Welcome once again to RU-vid Live on Cast Iron Wednesday, where we will be discussing the history of possibly my favorite cast iron manufacturer: Birmingham Stove & Range. This American manufacturer had been largely forgotten after it went out of business in the 1990s, but the recent boom in cast iron cooking has resulted in a lot of Internet research, revealing the history of this company and much of the great cookware it produced. Come and join us on RU-vid Live, as we spend time discussing and looking at cast iron pans from Birmingham Stove & Range.

BS&R employees Billy Washburn and Mike Bryan create the eight-wedge cornbread skillet, which sold 1 million in its first two years of production. It sold for $1.19 each in 1967. In the 1980s Frank Martin, Hugh Rushing, vice president of marketing for Birmingham Stove & Range, created Frank’s Handy Dan Cornstick Pan. BSR allowed employees to come in on Saturdays to work on their ideas and projects.

I just acquired a Birmingham Stove and Range Red Mountain Series 8Z skillet. It has a lot of outer surface black carbonized seasoning. I need to search your channel for best method of restoring it. Except for surface rust under the carbonized seasoning, it is in excellent condition. My wife and son (who is a chef) will be putting this BSR cast iron skillet to good use when it is finished. It will be a useful addition to the pre-1960 3 notch 8 Lodge cast iron skillet that my wife inherited from her father. Thank you for the information you provide on this channel.

This is great. My family has passed down at least one cast iron pan to every grandkid, myself included, and turns out it’s a BSR. Really good info, and it cooks like nothing else!

One of my favorites is the 40's BSR #7P skillet, right up there with my Canadian made, wood handled Findlay no. 90. These Griswold and Wagner Cadillacs of cast iron still need their Toyota Corollas, like Lodge and BSR, always getting you where you need to go reliably.. without warping on electric stoves.

I just bought a rusty pat. pending wedge pan. I was also born in 1967, when I researched and found that out I felt a connection to it. I plan on restoring it once the weather warms up, plan on making a electrolysis tank.

A couple of gallons of vinegar will do the same job. Stick the pan in some sort of tub and let the vinegar do the work. It can take up to a week depending on how crusty and rusty it is.

57:36. It is pronounced "Deesa". It is a Danish company that makes Disamatic molding equipment. If you see a D on a Lodge pan, that was the type machine it was made on. The "H" is the Hunter molding equipment. The "C" was the cope and drag molding system. Lodge after acquiring multiple types of molding equipment, marked the patterns with a lettering system for the type of equipment the casting was made. Lodge discontinued the old cope and drag and Hunter system in the early 2000's. Now all their molding is done on Disamatic equipment.

I have a Trout corn stick skillet/pan , that I feel is from BSR and not the newer Lodge Eddie Bauer Trout skillet from the 90s. I think I can recall seeing back in early 70's at my grandpa's basement wall.

I have a no name skillet I inherited , after lots of photo searches to find out who actually made it Im pretty sure it's a BSR...MADE IN USA and on the opposite side NO. 8 10-5/8 ( the lettering style also matches photos ive found) ...pretty sure it was purchased in the late 60s, very smooth ( I assume they were machined smooth?) I sold my newer lodge skillet after using the BSR, the smooth surface was an excellent performer and 50+ years of seasoning build up

CIC, I've two questions: 1) just like you, I like the heavier CI, but which do you think is heavier: BSR, vintage Lodge or Martin? These are my favorite brands but I don't have the same size in all three brands to compare weight. 2) which is rarer, the BSR 6 piece Cornbread Skillet or the 8 piece Cornbread Skillet. Sorry that you did break your wrist but it did result in your discussing BSR and Lodge cookware; these topics put me in hog heaven. Maybe one day, you can talk about Martin too. Again, I enjoyed learning more about BSR tonight and how they went out of business..

I bought what I believe is an unmarked favorite piqua ware, the only markings is 5 I on the bottom. The font, shape of pan and heat ring appear to be the same as Favorite. I think it will be an awesome piece once it's restored. Do you have much information on these?

Eric, thanks for another interesting, informative video. We have quite a few BSRs, from 3S to 14. We have probably 20 ash trays with the grooved handle. Almost all with an ad inside from appliance stores to hardware to gas companies. They are fascinating. Also have 2 with the deep cigarette grooves and the pointed handle. Didn't know they might also be BSR.
@castironchaos
@castironchaos 3 года назад
Even though that ashtray at the beginning said BSR, I don't know if BSR regularly produced those ashtrays with that shape. On the other hand, Wagner and Lodge did make a number of ashtrays with that shape.

I found it interesting yours says BSR in it. Mine show quite poor quality. We also have a few Wagners and Lodges and they all show very good workmanship. Same as their skillets. But this is a BSR comment so I won't prattle on. Thanks again.

The most common BSR recast we have found over the past couple of years is the #7. Either that or alot of them were very poorly made. Appears to be cast the same depth of the heat ring. This make the bottom to be raised and flat. Kinda funny looking compared to other BSR irons.

I recently bought and restored a BSR red mt. skillet. After removing it from my electrolysis tank I was surprised to see the size and mold mark had been pasted over, from the mold I presume. The skillet is neither a size 8 or a size 7 ,more a 7 and a half. Also there is a hand scribe unusual 8 on the top handle

so, after a year i had to do a rerun on this one, @14:56 ; the pan with the uneven surface [ scratchy lumps, craters and valleys] was marked, "NO. 8-B [7] 10 1/4 IN" with "MADE IN USA" at the top and a "1.." over the made in..........and it's a smaller 10 1/4" than a lodge. it was on sale and came in a set. the #3 and #5 are flat but were the first pans i ever encountered that were not glass smooth but still became fine cookers... they were wax coated, needed a clean and seasoning so that with the #8 i thought it was bad stuck on wax or bad seasoning, very confusing at the time....i seldom used that #8 for the longest time till i went at it with an avanti pro smoothing disk.....futility persisted till i recently revisited and tactically re-smoothed [60 grit] and re-seasoned it....and so at last with a perfect glass lid it works very well as a meat and brazier pan.....in honuor of "stumpy" i named her "grumpy" but upgraded to "lumpy" in light of her newly discovered usefulness....oh and i probably bought them around 1989........pretty long story huh..??..!!!....

Have you seen a BSR pan with a flat head screw head on the bottom, I have seen the Phillips head but not the flat head. Do you know the year they were made?
@castironchaos
@castironchaos 7 месяцев назад
The screw imprint was actually a quality control method. When the production staff suspected a pattern was wearing out and developing flaws, they would put an imprint of a screw into it. This helped them keep track of the pans produced by a particular mold or payttern. This was done much more often during the Century Cookware series, though there have been a few rare instances of it appearing on Red Mountain pans.
@waynethebarber1095
@waynethebarber1095 7 месяцев назад
@castironchaos Thank you for answering so fast. Could this pan be a be a Century or Red Mountain series? It's a No.5. 81/2 inch with a stove ring. And the flat head screw mark is very pronounced. Could you give an approximate date on this? I know this is hard without pictures.... This pan was just given to me by a friend. He also spoke of a pan he has with a spider embossed on it. That sounds cool too... Thank you for taking the time to help me with this. I really appreciate your help with this.

I got a skillet with an 8 on the bottom and 3 notches in the ring around the edge. There is one at the 3, 9 and 12 o'clock positions. My question for you is... Can you repair a skillet like this that is cracked? The crack is 3 inches long but it does not appear to leak at all. The only time the crack is evident is when you first put heat to it.
@castironchaos
@castironchaos 3 года назад
With a three inch crack, I'd have to advise not using the pan and discarding it. Repeated heating and cooling of the pan would eventually make the crack even bigger and lead to the pan breaking completely. Cast iron can be welded, but it's not easy and many repair persons won't do it because it's difficult.

Martin Stove & Range is far more hard to get information about!!! Perhaps not their skillet's but I haven't been able to collect any information on my Martin Stove & Range woodburning stove with 4 eye's, a 2 door oven, a biscuit warmer with a frontend firebox! The only thing I have found is that it was produced between about 1912 and 1917!!!

After doing some research over here; www.modemac.com/cgi-bin/wiki.pl/Birmingham_Stove_and_Range (thank you for that) I find my BS&R NO.8 was made from 1968 to sometime in the 70s. Is there a date when they started stamping mold ID numbers? It looks like the one in your thumbnail. i.imgur.com/IjlUhrL.jpg i.imgur.com/53BRkD0.jpg I haven't used it today, but there's always supper. :-) I graduated high school in 1967 so, to me, this is a "new" skillet.
