Yugi Muto was the King Of The Games for a reason, as not only was he a tactical genius, he held a special bond with his cards that allowed him to bring out the latent potential hiding in even the weakest of monsters.
This fact was even highlighted by Yugi’s use of Kuriboh, a monster so puny that most opponent’s laughed when he brought it to the field, but even when compared to his favorite furball, Yugi played a ton of terrible cards.
So today we’re looking at the ten worst cards in Yugi’s deck, how he managed to bring out their potential, and why duelists in the TCG have struggled to do the same.

Now konami have to work with a mangaka that doesn't have any experience in game design for probably 3 years and result speak for itself, back to back tier 0 exodia ftk Canon soldier ftk, etc. He is a great mangaka for his time period, but my god his card design is genuinely feels like someone who hasn't card games at slightly competitive level.

The Card of Sanctity nerf was insane. All they had to do was make it Quick Play, require it to be used at the beginning of your opponent's turn, and require that your opponent have an equal or less amount of cards than you in their hand. It still kind of ruins it's comeback potential, but at least the effect is INTACT.

Agreed. There were so much better ways to nerf Card of Sanctity. Even something like "You can only use this Card at the Start of your Main Phase 1" might actually be enough. And no other Draws or Searching for the Rest of this turn of course.

Looking at it now, the anime version aged like spoiled milk when the draw effect can potentially ruin your game if your opponent ends up drawing an out to that comeback. Especially with a lot of hand traps these days, it's more of die less or die more card now.

@supersmily5811 6 месяцев назад

@supersmily5811 having to rely on your opponent and their resource use reeks of dead card in hand. Because the only benefit you can get that is if your opponent has a full hand EVERY time. Which is borderline impossible unless you help him get there. Even if you ignore the risks of giving your opponent one free draw, it's still risky because of hand traps running rampant. Card can simply screw you over because you give your opponent a free draw to a nibiru or ash blossom.

Cards like Pot of Greed and Card of Sanctity exist to keep a good pacing in the anime. A lot of cards from the early anime were printed verbatim, and it was learned later how busted they can be. This list really makes it clear how different the anime's card summoning mechanic was. If you ever met the conditions for a card, you just GOT IT. It didn't need to be in your deck or planned for it. My only guess on Grampa playing Battle Steer in his deck was because I think the average duelist at the time played like Joey did in his very first duel with Yugi when he played nothing but weak vanilla monsters and Steer would be able to easily crush that deck. I think cards like Summon Skull, Gaia and such were much much harder to come by, almost as if the level of a monster was more like it’s rarity in the show if that makes sense. I think my favorite thing about Card of Sanctity is that Konami could've just let you draw three cards and let you have +1 for a tough cost (like a 'balanced' Pot of Greed), but the anime version was such taboo that they felt like ensuring there was nothing positive to using it.

Honestly? COS isn’t even that broken if you think about it. BOTH players draw until they have a full hand. It gives your opponent more interaction, but also YOU. You could only use it once per turn. And if we’re worried about it, it’s laughably easy to counter with a single Ash. The anime version could come to the Tcg and be overplayed, but it wouldn’t be as bad as pot of greed. There are worse to see advantage generation cards is my point.

@@NexeL_NKCyou forget that most people on turn 1 dump most their cards into a heavy combo, and you opponent uses 1/2 hand traps tops. You draw 4-6 cards, your opponent draws 1-3. That’s card neutral in a worst case scenario, or even a +3 if your opponent has no hand traps.

Speaking of Dark Sage I really wish we would get full archetype that's dedicated to the rare effect of cards summoning themselves from deck under certain conditions. The closest we have to that is the Possessed cards of the Charmers (Awakening of the Possessed and Familiar-Possessed); aside from those the only cards with that effect are Dark Sage, Metalzoa & Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon (which both require Metalmorph) and Theinen the Great Sphinx (which requires both Andro Sphinx and Sphinx Teleia to be destroyed at the same time).

Fun fact. The duelist kingdom arc of the anime is explicitly stated to have special, new rules created by Pegasus to make the tournament more interesting. So instances like the moon interacting with Mako's ocean field, are actually new rules they had to figure out as they played. Except Weevil, who stole the rules beforehand, but he got eliminated immediately anyway. So that arc isn't just randomly making up bullshit, it's manufactured entertainment for Pegasus. The ones who take most advantage of these odd interactions, all work for Pegasus as well. It actually makes Yugi and Joey, kinda brilliant for recognizing the added realism to various cards on the fly.

12:30 Battle Steer is actually not terrible in some of the old video games that had strict deck cost requirements and generally very weak monsters. Because it required a tribute, it generally had a pretty low deck cost so you could slot it in as a garnet to be able to play a more powerful card that had a higher deck cost. 18:07 Speaking of cards that are much better in those types of games, Mirage Knight and Dark Flare Knight are insane in Sacred Cards and Resheff of Destruction because you can just summon them. In fact, Mirage Knight makes it so you don't even have to play Dark Flare Knight, and Dark Flare Knight does the same with Flame Swordsman and Dark Magician in those games because summons them from outside of the deck, giving you a ton of card advantage and allowing you to play some really high deck cost monsters without actually having to commit slots in the deck to them.

Dark Flare Knight is the best monster in the game Reshef of Destruction (GBA). It is an effect monster as there is no fusion deck in that game. It summons a Mirage Knight out of nowhere (you don't need to have that card in your deck) when Dark Flare Knight goes to the graveyard, even when discarded. (In that game you can discard as many cards as you want during your turn.) You get a big 2800 Atk monster on the field. And then, it itself summons Dark Magician and Flame Swordsman, still out of nowhere. And Dark Magician is very strong since gets +30% Atk under Yami, so 3250 Atk. That's a benchmark against postgame opponents cause they all have x3 Change of Heart.

Brain Control is even more busted in the anime because it literally had no LP cost. It was control a monster for free. The 800 LP cost came later. Edit: On Dark Sage, he wasn't a summons in the anime. He was an effect of the Dark Magician aging. So it was a counter-measure if someone uses Time Wizard and gets its effect off. Not a card that Yugi had to tech in. Same with the other Fusion monsters in early Yugioh, which was how Kaiba created Ultimate-Blue Eyes.

They need to make a card like "Eye of Timaeus" that would let you special summon anything that required "Dark Magician" on the field while ignoring their summon conditions (Maybe using him as tribute) and/or allows you to preform an extra normal/special summon for anything that mentions him for those that need to be normal summoned to activate their effects; to actually warrant the "once per turn" clauses on those like "Rod".

@aereon_gaming
@aereon_gaming 6 месяцев назад
The ruling with Fusion Substitutes is that you can only use them for named materials, and only for one of the named materials. So using Flame Swordsman as an example, if you use a Fusion Substitute as one of the materials, you still are required to play one of the other materials to summon it, and both materials are terrible low stat monsters with no effects. The materials for a fusion are just as important as the effects of the fusion itself in terms of how viable it is.
@shootingstarships
@shootingstarships 6 месяцев назад
@areon_gaming While I agree and I've been playing Yugioh since goat and edison era, I like to point out the Cards like King of the swamp are good fusion substitutes. For instance, IT can search poly if you discard from hand, and I find it good for cards like Dragon Master Knight and Shining Flare Wingman, to replace the fusion monsters that need to be used for material. It's in no way, optimal, but it is better than going into it naturally. Dark Flare Knight would also benefit from cards like King of the Swamp. Replace Flame Swordsman with FS (Fusion Substitute cards). For Ultimate Dragon or Black Luster Soldier in Dragon Master Knight. Even Flame Winged Man in Shining Flare Winged Man. I don't it is bad to assume or reasonable to say the fusion substitutes cards are great or terrible. I just feel like that they are constantly overlooked by man yugitubers. But those are my thoughts. But do appreciate your thoughts on the matter and I respect your take as well. 😆

This really stapled well with snatch steal (equip this card to a monster on the opponent's side of the field and gain control of that monster. 17:41 I have THIS here, a retrain for this card in the same vein as Blue Flame Swordsman: _Blue Flare Dark Knight_ (DARK) Level 6 Warrior/Fusion/Effect “Blue Flame Swordsman” + 1 “Dark Magician” monster _This card is always also FIRE-Attribute. You take no battle damage from battles involving this card. If you would take any effect damage, you can lower this cards ATK or DEF (Your choice) by an equal amount instead. If this card’s ATK or DEF become 0 by this effect, banish it. This card gains ATK/DEF equal to any battle/effect damage you inflict on your opponent. If your opponent destroys this card by battle or card effect, or if this card is banished by its own effect(s): You can special summon 1 level 8 monster from your hand, deck or GY, ignoring its summoning conditions, but it’s banished at the end of the turn._ ATK/2200 DEF/800 Basically, it builds off of the “no battle damage” bit, providing some protections against effect damage while allowing it to replenish itself off of any damage YOU inflict to your,opponent, AND as a bonus it basically lets you turn ANY level 8 from your hand, deck or GY into a Mirage Knight.

Honestly, to give mystical moon some credit, I did a little bit of limited pack Legend of Blue Eyes only format a couple of months ago, and in that format, they're pretty good. 1 tribute monsters in that format are really weak. Some level 4 monsters come really close to beating over all 1 tribute monsters with just one of the 300 atk equip spells on them. A 1 tribute monster and an equip spell are functionally the same card investment. If they're removed, you lose two cards. And removal in this format is only normal spells and one trap that can only hit on summon so it can blow out a 1 tribute play but not an equip spell play before you get some value back. The biggest advantage, though, is the ability to equip the same turn the monster is summoned. It's a play that gives you a powerful monster without having to get a monster that sticks a whole round. Honestly, its biggest weakness is that the strongest 4 star monster is only 1550 atk and there are multiple 2000 Def no tribute monsters so beating over those is a little rough. But they're still interesting cards in that format and that format only.

Fun fact: the anime version of 'Card of Sanctity' is present in the trap card 'The revived Sky God.' It's because during the final turn of the duel between Yugi and the Pharoah, Yugi got to use a trap card as a quickplay due to the effect of a monster and drew Card of Sanctity, which allowed him amd the Pharoah to draw until they had 6. This powered up Silent Magician, and then the Pharoah immediately ysed Monster Reborn to revive Slifer worh a huge attack power. You can banish this card from your GY, then discard 1 "Time-Tearing Morganite"; your opponent cannot activate monster effects when you Normal Summon this turn. _Oh, I get it, it’s the middle effect of Eternal Sanctity that had you bring up time-tearing._ Well I figured if Card of Sanctity is both a good and bad card in itself (You draw up to 6, but so does your opponent), I figured I’d play into that “Benefits all players equally” part, whereas Morganite benefits you exclusively BUT locks you out of monster hand traps for the duel… Also, the first effect is basically a permanent version of Infinite cards.

@@KoniXyz Thousand Dragon was made to be a fusion because it's a vanilla monster with no effect, just a 2400 ATK. Dark Sage has a powerful effect and so making it a fusion would have made it too easy to bring out, thus it was made an effect monster to balance the ability.

Now that Change of Heart is legal (at 1), is there any reason Konami couldn’t un-errata Brain Control (and re-limit it to 1)? Also, The Eye of Truth could work in Nurse Burn, although there are better cards to use in that deck.

I'll always wonder why they didn't just give Thousand Dragon the same requirements as Dark Sage. You can special summon from you hand or deck it if you tribute a Baby Dragon after calling the coin toss for Time Wizard correctly.

Thousand Dragon came before the real life card game even existed. Making it a fusion of Baby Dragon and Time Wizard was the only way they could think of to simulate its anime summoning requirements

@@theking8347 But then why not keep it consistent and make dark sage a fusion too, since thousand dragon is one already
