Even at her worst, Aki was better than the other 4 female leads though. She never became Damsel in Distress, she actually had good victories even at the end of the show, and she always remained a competent duelist.
One last thing for if Crow had been a Dark Signer - it would mean that everyone from Team Satisfaction/the Enforcers would have betrayed Yusei at some point.
I wouldn't say "betrayed" but Yusei would have been the only one not to be power hungry. Kalin became a dark signer for almost stabbing to death a police officer (due to his lust for more domination within Domino's gangs) and Jack abducted Rally to steal Stardust for fame and glory
You know what would have been nice?? Have Crow as the final dark signer against Yusei, Jack and Aki. Next an "Crow Redemption Arc" followed by an "Aki Arcadia Movement Closure Arc" followed by the "Rua Ruka Development Arc" THEN end with "Yliaster Arc"!!!! That would have been sooo much more awesome!!!! Oh well despite these forgotten storylines Yugioh 5Ds is still my absolute favorite so far :)
Sammy Dray They kept switching up writers at the time, and one of them didn't know how to write female characters properly either... but I would've totally liked this route minus Crow being redeemed... don't get me wrong it's not that I haven't hated Crow enough as it is wanting him to die even more... but from a plot pov it would've been much more meaningful and realistic if all the Dark Signers actually died... cus after all it's as Goodwin said, Dark Signers have already died and can't be brought back... therefore it's literally impossible to reverse death, b.c, well... ya know? They already died... but I actually like it that you try to stick to the premise as faithfully as possible in the direction that it was intended to go or just go through a different path to better the overall story as a whole and not try to incorporate random fanfic bs and nonsense as plot devices and crap.
I always liked Akiza far more than Crow. She was my favorite character in 5ds. That's why the season 3 opening worried me when there was so little of Akiza in it.
@@abzoluterennix477 Yeah, exactly! Just to advertise the Blackwings cards. They kicked Akiza off. It was obvious she was supposed to be there, not Crow ;-:
@@TheDarkNeos not really beacause blackwings only came out in raging battle witch only came out in may and those episodes only came out in june one month diffrence
I feel disappointed that Rally and his friends were completely tossed aside after the dark signer arc. After all, they were Yusei's closest friends before joining 5d's team. Or a least an episode where Yusei meet them again. Totally agree with the Arcadia arc. Seeing Divine vs Aki (alongside Misty being somehow brought back in the plot) would have been full circle.
I also like Tanner and Yanagi. They would have been fine characters to show up on occasions. Also, I find it weird as I don’t remember a single episode past season 2 that brought up the former social divide between Satellite and New Domino. I would have figured some elitists be shown on screen showing disdain for sharing the same city with people commonly thought of as trash.
@@ssjgotenks2009 That is no reason. Rally was a vital aid for Yusei (he gave him a Synchro card whom Yusei used against Trudge). You all forgot that before team 5d's, Rally & cie were his true friends, they all built Yusei's D wheel and junk deck together and the 5 stood together against social discrimination.
@@ssjgotenks2009 Don't tell me otherwise but I still find disrespectful that Yusei did not pay them a visit after the dark signers arc, no matter the hate Rally & cie received (which I find utterly undeserved by the way). Being grateful towards those who saved, took care, fostered, cheered you up is the least you can do.
@@DTran-je1sn Aside from Rally, they were just props used for dialogue and exposition. They never got much characterization or Decks of their own. They are literally the kind of characters thrown in Shonen anime so that the Mc doesn't look like a loser without friends. And personally, I think having Yusei only having Rally and Martha in those early episodes would've heightened how much Jack meant to Yusei, and how much his betrayal hurt.
Swordking X4 Simple. Cus of money. Komonai has a reputation for being a bunch of greedy mofos, and that is a fact. Just take a look at what they did to Kojima, if they can say goodbye to one of their best developers and strip his name off titles that he worked his butt off to make for the company then there's nothing Komonai wouldn't do.
@@Evil_Beauty Right but what does all that have to do with Aki's character? There's no reason Crow and Aki couldn't both be relevant. To some extent they did keep continue to expand upon her character but why put her in the back seat? Tournament could have been 4v4 which would have been more entertaining. I also don't think it was because of Blackfeathers, I think it was because Crow was too good to turn evil and kill off
Man all these plot lines had a lot of potential had they not been thrown away. I'm sure the second half of 5DS would have been better praised had they done MORE, instead of fillerish episodes. Still love 5DS though.
DetectiveDuelista Yeah that would be awesome. I do Not See why they could Not take both Story phats. They could make that after his defeat he is still around, maybe give him a aweking of psychic Power Like mind Reading and boom Season 3 Team 5ds vs The Psi cult + Crow as a member. It would be awesome. Then a 2 vs 2 Duel in the end (yusei + Aki vs Divine + Crow)
DetectiveDuelista Actually his role wasn't going to be intended as one of Yusei's childhood friends growing up. He was originally planned to be some kind of random recurring character trying to steal Yusei's D-Wheel, and then on from there ya know... dies and becomes a Dark Signer, etc etc. Dude the whole entire DS arc would've taken a different route had they just let him die...
The thought of Crow as a villain is a pretty unbelievable, though I will say that Aki could have and should have been given more duels and screen time, though I think she's the best female protagonist they've ever had.
People are so desperate for a female character to _finally_ get their due, people have already been calling Romin Kirishima "the best" despite only a dozen episodes, two duels and _one_ win. Here's hoping Bridge doesn't succumb to the tropes, or else we truly are doomed.
I feel like we should also count Z-one's backstory as an abandoned element. Early in the show, it was pretty clear that Zone and Bruno were Yusei's allies and enemies of Aporia. The show later retconned this to make everyone work for Zone. It's also really clear that Zone was supposed to be Yusei but the writers chickened out and made it a guy with plastic surgery
I got the same opinion dude, Aki is an amazing character in Yugioh 5Ds. I couldn't help but wonder throughout the show as to why she didn't appear as often as possible in the series, assessing on how reliable she could be.
Hopefully more of that will be touched next time Jack shows up again. Although it's really doubtful it'll happen in Vrains since it took about 3 series for him to show up again. lol
And this is why Jack was one of my favorites. he may have put on the mask of the king but underneath he was just a big awkward lovable nerd. Both tough and soft when it mattered most!
The final point makes me sad that ultimately this anime was nothing but business and because of that Crow shafted Aki as well as Rua. Rua was supposed to be the final signer but Crow took his place. Remember in Ruka's dream where all signer dragons were shown?? There is no Blackwing Dragon but Life Stream Dragon is there. This just shows how shoehorned Crow's "Signer Dragon" was in the show to make more money whereas Rua's awakening was pushed near the very end of 5Ds.... Same with Aki. She was supposed to be number 3 protag but nope!!!
Thats nice pal!! And I'm not saying Black WIngs are bad or anything!! Hell no!! They are popular for a reason. I just wish that business decisions like that didn't ruin some characters like that :)
I always got the Impression that Crow earned himself the title of a complete new signer and thats the reason why a dragon which was important to him became part of the crimson dragon. For me it was the same reason why bommer became a dark signer. The dark signer changed the rules when they got 7 instead of 5 dark signers and thats how the crimson dragon adapted to this situation.
@@TheDarkNeos Exactly because they keep making him lose. He lost to Divine, and Divine only ever dueled against Carly. And due to Carly not being a duelist, it'd be believable that she'd loose. But they kept writing Lua to lose over and over and over, so it's hard to even notice him as he only wins ONE 1 v 1 duel, which was against a filler character.
Other storylines that needs to be cleared: - what about the involvement of the Team Ragnarok, the Polar Gods and their Rune Eyes towards the Yliaster - I mean I find it weird that a Norse related characters will be involved in a war related to the Incan civilization. - Sherry Lebnac and how she was really got involved to Yliaster at some point not to mentioned the time Z-One giving her the Z-One card technically never explained how it really works. - Lastly how is Black Winged Dragon related to the Signer Dragon on the first place
The thing is the dark signers were not suppose to be awaken When the ener D reactor exploded and blast domino city This energy awaken them Yeah the norse gods being involve with this inca mythological war is a bit weird I mean jack had a rivalry with the guy who possess thor but on the other all They could have said oh we were in tournament and we also have powers since we are gifted by gods too But i guess that in the end It is normal that the norse gods will be involve Since The guy who wields odin can sense that something isn't normal The timeline is getting rewritten So either way the norse gods were involve Since it was going beyond that
One other dropped story that needs to be mentioned is Yusei's dad. Seasons 3 and 4 heavily hinted that he didn't die and that he was really trapped in the ener D reactor. But then s5 came along and they never even mentioned that
So do I!! The fact that the writers chose to throw their relationship out of the window as if they never had developed any feelings for each other wants me to trip headfirst into a volcano! It's 2020 and I'm still pissed how they screwed up the characters!
Aki was SUCH a good character when she first appeared. Like people were afraid of her, but then she turned into a Yusei fangirl in S2. Yugioh writers hate women.
Matt Shen the first step would be giving her a link 4 cyverse ace monster, the thing that I always disliked about the ace monsters in 5ds is that all men (including Leo who was only important at the very end) had level 8 aces while Aki and Luna for no reason had level 7 aces
Her character's already dead. From what I've seen her first lost was to the cotton candy haired boy and already she is on the wrong side being possessed... her pure soul is already corrupted. That alone already says much about the future of her character in later episodes as being the typical 'damsel in distress' fodder role... And OsTheBarbarian, Aki and Luca having level 7 dragons as their aces make sense b.c typically female dragons tend to be weaker than the males, well... from a realistic pov...
It’s a good thing fanfics exist so we can ”edit” 5D’s and make it better by adding some of the scrapped ideas. I did it in my fanfic, which is quite popular, by bringing the Arcadia Movement back, but called Neo Arcadia Movement instead. The whole 5D’s crew, Sector Security, and my original characters were involved, but Aki got to Duel Divine/Sayer in the end…and Divine was met by a tragic death due to a contract with the Darklords. Aki is my favorite female character in the whole franchise.
I love Aki, but I also like Crow and I feel like it is unfair to blame Crow for Aki's lack of screentime. There was enough time to give screentime to both characters, so there was probably other reasons. No reason to blame Crow. That being said, I always felt sad how bad the show treated Aki near the end. Noone near as bad as the other female leads (Noone can touch Yuzu and Asuka on that area) but still, it was unfair to such a great character. I am not even sure it is just the cult thing. Yugioh always had an issue with writing female characters. Idk what is so hard about it but the problem is always there. Hence why Aki is still the best one by far (not including Aoi since it is too early to tell), even with all the wasted potential. But even with all of that, I think 5Ds is the best Yugioh series. Yugioh 5ds is the only YGO series were I love all the main characters. Yusei, Aki, Crow, Jack, Rua, Ruka... They were all great characters and duelists.
Personally, I think Aki's character arc should've been much slower. She could've still had her brutal duel with Yusei and reconnect with her parents, but she should've been angrier and not as forgiving as she was. Knowing her history and having anger issues myself, trust me when I say that love doesn't make those feelings evaporate. She should've told them that she didn't forgive her parents for what they did, but that she was willing to try. Hell, realistically, she shouldn't have considered Yusei and the other signers as friends at that point. They were certainly meant to work together, but their marks and a few duels shouldn't have meant friendship. Don't get me wrong, I love Yusei & Aki, but real relationships like that take a lot of time for them to be meaningful. And more importantly, Aki should've had more time to gradually get over her anger issues over the coarse of the story. Maybe she could've added venting her rage in a non-destructive way as another motive to learn how to Turbo Duel. As for the other stuff, that could be attributed to completing her story arc too fast and typical Shonen Jump style. (I mean really, why is it so hard for Shonen to keep female leads interesting?)
@@quincyconnors9391 to awnser you aki should have been givin a longer character arc yes but more in the way of duels and the reason she came to love yusei cause that was sudden, further i have no problems with how she got close to the others cause its kinda understandabld. Yusei understood her pain and helped her and made her realise the things she should have like loving herself, further more she was not that friendly in the begining of dark signer arc she was talkitive but not close to the others except yusei she opened up too them more in season 2
I disagree, its because crows fault yes its the fault of blackswings popularity and since he used the deck they made him have more screentime, kinda bs cause its because of blackwings that they had to rearrange the storg and made it so aki did not get to be as heroic as in the first season.
I would have loved closure to the Arcadia Movement Arc and more Aki in general post season 2. However, I am glad the writers never assassinated her character. She always stayed true to who she was and never really stopped being a badass. For example, I loved how she told off those dudes at Duel Academy in the episode where she learns to Turbo-Duel. Her dueling skills stayed top-notch the entire show, too. I know a lot of people think the loose romance between her and Yusei made her character weaker, but I honestly thought the opposite. Given both characters' past learning to trust someone else and let them in is actually pretty great development for both of them. The way it progressed was pretty in-character for both of them. The only thing I didn't like about their interactions was the series finale, but Yugioh's never been good at giving their characters closure. IMO the problem with Aki post S2 (S3 and especially S4) was not the direction they took her character, but rather the fact that they just didn't write her character into enough episodes. There were plenty of interesting things they could have or were already doing with her (close the Arcadia Movement Arc, explore Turbo Dueling, flesh out her and Yusei's relationship, etc.). They just didn't; namely for two reasons: 1. The head writer after season 1 admitted he didn't know what to do with her character post S2 and wasn't good at writing strong female characters. 2. Crow stole Aki's spot as a main character hard after S2 due to "Buy More Blackwings". This decision sucked and especially hurt the WGRP arc which would have been much more interesting with Aki as one of the front runners. WRGP would have been a huge opportunity to explore how Aki's powers interacted with Turbo Dueling but instead all we got was the less-than-desirable Team Unicorn duel against Breo. Aki could have won that a ton of different ways (especially with Stardust Dragon available). All of that being said though, I think it still speaks volumes that even just based off of what we did get, Aki is still easily my favorite character in the entire Yu-Gi-Oh franchise. I just really, really wish the writers did more with her. Here's hoping they "Dark Side of Dimensions" 5Ds sometime in the future.
I'm really glad that you finally had the chance to upload this video! And it really just makes one think about what 5D's could've been. I don't think I'll ever be able to forget about Crow replacing Aki as the the third most important character. Seeing her in the WRGP more would've been really cool, we would've probably gotten a Black Rose upgrade as well. The fact that Crow became a signer also made them write in a new dragon. Which made Rua get his dragon later on, but also made Ruka's vision confusion, since it showed LifeStream Dragon. And if course, the title then made no sense; because there ended up being 6 signers and not 5. I agree wiht the list that you made, Dylan! Hearing about the "behind the scenes" is really interest, in my opinion!
Aki going up against Sayer is a storyline for Arc-V Tag Force Special, maybe this old abandoned storyline was thought of when she was added as a main character to the game.
Luke's Yu-Gi-Oh! Channel Most of the scrapped storylines that were leftover were added into that very game to patch up any plot holes so you're definitely not wrong in that.
Yugioh 5ds is the only YGO series were I love all the main characters. Yusei, Aki, Crow, Jack, Rua, Ruka... They were all great characters and duelists.
All of these forgotten plotlines in 5ds would have been amazing to explore in the show. I would have loved to see them all too. As much as I love Crow's character I love Aki more and really wish she got the spotlight rather then Crow. Such a shame since she had so much potential too. She is still my favorite lead female out of all the yugioh shows, although that could change for me depending on how Aoi's character is treated in vrains.
Agreed! She's my fav female but its like ughh she could have been INCREDIBLE xD Hoping Aoi passes her! Cause that means Aoi is going to be written really well
Midnight Lightstar I really hate the fact that they made Aki in the anime a weak minded character and spoiled brat... it really didn't do her justice and just simply draws people away from relating to her character on trivial level. They could've really done more with her character... At least they tone this down in the third season, yet at a cost...
Red I know, although i didn't feel as though her character became a spoiled brat. She was spoiled a bit but i didn't feel she became a brat from it, but that is just my opinion on it. Aki had so much to offer to the series. The female characters in Yu-Gi-Oh series are treated so unfairly and terrible. I loved her character and still do love her so much i just didn't like the treatment she was given. The dark signers will always be my favorite arc in 5ds because Aki's character.
I personally find it lame when writers of any artistic media let themselves get censored by current events, forcing them to write inferior works. I understand it from a business perspective, but I hate the very idea of it. On a sidenote, I really think you should not mention Sekirei when you're trying to say something good about woman in anime. You'd be much better off just naming something like Claymore.
Okay but they totally could have done Crow as the final Dark Signer AND still wrote him in as a major character later on. They've done that before. Kaito was a major antagonist in ZeXal but then became one of the major characters of the latter half of the show. Ryuji/Duke Devlin was an antagonist and then became a recurring character. Shun was basically a villain during his introduction and was openly antagonistic towards Yuuya in the beginning, yet became one of Yuuya's most trusted comrades later on in the season. Even characters like Pegasus and Marik were major antagonists and then became friendly characters later on in the series. Granted, they weren't ever as big as Crow but it can be done! I actually think it would have been really cool to have him been the final antagonist of the Dark Signers arc, and then after he was defeated, have him been rehabilitated, kind of like Kyousuke, how he had that redemption arc in Crash Town. And like, that still would have been good for Blackwings cuz like, well just give dark signer!Crow some evil blackwings and fucking boom, instant hit.
You know its ironic when Carly was first introduced my initial thoughts were something along the lines of "Wow her glasses look odd", then after a few episodes I shifted to "Okay shes a lil annoying but doing her job I guess I can forgive her for that", then when she "died" and became a Dark Signer I dont know what it was her design her dueling style her Immortal her new attitude but my opinion of her completely shifted almost instantaneously suddenly I found myself super invested in hoping she would be saved, then at the end of it all her personality largely died, but for me I'll never forget her in that ark and the final duel between Jack and her and the tears that fell afterwards I was so emotionally damaged it took months for me to continue the show.
What a cult does to a series... an Aki arc and a romance we lost because of that -.- The Crow part: It's quite hard to imagine how would they have done it to make Crow fit as the final Dark Signer. We really don't have that many hints in the show about that: only when the fog appeared and for 4-5 episodes we thought he was swallowed by that and the change of personality of Godwin in that episodes (at least for me, it seemed that, in that part of the show, he was only gathering the signers and he acted like a supportive character giving various info about the dark signer - yes, he still has the wiraqocha rasca god in his clothes, but I got that impression the last time I watched the show - I'm probably wrong, but still...). Great vid as always!
Thanks Jose! Yeah I wonder when they decided to scrap the original idea for Crow to become a Dark Signer? Would be awesome to know the exact moment he would have had that "I'm the villain" moment
Just b4 team 5ds had a practice fight with team unicorn. They hinted that tetsu trudge was going to be in the last tournament. Trudge said "I can't wait to fight them again." And akiza or someone said "are u planning on being in the tournament." Trudge replied "that's a secret." Wonder what happened with that story?
I did feel kind of dickish making the thumbnail, cause I HATE clickbait, but I mean she was a pretty big role in the video so it's kind of minor clickbait xD
I wished Aki had more spotlight throughout 5DS and after. I've always loved Aki during and after the Arcadia Movement. And she had her own moment when she started to be a Speed Duelist. But alast, she was casted as a side character
This makes me question my love for 5d's and makes me hate Konami even more. I love 5d's but there's a lot of lost/wasted potential and there's so much left untouched. I guess we have fanfiction to start writing.
This makes me so sad for Aki... Honestly, she's my favorite character from all the franchise at this point (just started Zexal), and I doubt that'll change. Her introduction is totally incredible, and her duels with Yusei are absolutely heart-stopping, especially the first. I love the character development she got during the DS arc. Her moments give me chills - and the emotional ones, like her backstory and her reuniting with her parents, made me bawl. I'm forever mad at the way the writers threw her aside because of the cult bs and Crow's suffocating popularity. She's very unique for a lot of reasons, and it's an absolute shame the way the show didn't give her the limelight they should've. Though I do really like her desire to join the team for the tournament - watching her determination to learn how to become a riding duelist was inspiring, but she didn't get much after that. Aside from the duel with Crow against Sherry, which was really cool, and resulted in a great development for her (realizing she can use her powers for healing and protecting, and that that is what she wants to do). Hearing the original plans for her makes me want to read some sort of fix fic for her, where at the very least she DOES get to take down Sayer and Arcadia herself. Does anyone know of any???? I'm dying to read something along the lines.
Don't blame Crow, he's only a popular character who replaced her because Akiza's voice actress became less involved with the show. It' was the best decison they could've made without making people angry.
(writing this before watching the video) I love 5d's, it's probably my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh Spinoff but I always felt liked the show lost a lot of it's potential in regards of the story arc -) Sayer was a really fascinating Villain and he would have definetely been a good antangonist for a huge story arc. For example: He builts an army of Psychic Duelists and manages to get Akiza under his control again -) Jack turning into a bad guy: He was more like an enemy in the Manga and It would have made sense that after all the duels with Yusei he became frustrated and hate became the better of him. -) A good tournament arc like in the manga -) Anything with Kalin Kessler, I would have really loved to see more of him and the Infernity monsters -) More duels or an entire arc with Greiger/Boomer, always liked his agressive dueling style
Thanks for the Reply! Good to see you back and the Video was great as always, I really appreaciate all the time and work you put into these videos. I hope your fine man (: Keep the good work up!
The last Earthbound Immortal was a type of bird, so it would've fit aesthetically well enough into Crow's Blackwings. Carly and Kalin come back, so Crow could've died mid Dark Signer arc like Carly did, become the last Dark Signer, then been restored after the "final fight". That way Aki could've remained relevant for at least a bit longer, we'd've seen dark signer crow, and he'd still be around later. Could've kep Goodwin up their sleeves as a mid-boss during the lead-up to the Meklords.
Stoked to see you making videos again after that copyright disaster. Keep up the great work! Your list is excellent...and I actually kinda wish they didn't use Crow in ARC-V, I'm not even sure why but he didn't feel like the same character to me while the others (except Asuka obviously) did so pretty easily.
Hell Sly would've been an Antagonist to Leo hell Leo could've gotten his mark and Life Stream Dragon trying to get Yusei's Stardust Dragon back As for the Arcadia Movement I feel its backstory would've been an organization made by Jaden Yuki sometime after GX since in the end of S4 he said he was gonna find duelists with abilities like him and sincerely help which i believe to cope with their abilities to connect to the Duel Monsters Spirit World so they can lead normal lives but over time the head of the group changed to the point they became ambitious
Even though Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's is my favourite series currently, this series is perhaps the most unluckily and screwed over thus far. The only Yu-Gi-Oh! series I can think of that got screwed over similarly like 5D's was Arc-V (mainly the last 30 episodes or so and that terrible ending). Anyway, I totally forgot the Sly character until this video reminded me how strange that character and the plot hole surrounded him was. The Jack and Carly romance was also odd since it was really going somewhere and then the sub plot just fell off a cliff, never to be touch again. The Yliaster storyline was all over the place as to who they are which I remember really confused the heck out of me. I was disappointing that the Arcadia movement got shafted and their storyline got completed removed since I like those guys and would make some great villains later on and with Crow being turned into a Dark Signer. That would be really cool to see but...... Curse You Blackwings! And lastly for Aki/Akiza, she may be my favourite female character in the whole Yu-Gi-Oh! series but poor Aki/Akiza. She's had a great start and an alright finish but she's probably the character that got screwed the most in this series.
To be honest, it didn’t make sense to me that crow was the one to battle against Goodwin with Yusei and jack because he wasn’t a signer and at that time, didn’t rly play any major role.
Well, he was the only other person there with a Duel Runner, aside from Trudge (I think). Even then, I guess there's no reason why they wouldn't let her use one of theirs to duel in their place, or maybe just have one of them do the driving and her do the dueling behind them as a Signer. This also could've potentially acted as part of her motivation to learn how to Turbo Duel on her own later on in the show.
When I watched 5Ds for the 1st time I hoped that Sly had some connection to Divine/Sayer and he would do some dirty deeds as a minor antagonist for Leo
Well I am glad we got the Timelord archetype out of the changes. Personally, while the Ilyaster direction definetely changed, I still think they acted "Secret Society" like throughout episodes 65 - 110. The storyline I have would have loved to see expanded upon, Luca and the Duel monster spirit world. They could have done so much more with it. Luca only dueling three times during the entire show and only once by herself, is by far the biggest disappointment for me in 5D's (still my favorite of the Yu-gi-oh shows though)
Yliaster VS a Dark Signer - Meklord Emperor VS Earthbound Immortal. I remember reading that could have also happened, Jose resigned from his post and the above duel happened?
I remember reading that Aki's voice actor asked for lesser workload since she was about to get married in real life, or something, so that also minorized her role in the series...
Although I dont like blackwings that much, Im happy Crow wasnt the last signer, he was an amazing character and I loved his duel against Griger, both of them fighting for the children they cared about, also I think Goodwin got a satisfying end that way
Very nice video, Dylan! Didn't Aki also got tossed aside from the spotlight, because her VA became pregnant during the run of 5Ds? I personally think, that the choice of the legacy characters in Arc V was also dependent of the availability of the VAs.
Whitedouble Yes! She did, but that's only part of the reason. I also read somewhere on that but forgot the link... I think it was stated on ygo 5D's trope page.
Dylan, you haven't made any episode reviews or forgotten storylines in more than a year. The fans want them, man. Those are some of the most unique top lists.
So many missed opportunities, while I am a huge fan of Blackwings, I still found that Aki had immense potential as a character, but being shafted the way she was, is the true crime of 5Ds, and behind that was Illiaster. Aki was a prime example of wasted opportunity, because if they managed to better portray her character, it would likely have changed the way they wrote their female characters in the future. Female characters such as Tori, Yuzu or even Celina could have been better written and played a more prominent role after a certain point in their sagas. But alas, wasted potential can never be fixed, unless there is fanfiction.
It _can_ at least be amended, should they care enough to bring a past element back up. Considering what was prioritized in Arc-V(a) tho, the only spin-off to meaningfully do so...yeah, not in this lifetime.
Amazing video Dylan. It really was worth the insanely long wait. And as a die hard 5Ds fan by myself, I cannot agree more with your points. Yes, sadly 5Ds had one too many forgotten and scrapped storylines, and yes, it could had been so much better (or worse, depending on how those forgotten storylines had turned out if they would a actually included in the serie). But to be honest, the series did turn out to be really great in the end even with all of the changes. And that is the most important thing. It's just like looking at a great classic hollywood classic film, and then looking up what the directors originally wanted to do with it.
I didn’t think the whole Jack Carly romance was the best even of 5d’s. I will agree Akiza got shafted with no Arcadia movement and she was changed after season one. I think she should’ve gotten that arc but I will say I thought the akiza and yusei what about the best we ever got or a romance I mean it was pretty much confirmed At least in my eyes
The fact that Aki has always been my favorite character and I have always been disappointed of how much she was neglected although she had a great strong personality and IS possibly the most liked female protagonist of all yugiohs and then I learn how that she had so much potential if it wasn't for the cult situation and crow..... I love crow but man... imagine how great it would have been
Great video Dylan, I'm glad you finally got to upload this. I actually forgot all about the sly kid. It's too bad that 5ds had so many changes and forgotten storylines. If things had not changed 5ds could've been the best series.
I was fortunate enough to come across your channel a while ago, and this video convince me to finally subscribe :). As a fan of Yugioh, I was always frustrated with the forgotten characters and story-lines. I'm so happy someone talked about the #3 Yilaster storyline. I always wanted closure to who that unnamed Yilaster member was (his picture is shown at 6:32), since he set the 5D plot into motion. A small part of me hoped he would show up in another Yugioh series as part of some overarching plot. But now I understand the writers probably just removed him from the series because of the cult issue in Japan as well as executive meddling. As for the others: #5: didn't know that character existed outside of the 3rd opening lol, I skipped many of the filler episodes. #4: I agree Yugioh writers can't do romance right. #2: When I first watched this group, I thought they would be major antagonists. But nope. Honestly, an Arcadia Arc would've been great for Aki's character development as opposed to those filler episodes after the Dark Signers Arc. One of the things that keeps 5D from being my favorite Yugioh series (don't really have one when I think about it) is how they wasted Aki's character. #1: I actually learned about Crow from Clueless Gamer's video on things you don't about 5D. Yeah, Crow is a forgettable character in my opinion, and I wish he didn't take so much of the spotlight from Aki. One other thing I wanted to know was the specific origins of the machines that destroyed the Future Earth Z-one and Aproria came from. Other than that, sorry for the long comment and thanks for the great video. I'm looking forward to the others.
Thanks for talking about all the controversy that was Behind 5D's in real life (i have heard that in fact, that extended to the dub, where the studio that was dubbing the series went out of business, so the dub was cut short). MANY of this series had potential. and is surprising (something of admiration) that even t their worst, 5D's was still a very good series (i need to watch it, i finished only up to the dak signers saga, and i have to rewatch that again, in latin americandub or not). I wonder how it would have been handled had, despite the controversy, the had a back up plan, in case the series is continued. Also, about the dropped plots 5°= That would have bee a nice filler arc 2°, 3°, AND 4° were dropped ALL due to the cult controversy in real life.(And about the romance part, that affects even the other popular pairing of yuseixAkiza, which has hinted even during the Dark Signers arc) 1°= Had Crow remained a Dark Signer, AND THEN redeeming himself while leaving Akiza/Aki as an important character, It would have turned Crow into pretty much Yu-Gi-Oh's Darth Vader/Vegeta (If Kaiba isn't that already), and probably made him EVEN MORE POPULAR. Poor Aki. Had that controversy of the cult never ocurred (and the writers had gotten more savvy about Crow's character)
I remember that episode! That was weird because why would Sly thought about stealing Stardust Dragon when we never see him doing it? I would be fine with him saying Yusei is an awesome duelist. He does look like a little Sayer or a little brother though. The love between Jack and Carly was sadly removed. You were so close writers, so close. Is Iliaster time travelers or a mysterious cult or both? We will never know. The Arcadia Movement could have so much potential in the later seasons, and Aki would have been a badass female protagonist dueling Sayer. Imagine everything would have changed if Crow was Dark Signer? That cult really screwed up Aki and the plot real quick, but The Black Rose Witch is still bae. An amazing video Dylan, can't wait to see more with the other Yu-Gi-Oh shows! ^-^
Did you know that Tag Force Special closes the Arcadia Movement storyline? If your partner with Aki, it ends with the revelation that Divine is still alive and has been throwing psychic-empowered brainwashed duelists against Aki. When she refuses to join him again Divine duels her (and the protagonist). After been defeated, Yugi & Co. appear and try to aprehend Divine, but he chooses to commit suicide by collapsing a whole building over him. In the end, Aki feels she can finally move forward.
I think the writers were probably thinking of having Sly be related to Sayer, and perhaps have Sly go after Yusei's Stardust Dragon as a way to avenge Sayer's death. I say this because Sly and Sayer have similar face designs e.g., eyes and hair styles. Given that Sayer died in the Dark Signers arc and Sly was introduced relatively short following Sayer's death, I can't stop but think their possible connection.
God this video was so good. I really had no idea about Crow to be supposed to act as the a main antagonist in the dark signer arc. Does that mean that when Crow first appear in 5D's he was still supposed to a villain, before the writers changed it? Whenever I look at Crow, he's such a sweet character that I could neve imagine him being a villain XD So yeah, you're right, things would have been veeeeeeery diferent, especially on 5D's if that happened. I wonder what they would have picked as a reason for Crow to be an antagonist. I want to know now!
Yeah, IMO the quality of YGO animes is almost always challenged in the 2nd or 3rd arc. Because in the end, it is an advertisement for selling the irl cards. The plot of 5D's is indeed a mess, but the characters are likeable though. It's just that they didn't maximize their character development, just like you said. I was hoping that Crow will get a new Black-Winged Dragon in Arc-V (with decent effects, because the anime and manga version are super ass. We never see them get played.). Too bad it didn't happen. And where's my water-attribute signer dragon? Konami breaks patterns as usual.
Great to see you back man! I was wondering if you would do this video like you mentioned a while back on Twitter and I'm just so glad you did! One thing though, isn't the reason why the love between Jack and Carly never got expanded upon is because of the very same reason for forgotten stories 3 & 2 because her voice actress was in a cult? I believe you said this a while back when you did your other video on things you didn't know about yugioh 5ds. Also, I was hoping you would do an honorable mention before number one and I think Aki never really having more turbo duels after the duel with team unicorn is another story that was forgotten about. I can't be only one who thinks that lol it's even on the thumbnail XD
#FreeMyBaeStorylines Also Yusei was badass, SYNCHRO SHOKKAN, APPEAR STARDUST DRAGON. Attack shooting sonic (or cosmic flare if you're a filthy dub watcher ;p)
I would've been happier if crow was that dark signer don't get me wrong I like him but I also think it would've been better to keep aki as the third main character even more
I really wish we did get more of these story possibilities, especially Aki dealing with the remnants of the Arcadia movement alongside her friends after the Dark Signer Arc and Crow being the final boss as his deck would have been perfect for Godwin’s Earthbound Immortal as his boss monster. Maybe even show a redemption arc for Crow to gain his Black Winged Dragon and become a signer for it after the Dark Signer Arc ends too! I also wish we got more on Yusei and Akiza, as well as Jack and Carly romances being made canon, I mean come on! It was plain as day for everyone to see!
The Buy Blackwings thing has been disproven. Currently, our best guess is that the show-runner really liked Crow and is responsible for changing the plot to increase his importance.
So Leo my second favorite 5Ds character in favor of Blackwings and Crow. As much I liked 5Ds I cannot forgive that one dimensional, annoying, bland poorly written dipshit for shafting Leo and he's potential. Crow and Blackwings killed 5Ds season 2 for me.
Crow being a possible dark signer is actually debunked. If I had to guess why the show in the second half got so much worse, its solely because of the writers and animators getting fired/replaced. I would have loved to see more of Sayer and the Arcadia Movement being the main villain of the show and getting as far as unleashing an army of psychic duelists on the world. Aki defeating Sayer would have made it an amazing finale for her character arc.
