It would only ruin the temper if it got to forging heats aka 2000° F. It would have to be glowing red or have the "oil stain" or blue tinge to it for it to even effect the temper in any way possible.

@@tanktoptitans1643 that really isn't true. When you're tempering a knife, you usually take it to 200-250°C depending on the steel. As soon as you see the steel change colour to a dark plum, you've softened the steel and ruined the temper

Never put a butane torch or any flames near the edge of a quality knife... you could ruin the temper and lose the edge retention and sharpenability.
