In this video, I delve into the controversial topic of whether Yue Fei, the famous Chinese general, was wrongfully executed. Yue Fei is a revered figure in Chinese history, known for his military prowess and loyalty to the Song dynasty. However, his execution at the hands of his own government has sparked debate and speculation for centuries. Through historical accounts and analysis, I aim to shed light on this complex issue and offer my own perspective on whether Yue Fei was a victim of political intrigue or a legitimate threat to the state. Join me as we explore the fascinating story of Yue Fei and the enduring legacy of his life and death.
More information about Yue Fei:
Yue Fei is a pivotal figure in Chinese history, particularly during the Song dynasty (960-1279). He was a renowned general who fought against the invading forces of the Jin dynasty and helped to defend the southern Song dynasty. Yue Fei's military campaigns were instrumental in protecting the sovereignty of the Song dynasty and preserving its cultural heritage.
In addition to his military achievements, Yue Fei is also known for his loyalty to the state, his adherence to Confucian principles, and his unwavering commitment to duty. These qualities have made him a symbol of patriotism and national pride in Chinese culture.
Yue Fei's execution by his own government has also become a significant event in Chinese history and has generated much debate and discussion. Some believe that his death was the result of political intrigue and corruption within the Song court, while others argue that he was a legitimate threat to the state and was punished accordingly.
Overall, Yue Fei's life and legacy continue to resonate with the Chinese people, and his story serves as a reminder of the importance of loyalty, duty, and sacrifice in the face of adversity.

I disagree with your narrative. Just because someone convicts you of a crime, that does not means it is legally justified. The law is to uphold justice. During Yue Fei’s service, Jin did not manage to invade further. If Yue Fei fail his mission then he should be given rewards at the end. If Yue Fei is guilty of not acting to the Emperor’s commands, he would be punished then but to wait until he was given the Vice Prime Minister’s rank and change his status from witness to suspect where the original charge was dropped is suspicious. Yue Fei did what a loyal Song patriot will do and they executed him for it. He became a vegetarian and share similar ration with his soldiers plus relinquished his military tally when requested to return to Court. That is not a sign of a power hungry general. It is like working under a corrupted boss who is threatened by an employee who is doing what is right for the company but not him. Song Kingdom has more soldiers and resources than Jin at one point but lost due to poor leadership and corruption. I am from the legal world and this is not legally justified. There had been many cases in history of ppl getting convicted on charges that had no basis just based on technicalities and excuses.

Thank you for your comment. Honestly, I agree that the charges against Yue Fei were unjustified. The real reason behind it was that Emperor Gaozong of Song did not want to launch a northern campaign, so he had to find a reason to execute Yue Fei. I also have great respect for Yue Fei. He was a national hero and made significant contributions to the country. However, from the perspective of Emperor Gaozong, he was a criminal because his northern campaign did not serve the emperor's interests.

@@hochiwa Thank you as well. I think everyone can discuss things respectfully on YT without calling names etc. I would still hold the opinion that it is not right to say it is legally justifiable; as you say it is more what the Emperor want the outcome and how he can get there by whatever means. In a way like many ppl I’m saddened when I think about Song Dynasty and how many heroes sacrificed their lives and lineage like Yang family and Yue Fei defending Song while incompetent ppl in power continued to destroy the Empire. It is not too different with what is happening in today’s world like healthcare (I am also in that industry). Doctors and nurses around the world are struggling to care for patients with problems brought on by politicians in NZ, UK, Canada and USA but none of these politicians and leaders will admit they were wrong and accept responsibility.

if due Fei wiped out the great jin, song would become the most powerful Chinese dynasty ever until that time. Genghis Khan might not find it so easy to fight a unified Song Dynasty with perhaps a million troops.

@@hochiwa That's a rather narrow perspective. He disobeyed Gao zong because Qin Hui (Peace faction), kept feeding misinformation about Yue Fei, just to stop him from reclaiming the lands. The emperor was only a kid back then, he couldn't have made macro-perspective decisions which led to the demise of Yue Fei. Was Yue Fei wrongfully executed? Hell yeah, his intention never changed. He only seeked to reclaim all the lost lands of Song and doing it in the most ethical sense. The only person stopping him was the naive king and his cunning aide Qin Hui. Which after Yue Fei's death and the invasion of Jin, did he realise Yue Fei was right. After his step-son took over the throne, he restored Yue Fei's glory and gave back the titles and treasures to Yue Fei's aides and other fellow war veterans so that they would continue protecting the borders. I'm sorry but the title is misleading at best. Please reamend the title according to the accurate history. These people took effort to fact check and cross examine to try and create an impartial POV. Most of your audience probably won't know much about Yue Fei's history, so this is very misleading for them when you cherry pick certain information without context.

Yue Fei should have revised history for some suggestions 1) he has wayyyyy too much power, 2/3 of the countries military in his hands, he should learn from Wan Jian. Keep all his family in the capital, so emperor knows he has no thoughts of rebelling. 2) learn from Taizong emperor, instruct the emperor that by rescuing previous emperor, gaozong becomes a national hero, with brave name throughout history. As far as political power, military and government officials all listen to him, when the prisoner emperor comes back, grant him the title Tai Shang Huang, Tai Above Emperor, simply a title that allows the ex emperor to live in luxury while holding no political power.

The only reason why he was executed was because he was more famous & more respected than the emperor.

This is also one of the reasons why many famous ministers or generals were killed by the emperor. In China, we have an idiom called "功高震主", which means likely that.

as someone who works for the emperor, the main job is to keep the emperor happy( the emperor simply wants to defend his land), not to go offense and get back previous emperor. he is directly challenging the power of emperor by doing that. Also at one point he was holding 2/3 of song dynasty military. One day QinHui warned him, with the military talent of yue Fei and all those troops, if he rebel who can stop him?

Do you know why YOU CHAR KUEY was make? and what it's represent?
@hochiwa
@hochiwa Год назад
YOU CHAR KUEY is a type of Chinese food that used to be called "oil-fried Qin Gui" in Chinese. In Chinese, the words "oil" pronounce "YOU", "fried" pronounce "CHAR", and "Gui" and "KUEY" have similar pronunciations. During the Southern Song Dynasty in China, Qin Hui was responsible for the execution of Yue Fei. According to legend, a pastry shop in Lin'an, the capital city, was outraged upon hearing the news and created pastries with the faces of Qin Hui and his wife Wang on them. They stuck two pieces of pastry with different facial designs together and fried them in hot oil.

Giving this a thumbs down. Do you have the "Fifteen letters" written to General Yue? He is a famous hero and this is the first I've heard of this. Politics in the court was way more devious than you give credit for. AND I find it hard to take Chinese history from someone who can't even pronounce the words correctly 👎👎
@dquan731
@dquan731 Год назад
Agreed. This analysis was baloney. He left out so much. From all the legend I know, Yue Fei was steadfastly loyal to Song. His goal to invade Jin and rescue the old emperors and this was the sole reason for his death. The existing emperor could not tolerate this and made up any excuse to execute him. And regarding the 15 letters, I thought those were sent to demand be return to the capital and stop his northern expedition? The emperor was afraid that he was too good and might succeed. Yue Fei reluctantly agreed after receiving so many summons, which made him a prisoner and later executed. Also, regarding recommendations for heirs. It was not illegal for military officials to make recommendations. Might have been unusual, but that does not make it illegal.
@hochiwa
@hochiwa Год назад
Are you referring to the 15 letters that Emperor Gaozong of Song wrote to Yue Fei? I have read them, but Yue Fei was not able to accomplish the military orders that Emperor Gaozong gave him in the letters. Regardless of the reasons, Yue Fei objectively did not carry out the military orders given by Emperor Gaozong in the letters, and therefore the charge of delaying the military order is valid. However, whether or not this charge is reasonable is another matter. I also admire Yue Fei and consider him a hero, but legally he was indeed guilty, while emotionally I believe he was a good general who served his country and his people. As for the pronunciation, thank you for your feedback. As an AI-generated voice, some Chinese pinyin may not be pronounced correctly, but I will strive to improve. Thank you!
@hochiwa
@hochiwa Год назад
Thank you for your opinion. I agree that the emperor used an excuse to have Yue Fei killed, but that excuse was a charge that Yue Fei could not refute. From the perspective of the law at that time, Yue Fei did delay the military orders and that was a capital offense. However, whether or not it was reasonable is another matter.

I think you’re confused over your own premise. First, you bent over backward to prove, unsuccessfully, I may add, that Yue Fei was guilty as charged. Then, you undermined your own theory by saying that the real reason was his insistence on continuing his campaign, which was going well, to take back all territories that had been captured by the Jin dynasty, including the former capital. This ran contrary to the traitorous Prime Minister’s wishes as he had already sold out to the Jin over bribes and empty promises. This reason is accepted by most historians. So, if you don’t buy even your own premise, why have the video in the first place?
