The most “natural” artist-virtuoso I’ve seen since Nathan Milstein. He uses the organic resonances of his superb violin as his base for his authentic and authoritative phrasing and wide palette of colors, textures, nuances. I just love his clarity and honesty. Impeccable technique, yet at the service of the music and never to draw attention to himself. Like Milstein, Kerson Leong connects the dots on the page to weave a cohesive architecture from the very first note to the last. It’s easy to get lost and not find your way out from the complexity of this piece. This was a riveting and deeply personal account of the Ballade and it may now be my favorite. Thank you!

Somehow I found it difficult to think of the third sonata for solo violin by Ysaye being played in a church.

I know this question is really basic and there is no intension to neglect your exceptional artistry beyond the instrument techniques by asking this question, but I am very, very curious about this.. I’ve been watching your videos these days (my fav one is your vlog on practicing! Also the art of etude series is phenomenal) and maybe you would answer..slow practicing..? I watched this particular one for many times now and the more I watch the more I feel you have a clear vision or mind-map of how you picture this whole piece in one organic unit. Perfect example of being so rational in structures and pacing yet so instinctive and spiritual performance! I’ve heard this piece numerous times, but your performance shed a new light on this all time favorite piece. You mentioned the mental practicing in one of your vlogs, and I clearly see that you used your own imagination as you performed and what is so marvelous to see is that your absolute control on your body. Your spirit leads the body movement, therefore the body is always subordinate to the spirit, which is the transcendent quality of musical performance.
