Tears welled in Cone’s eyes speaking to Filipino reporters after the game, saying the last time he cried after a basketball game was when Gilas lost to China in the semifinals of the 1998 Asian Games.
Gilas went on to take the bronze that year.
Justin Brownlee presided over the incredible, unthinkable comeback by hitting five three-pointers in the fourth quarter. He had two in the final 90 seconds where the Filipinos erased a 71-76 deficit.
The Chinese, taller and faster and looking so good on home soil, seemed well on their way to victory and into the gold-medal match when they led by nine points in the final 3:07. At that time, the Filipinos were missing free throws like they were taken from 20 feet.
“I don’t know what to say on how Justin made all those shots down the stretch,” said Cone.
The host team and its horde of fans got off to a strong start to lead by nine, 15-6, heading into the last two minutes of the opening period.
But the Filipinos, with June Mar Fajardo, Scottie Thompson and Brownlee finding the urgency, got out of the hole before it got even deeper to equalize the count at 15-all.
After a brief break, the Chinese stepped on the gas anew, and dropped an 11-2 bomb, for another double-digit lead at 30-19.
A huge triple capped that quick Chinese breakaway and got the full-capacity crowd cheering and waving their tiny red flags.
With seven-footer Wang Zhelin inside, the Chinese unleashed a 6-2 spurt for a beautiful 15-point lead at 36-21. Three unmolested layups on the run gave them a 42-26 lead.
China took a 20-point lead at 46-26 before ending the first half up by 18, and the Filipinos in big trouble.
Now in the final, Gilas is bound to end a 25-year medal drought in the Asian Games, dating back to 1998 when it won the bronze. The last time the gold medal was won by the Filipinos was in 1962.
Gilas will face Jordan in the final tomorrow.
The victory will finally bury the ghost of the Philippines’ heartbreaking loss to South Korea in the semifinals of the 2002 Busan Asian Games.
