretty good setup. Last weekend I got hired as a 1. AC and I brought most of my gear to rig out an A7siii. (pretty much all gear used was mine, accept the camera and gimbal) Was this camera "better" than mine? on paper: yes Could we have shot everything with mine? for sure. What made me happy, was the fact that all the gear I purchased from my tripod to my rods and stuff was perfect to use the camera in the best way for this shoot. (tripod, handheld, gimbal) I may have spend a lot on the smaller rig parts, but all the bigger investment felt like they made me better in my craft and I still use them.

Gear inferiority complex is part of GAS, you always feel the thought "oh if i had that one then i could do such and such a thing" i had it with guitars.. kind of have it with video cameras (sometimes it can get bad) BUT I'm a recovering Gas addict so am alot more sensible with it these days. If the moneys not there, just stop yourself it can always wait! Be happy with what you have and make a little plan to build gradually. You'll find everything you buy will be used well because you've thought it through properly

I keep telling my friends about the RU-vid Filmmaker culture problem. They forget that output (art and process) is more important than focus on this consumer rich mentality saga of which is best equipment. They get mad at me but I know I'm right. :)

Personally, as someone who aspires to do gear reviews as a part of my channel, I want to cover aspects that I find are missing with regards to how to get the best results from your gear. Too many youtubers talking about the latest and greatest, rather than roundups and comparisons. Caleb Pike for example doesn't cover gear just to sell you something, he does it to help you get the best with what you own so that you DON'T need to buy something (or at least gives you a range of values at every price point). And even if he is talking about how something is super cool, it's from the "here's how I'm able to use it in all these different ways" rather than just a surface level show and tell. I think people pick up on when a creator is showing gear to save people money/are passionate about quality of life features, and when they're doing it to pad their pockets. A review should be honest and unpaid, produce value and inform people of positives and negatives. Rather than this weird "I've been given this $5000 lens, but don't worry that I have nothing bad to say about it because it's not sponsored" hellscape.

This was fantastic and gives me some validity in what I do. I've been shooting real estate since 2020, and have been using the same Blackmagic pocket 4k since then - I've had some other videographers in the space ask me why I'm still using it, which I simply reply that it's just a solid camera, and I'm going to use it until it won't work anymore.

As a working videographer, I rely on 4 sets of gear - Speed, Stamina, Stealth and Show. Speed gear for multiple setups within a short schedule. Stamina gear for days when it's is not safe to leave equipment unattended and must be carried on your body. Stealth gear in place of permits. Show gear for impressing clients who needs to impress their clients on sets.

These creators are in for a bad time if they ever happen on an actual set or production. I personally work in advertising and news gathering, news ecosystem is around 15 years behind in technology since reliability and ease of use is the main concern and you hardly ever need the bells and whistles. The biggest newspaper photographers are out there with their Canon 5DmkII still going strong and 4K is pretty much unheard of. If you make your living from your footage you don't want the newest tech, you want something that's proven and rich with online resources. On the other hand, if you make your living from affiliate marketing...

Yeah. 100% agree. I'm using like 30% of what my Sony A7IV can give me. Made a mistake buying S5IIX. Sold it and invested in lights ... much better money spend. I know dudes shooting commercial work on FS5s and FS7s ... and their results are much better then other dudes with newest RED Komodos. I stopped watching "I switched to XXX ..." videos 2-3 years ago, when I realized in most cases these people do not utilized 20% of their current cameras.

RU-vidrs need to make money, they will produce factual videos still. Those videos will garner more views and click rate. It is up to us to analyse and be matured. We do not need to follow everything that is right. And all the right things might not be relevant to everyone. Make a judgement call.

I love gear... now, i am writer/director but, i like having access to gear to do a quick project or a bigger project. I work with one DP for the most part and he is skilled. I have always gotten a piece of equipment for a shot or an entire project but, I may have reached the end of the rainbow for gear.

Until we have access to a full production crew and kit everything as a self shooter or small crew is a compromise and new tech and new gear usually represents a new way to make the gap to higher production values that much less noticeable. Every piece of new gear should in theory solve a problem or open a door to a new way of filming. Having a slider is different from having a gimbal. If you want an elegant push in ala Deakins then there are only two ways of doing that. A dolly or a slider. Pay more and the slider is on rails and may be motorised. All new gear and new tech constantly making previously unavailable shots available. Having a 4d allows certain shots otherwise problematic with a gimbal. Not many could afford a steadicam or operator so once again having new gear and new tech is progressive. There are so many pieces of tech that i am afraid do make a difference. Sure traditional filming is pretty unchanged especially in docs but there is a need to have minimum production requirements for gear and most people watching youtube simply dont have access to that professional level yet and so are on a constant quest to mitigate those necessary compromises due to budget by finding and accessing new gear that solves problems or elevates the production value of the work at an affordable cost. In a competitive industry anything that can give an edge is worth investigating. Being able to light is a whole revolution in led tech and battery tech that is constantly evolving. Unfortunately new gear promises a lot and perhaps doesn’t always deliver and that really is perhaps a reason to focus on making what we have work most effectively. The issues with youtube and gear is primarily due to so many people talking nonsense just to make a timely opportunistic post and to maintain the quota for the algorithms. Also most RU-vids are nothing more than salesman for affiliate links and that in itself simply promotes poor information and an over emphasis on buying new gear. Do yourself a favour and never buy from an affiliate link. Dont encourage them. Buy second hand whenever possible. Meanwhile thanks for the video.

I found it to be the best analogy, if you tell a good story, you can tell it at a camp fire. You don`t have to have those people sitting in a theater. But yes, gear does matter. Because pro gear just works. You have time to focus on story and other aspects of storytelling. not problem solving problems caused by diy-gear.

Hey Luc - Another video that needed to be made. I literally went into this current doc with a list of stuff I thought I would need. I have been using my fully rigged out EOS R6 since 2021 on my last Doc and I wouldn't trade it for the world . Hooked up to a Brick and a Ninja V and I can shoot pro-res all day. So looking at this current doc I thought about the usual stuff - sliders, drones, etc (what every video on here is about) but what I really needed - much less sexy was an actual B-Cam to replace my iPhone B-Cam. Now being self funded I knew I had to be frugal but it needed to match the R6. So off to Adorama and I picked up a used EOS RP and with the 50mm and another Ninja V I literally just upped my game on this doc. Other toys would have been sexier (gimbals, steady cams) but having a two camera shoot when you are a one man band is , and I hate this term, a game changer. Get what you need and hold on to what works. Thanks once again for speaking about what is usually in my head. Cheers - C

It's not the look really ,but how newer gear can just make actually doing the work easier , as you say . FF sensor does make interviews in small spaces easier , just because you are on a longer lens for the same shot , and personally ,now, I would never want to do back shooting doc/corps on a camera without VND built in , that is something that really has changed the look too.

After all, this is 14 minutes of gear presentation. I think a lot of people believed in the truth of this video. For me, it's just another "what's in my video bag" type of video and self-presentation.

youtube in general has a problem. i loved it and told many young peeps to use it for education but i cant recommend it anymore. its full of misleading information aka hidden advertising and kinda everyone says the same with a bit different working. its like most youtubers are already controlled by ai 😄 if youre already experienced you may find a way around the bias to uncover the hidden gems of knowledge that are still there, but as a newbie - no chance. you better do it like in the old days: find someone who really does the stuff you wanna do and learn from this person in person.
