Ys X Nordics had its own pride of place in John Linneman's Best Games of 2023, based on his PlayStation 5 experience, and having now taken a look at the game running on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 Pro, he's even more eager to tell you more about it. Currently it's Japan-only, but it's almost certainly coming to the West - and here's how it's shaping up.

I got talked into starting the Kiseki series a couple of years ago despite the length and started by bouncing around between Sky and the Crossbell games. I almost gave up on Sky a couple of times because of the glacial pacing of FC. Then I started Cold Steel a month ago and blitzed through it. It finally clicked. I understand why people love this series so much now. Falcom are great devs that know how to leverage their strengths (writing, basically) whilst keeping costs down and somehow releasing a new game every year.
@electricindigoball1244

@@agromchung Just a heads up before you'll continue with Cold Steel: you'll really want to finish Crossbell games before playing CS3 (even CS2 has parts that expect the player to have played the Crossbell games). The Sky trilogy is also relevant to both the Crossbell duology and the latter two Cold Steel games.

@@jtruque -AFAIK Falcom hasn't said anything regarding new re-releases of Trails in the Sky in Japan or otherwise.- With that being said the Sky games are available in English on PC (Steam and GOG). Even if you just have a weak laptop you should still be able to play them just fine due to how old those games are. You can even configure them to work with a PS4/PS5 controller. Edit: After seeing the comment below I looked into this and apparently Falcom is considering its options regarding a Sky re-release. With that being said it's worth keeping in mind that an English re-release of Sky will run into the issue of Trails publishing rights being split between XSEED who localized the Sky trilogy as well as the first two Cold Steel games and NISA who is the current publisher of Falcom games in the west.

Years later, I was introduced to Ys through Ys VIII. I went back the next year to play through all the games available in the series. No one probably knows what I'm talking about, but the strange thing about the 1990 Ys Book I&II on the TG-16 CD system is that even though it was made with the expectation for 4:3 aspect ratio, it feels like it was originally meant for 16:9 and the screen looks smooshed on 4:3. I never have seen anyone talk about this. If you bring the aspect to 16:9 it looks more "normal."

Generally, it seems like JP players just don't care enough about graphics for a format like this to make sense, many will just generally talk about graphics being good or bad or sth. inbetween. @@anabang1251 Sad but true. And that mindset isn’t limited to video games. I don’t know if you know this, so sorry if I tell you something you already know, but basically as a consumer they’ve been brought up to just buy without asking more than which brand something is from. I’m from Germany and you wouldn’t believe how many test/review magazines there are for everything, still to this day. I know no one who doesn’t buy a magazine and/or informs themselves online diligently before purchasing something that costs more than a couple of bucks. Here in Japan? There is one magazine that tests household appliances and other items but it’s so shallow that the result is mostly yeah the big brand expensive one is good. It’s completely baffling. Then again when I go to the doctor here it’s also this 曖昧 bs like “Oh, your throat is red, I’ll give you some antibiotics.” and I’m like soo you won’t tell me what it is but it’s red? Am I a child or do you not know what it is? The doctors in Germany tell you exactly what you have or what they think you probably have and which other possibilities there are. It’s maddening here in Japan. Alas, sorry for the rant but it felt nice to read from someone who knows the pain. ;)

Thank you for also taking a look at the PS4 Pro version for us people who don't own a PS5 yet :) I hope they release this version over here too. Might also be a candidate for getting an update for the Switch successor maybe?

Happy seeing YS being covered! hoping to see if Kuro No kiseki will get covered as the new engine they used for it is excellent.

Just finished the game on PS5 and really love the combat! Normal difficulty is too easy if you played other YS titles so I recommend start with hard mode at least. Pulling off flash guard and flash evade feels great and those boss fights are definitely the highlight of the game with these mechanics. After you beat the story mode there's also a time attack mode where you can fight a specific boss or do a boss rush from the first one to the last. You can also customise skills, stats augments and some of your equipments slots specifically for this mode which is really a nice touch. Heck I just really wish those Souls game have this mode! I love fighting boss but hate starting a new playthrough everytime to do that😅

I was impressed by how much more fun traversal was improved between 8 and 9. I am glad to hear that 10 is as big of a jump!

I picked up Ys 8 a few years ago on a whim and was hit by what a breath of fresh air it was. I'm nearing the end of Ys 9 now and I think I gotta hop on board for 10. Each game feels distinct and tries to do something interesting with its choice of single major location.

You should try Ys SEVEN, it was the first one in full 3D and where toy played as a party of 3 characters. It was built for the PSP, but there's also a PC port.

I'm glad to see that DF loves Ys too! There is no bad Ys game, one of my favorite franchises that I recommend to everyone! Happy with the new engine and new mechanics, but honestly, the game should run better on PS4.

Always love any and all Falcom content! Have you ever considered covering the trails series at all or (more specifically) DuranteA’s ports? Some of the highest quality porting work from a small studio I’ve ever seen

I played through Ys VIII on Switch when it came out in English & thought it played just fine, though I did know that it wasn't the best version out there. I still haven't played Ys IX yet, but it's nice to see that Ys X is the best Switch port yet. I got into the Ys Series after Book I & II came out on the Wii VC, so I'm super glad to see the newest entry here on DF, even if it's "ahead" of any potential English release. For any Switch owners out there, it's also worth pointing out that the OG version of Ys I, the PC-88 version, is confirmed to be getting released via D4 Enterprises' Eggconsole series, and while I know it's not the "ideal" version of the game anymore, I'll definitely be buying that once it comes out, because I really want to play Ys I in its primordial form on my Switch.

John thanks for the heads up! I really dug Ys IX (it was the first Ys game I played) and I had no idea this was even in the works (let alone already out in Japan).

It's always nice to see mainstream AAA games being covered in this channel but with Ys being the subject on this video, I really hope more and more niche games will be getting reviewed on this channel more often

Bravo review, as always! A small correction: Ys X is also available in Taiwan and Hong Kong, localized and distributed by Cloud Leopard with PS5 and PS4 in one bundle package. Hope this would be the way when it eventually released in US market.

I highly did not expect to see this game get any coverage here, really glad to see it! Would be nice if you guys can check out the Atelier franchise sometime, those games while being quite niche have superb presentation for the studio's limited resources AND somehow manage to run pretty much on-par presentation-wise across all platforms.

Thank you for this video John! My first Ys game was 8 and I absolutely loved it. Monstrum Nox wasn't as great as Lacrimosa of Dana, but still a good game. After watching this video I'm even more hyped for Nordics, looks awesome. Hopefully it'll come to PC as well.
