22:07 maestro states the hard facts right in the face of young musician, but somehow he doesn't sound aggressive nor hostile. genuine care and matter-of-fact combined wonderfully. that is some sublime teaching.
i actually aspire to be john. playing this piece at 14? are you serious? i could say everything incredible about this for days and still not have said enough.
This young violinist is too young to understand this piece in my opinion.. it sounds like an etude with still a lot of work.. but my respect that he is performing it!
I am sorry to say but he did not nail it he really made a tremendous amount of mistakes he did not play musically and he had numerous technical problems that will need to be solved.
You guys should really turn off the comments even though this video is old. The things people are saying about this young violinist would be enough to make anyone want to quit being a musician.
John Qiu is a virtuoso, in every aspect of his being. Intelligent, charismatic, and hard-working, he is a person that many aspire to be. However, he is often unable, and perhaps unwilling, to recognize these admirable traits regarding himself. As such, the man who goes by Gustav M has written the following essay in order to prove to Mr. Qiu that he is a truly wonderful person. This youthful gentleman is the epitome of modern violin playing. Truly a master of his craft. Many people wish they could be half the man Mr. Qiu is, with his being in this position causing a high amount of stress. It's simply incredible how well he could play under these circumstances. Such a fine young lad at this age, with the opportunity to make an appearance in not only a masterclass, but also one of the world’s top youth orchestras. However, his talent is not limited to only the violin. This young man plays not one string instrument, but all of them- and exceeds beyond one’s wildest imagination. Learning at an astonishing rate for someone at his age, he is able to play with more enthusiasm, accuracy, and versatility than peers with far more experience and practice. Teachers and students alike are astounded with his progress and improvement, although he may not recognize it himself. John, with his limitless social talent and charisma, was also able to create a successful community of peers, both online and in the real world. He’s brought many different people together, able to bond over their affection for some of the most mundane things. Many friendships have been forged over the flames of this young man’s accepting heart. For some of the members, he’s provided a home where they can feel safe and enjoy interacting with others, where they would otherwise withdraw. For those who wish to expand their horizons, he’s given them a means to keep in touch with people otherwise inaccessible. And these people, for the most part, are not ordinary in the slightest- many are incredibly intelligent and talented young individuals, and even they look up to John as a leader, teammate, and most importantly, a friend. It would be of no surprise if at this age, this handsome young man has managed to find himself a romantic partner, also the principal violist for a local orchestra. And the reasons for this young man’s greatness doesn’t end there. Mr. Qiu has demonstrated an almost unbelievable prowess in all subjects of school, including the sciences, mathematics, history, language arts, foreign language, athletics, artistry, and more. He has participated in the Purple Comet Math Competition, the AMC 8, AMC 10, and has prepared extenuously for the AIME. Looking from different perspectives, we see a similar rate of success. As a constant viewer of John’s work, this man is continuously astounded by the amount of passion and emotion weaved into his words, whether they be for a research essay, a book report, an application essay, or a narrative. His strings of words are not simply words; they are a beautiful representation of John as a person. The ultimate problem persists: the crux of society - endlessly sought after - remains missing. The world is lost of a source of radiance, a fountainhead of the true blessings of the human condition, a basis for good and a dominator over evil. Where is the savior? Where is the centerpiece? Yet, John Qiu determinedly strides forward, effulgent in his beauty, passionate in his love, striking forth a path for a greater future. He is the ultimate revolutionary, the master of virtue and the glittering sword of valor. Weaving together elegance with emotion, intensity with brilliance, power with dashing agility, John Qiu stands, the world bowed before him in humble respect. It is the Second Coming, it is Judgement, it is Salvation. It is John Qiu. And he is the pristine future of humankind.
@@dorothyzhang2090 Thank you very much. So many young rabble rousers in the comments are laying needless hate upon the young John, don't they know that this is detrimental to his progress and his will to pursue violin? I am truly disappointed in Generation X.
1st Get better intonation, this is a beautiful unquestionably unique piece but if the the double stops are not correct the piece is not correct 2nd EMOTION sells the piece
John Qiu unequivocally captures the spirit and intensity of Ysaÿe's masterpiece here- he gives the work life and spirit that is uplifting and heart-warming. I am at a complete loss for words. Not only are the technically demanding passages flawlessly executed but the underlying story, the true beating heart of the piece, is manifested brilliantly. This performance is undoubtedly at the zenith of perfection; it unconditionally breathes the life of musical passion into the universe. This is violin playing that inspires, that raises human society to another degree. Sublime. What a handsome young man! ;).
Sorry, but It wasn't. There are a lot o technical problems mainly with his double stops, bow distribution which direct affected the character of the music. Not to say that it was a bad playing (after all he is just 13), but Mr. Zander was right about the piece being above his level of playing at the moment.
@@JoaoPedroBittencourt I totally agree. There's a lot of this sort mindless praise on the internet (and this comment section in particular) unfortunately. I think the boy would be much happier if he lets his technique develop before tackling a monster like Ysaÿe 3.
I think somebody should urgently address his bowing technique. In particular, he should be encouraged to uncurl the first finger of the right hand so that he is not gripping; in my view that will improve all kinds of things about his playing, including unlocking the sound. He has talent, but this technical problem will hold him back.
Big boy piece for a young man. Maestro is working his best to express the thoughts behind the work. But he's so so so young. I think he needed easier to understand examples. Johnny is thinking about playing and not about expressing. It's the fault of his age. Not his fault.
The poor boy was locked up in his own bubble! He needs to work on his fundamentals and go back to the basics. No sense of musicality whatsoever, let along playing this difficult piece. He could probably benefit from a violin that has a deeper tone.
I’m sorry. Play an easier piece. Vibrato is tight, intonation is way off, tone sucks, interpretation is awful. There’s obvious talent but the nature in which it’s being nurtured is absolutely horrific. Stick to standard student repertoire first.
I must say, you have never reached this kind of success before. If you had, you would understand what John should be feeling, playing right in front of a great conductor. I would like to see you do better.
Jaewon Kim also it doesn’t matter who he is playing for. He should have prepared the price well enough to play it perfectly under pressure. Since he was unable to do so, he should play an easier piece. Simple logic
@@bushyy.5696 there are all sorts of professionals out there that make mistakes. Even they realize that they are flawed. Do you think John was perfectly happy after this masterclass? Ofc not. He doesn't need others bashing on his flaws. Who do you think you are to comment on his flaws? I admit that he was flawed in some aspects, but you shouldn't degrade his effort in a place he can access so easily. Furthermore, are you happy calling his playing "absolutely horrific"? It is because of people like you that famous musical artists kill themselves, like Sulli and Goo Hara. Oh wait, you don't know who they are? Probably because you did not give a second thought about your harmful actions.
lmfao imagine thinking u know how to appreciate music when you’re gonna just gonna shit talk someone who worked super hard to do well on this piece. if you think you can do better that’s great for you but if you’re going to spit out negative feedback at least say something helpful. the player can see all these comments.
