Here is my, probably unpopular and quite harsh opinion on the whole collection side of yugioh, and honestly card games in general. Card collecting is no longer about the cards, its mostly about the money. We seal our cards in acrylic coffins so that nothing ever could touch them and so that they can be preserved for as long as possible, to remain unchanged from the moment they get carefully pulled out of the plastic pack as to not inscribe a single scratch, because it will destroy the monetary value of a piece of cardboard. And to most it is just a piece of cardboard that has monetary value. Rare are those that find a more meaningful conection to these card. I too am a bit of a collector but i dont care for the cards that are "perfect". There is a wonder that is never explored in the cards that have a witherd edge, showing the white card underneath and a corner that has started to peel and a characteristic scratch on a faded foil that can never be replicated on another card. Those are the traits that hold memories. That to me is more meaningful than any price. Im not posting this because i want to change anyones opinion, but i want you to take a card and look at it, and see if you can smile for something more than the number before the dollar sign. I guess my point is that it has all become so stale and soulless, bouth playing and collecting. The players rather than trying to have fun are all thinking of ways to end the game as soon as posible, and collectors are just trying to play investors.
when has card collecting never been about the money and only been about completing sets? maybe for kids who dont purchase their own stuff. you can say its a hobby but to act like the monetary value is not in our minds when we look at the cards is silly. its like poker, you have to pay to play... card collecting its quite literally textbook definition of investing so there should be no surprises there. moreover i believe what youre describing has to do with the tcg boom from covid times. tcgs have always had secondary markets but the secondary market after all the crypto bros started purchasing pkmn cards, grading them and treating them as stocks is what caused the status quo of tcg's to be changed. Im not a collector in any facet, i got 1 deck with 2 engines on the side, my cards are to be kept in pristine shape as long as i have them. I paid good money for these rarities and i would not enjoy seeing withered edges or any 'characteristics' on the cards as you describe it. so to each their own, people are allowed to take care of their cards for personal reasons or monetary reasons it shouldnt matter to you either way. as for ending the game asap, isnt that the point of any game.... to dominate and win as quickly as possible? if you dont like that is something else. it can be fun to dominate and also to win a grindy game, doesnt have to be absolutely one or the other. youre also only talking about whats public information, majority of collectors who are genuine enthusiast are not content creators nor are they posting about their collection.
@@VojvodaSloboda i didn't make this comment to make the ultimate decision on how to look at tsg-s, I only did it to start a discussion. If you want your cards to be mint, thats totally fine, but i feel like you misunderstood my description of a played card. I dont trow my cards around hoping to damage them. I was refering to already damaged cards played a long time ago that often get looked at as trash. If you think that admiring cards purely because of nostalgia is childish, i think that thats completely fine, considering im of a thought that "investing" in tcg (especially yugioh) is childish. We just have different opinions. Im happy that there are people who share my POV, but I also admire that there are those who oppose it (although i do think im in the minority). As for the gameplay comment, i dont think that the point of any game (card, board or video) is to win as fast as posible. I find experience more important than purely winning, but that, like all things, differs from person to person and this reply would be too long if i went all out on my thoughts on gaming in general. Na kraju samo da se zahvalim doprinosu diskusiji. Stvarno mislim da si fino sročio odgovor, iako se ne moram složiti sa svime. Želim ti ugodan dan i u zdravlje 👍
Honestly wish Yugioh cared more… they’ve let the hobby die IMMENSELY the past 2 decades, and I don’t see it slowing down. With tcg’s you gotta check off 3 boxes at all times. The cards, the games, and the anime. Yugioh has only focused on 1 of the 3 since 2012, while other tcg’s have continued to check all boxes. And constantly reprinting every good vintage card that has ever been created is a killer. I truly hope I’m wrong, because I genuinely love Yugioh.
@@CasualYugiStuff and nothing to reattach the people who ORIGINALLY played this game besides reprints. Host tournaments with ORIGINAL 2002 rule bases, include games with the OLD formats, connect with the core fans who made yugioh what it is
"they’ve let the hobby die IMMENSELY the past 2 decades" is quite the oxymoron lmfao. lets use our heads for a moment here.... if they are dying immensely then how tf does it take over 2 decades to die? If TCG's need an anime to be successful then explain why Magic the gathering never had an anime yet achieved more success than yugioh? Im not sure why reprinting good vintage cards is a bad thing? Are you suggesting that making the game more accessable with reprints is a bad thing?? to me it seems like youre an S+ tier yapper
@@CasualYugiStuff its a garbage point. it takes 3 seconds to realize MTG has more success than yugioh and did it without an anime. yugioh animes have always been obviously for kids, so grown adults pretending like yugioh has a deathnote level of story is ridiculous. the anime doesnt change shit for us, its only to introduce kids to the game ffs.
Konami should just learn from Pokemon, but the truth is they don't give a damn. Tins were fantastic product and got discontinued. Not to mention how stupid it was anyway to put unlimited packs. They could just do themed collection, with multiple set in there (like a exodia collection, let's say), maybe some nice promo, some figures, whatever. The only product I liked about YuGiOh in the past 10 years might be the Pot Collection, at least it was different.
Honestly like having old reprints, just as long as its possible to easily find out that its a modern reprint. I still hope they reprint other sets from the first 2-3 years of the game.
I just don’t see the point in reprinting old sets. They can just create retro pack 3 with a new set list and the original card layout and I’m sure people will be interested. The downside from Konami’s pov is it’s more work for them. I’m also going to be staying away from unlimited cards now.
I really don't like the reprinting of old sets. I don't mind reprinting old cards in same rarity, but I think there should always be a clear way to distinguish the original unlimited from the new unlimited right away.
The other issue konami has that everyone is getting sick of is the prizing for words ect... I think they need to take a step back and really listen to the concerns that their fan base has for Yu-Gi-Oh. And they've got a lot to fix within the tcg. Reprints, bringing out new sets every month, fixing the banlist. They've bitten off more than they chew imo
Would be cool if Konami brought back Special Editions and did what they did during the GX era where it's 2 of the current set and 1 older pack per special edition mini box. Could have been Light of Destruction for the Legacy of Destruction Special Edition, Dark Crisis for Infinite Forbidden, Abyss Rising for Rage of the Abyss, etc.
Hey man, glad to hear your thoughts on everything. I am a bit ambivalent regarding all of these new reprints -- on the one hand, the reprints provide collectors with a much more affordable way to open packs, but on the other hand, these reprints are lazy copies of the old sets. I think it would be great if they modernized the old sets by making some of the old cards available in new rarities. For example, honest is a QCR in the 2024 tins, but I think it should have been a QCR in the LODT reprint; honest is not playable in modern yugioh and not super popular with a more casual audience in the way that something like blue-eyes or DMG is. It will be considered a "junk" QCR pull from the tins and will be in oversupply, but could have been a fun addition to LODT and more constrained in supply making it more viable as a chase card. Box prices show that the LODT reprints were a failure -- in fact, every 25th box reprint was a failure besides LOB (and maybe MRD, but it performed poorly until recently). Also, it is certainly unfair that NA gets LODT and RP1, but Europe does not (coming from an American). My bigger concern is the rampant overprinting of the same cards in different modern rarities. Honest, which is a popular but not super popular card, was printed in ghost rare, collector's rare and QCR. Stardust dragon was printed in collector's rare, starlight rare and then QCR (and maybe ghost/ultimate rare if they reprint TDGS). The same cards are being milked over and over again. Collectors buy a modern printing of the card only to watch the card be printed in a new shiny version that tanks the previous printing's value. Only an insane person is going to buy these modern high-rarity reprints knowing that if you wait a couple years, the card will be available for 1/5 the price. This causes modern collecting to slow to a standstill as collectors anticipate that all modern prices will fall significantly with time. I refuse to buy any modern cards that haven't already been hit by rarity collections and I know that the 100 QCRs in the Quarter Century Bonanza will tank many other modern cards. In 3 years, the 30th anniversary will start and this whole cycle will begin again. Konami took the worst part of the OCG's printing style (printing the same collectors' cards over and over again until collectors are afraid to buy modern) and didn't adapt the best part (core sets containing multiple rarities of new cards so that players can get staples for cheap or bling out their decks if they desire). Who knows what will happen, but I feel that Konami has a myopic view of the collecting space.
Very nicely put man. I touched upon the people not buying something as they’re scared / they almost know as a fact it will get a reprint soon enough… it’s overkill man I totally agree.. even for the LOB-IOC reprint sets they could have made blue eyes 25th and chase cards 25th in those sets…
I agree, Unlimited investing is dead in the water. Nobody is going to pay a premium with a chance that it could be reprinted. My hot take is they aren't done with Retro 1 and LODT, they will reprint them in the future, just like legendary collection. Now I will say that Retro 1 reprint got me, it just feels good to open. I think reprint sets should have double the foil pull rates, I think it's fine because you can tell them apart from the 2020 date. The reprint LODT is rough, pay $20 for 4 packs and most of the time you get all rares, I love GX, but I'm going to skip them. I love your idea about a GX variety, that would be so much fun. While Retro is cheap i'm ignoring my own advice and investing in a few things. I think reprint holos for $1-$3 is hard to pass up.
I'm enjoying the reprints for the simple reason that it's the only way I can access those cards and sets from my country (NZ). I don't have access to TCGPlayer or CardMarket, I didn't have money as a kid to buy boxes of cards, and wasn't playing when other sets were released. Without reprints, there's no avenue to access old sets without doing a risky order off Ebay for what turns out to be a resealed pack. My favourite ever set is Labyrinth of Nightmare. I last opened it in 2003 and will probably never get a chance again. The 25th Anniversary reprints, LODT gave me a chance to experience something I hadn't had for 20 years. They are easily identifiable from the originals, so I am all for it. Good discussion video, I like the format!
I both do and don't like the retro pack reprint. After a 3 year search have all holo's (minus secret rares) but now I can complete the set without breaking the bank on OG print versions. I like they are distinguishable with the 2020 copyright so the OGs hold fair value and the printing looks fairly similar to the OGs. I do agree they should do a EU release, I luckily was just in the US so opened a few boxes for nostalgia sake but now am locked out along with alot of fans
I'm down for reprinting old sets, as long as they are in the old template and not in the new one. I get the point of 1st ed will be the safest ones to get that would secure the value of your cards, but for people who don't have the budget to get those cards like I do, then getting the reprinting of unlimited one or the original unlimited ed is the only way. The original unlimited version of cards will definitely has its value goes down because of this new reprinting and that is really sad, but now it is more accessible to get them too
its strange because it is nostalgic yes, but the thing that made yu gi oh special is that these cards were played. 99% of the older cards are either banned or unplayable by current standarts, and that is what I am missing, when I get the need for some nostalgia I'll rather replay the games then buy a reprint booster box. Tbh for me a game like forbidden memories feels more like yu gi oh then current yu gi oh feels like yu gi oh even tho its technicly not really yu gi oh. So for me the reprint boxes are not a product I'd be interested in, but I am sure people not knowing the games are prob liking reprint vintage boxes because its their only way to experience the past.
I must say, I really hated the 25th Anniversary reprints. These modern style cards take away any feeling of nostalgia and I don't want them in my binder. It doesn't feel right. I never liked the style changes, but claiming it to be an older set... just make something like Battle Pack, Goat/Edison style for sealed pack play. I'd be ok with that. For RP01: I like the look of these cards, copyright makes it easy to distinguish from old prints. It's sad to see that (again) North America get's the good stuff and Europe is missing it. We had that back in the day with Jump reprints or NA getting the better video game promos. I thought that time was over... But I'm really looking forward to these retro video game collection. Will definitly buy this!
i switched back to Pokemon recently after 23 years of not collecing any cards.. plus the pokemon market is amazing it wouldnt be hard to sell the cards if you needed to. Also the artwork is amazing these days. Took me a while to get used to the modern style but its been so much fun and nostalgic.
same here, i stopped collecting after rarity collection 1/QCR, yugioh already has a reprint issue but now high rarity is also getting reprinted theres no point of collecting anymore. Like you i switched to pokemon which is much funner to collect and no reprint issues.
fully agree : they should be creative and put the cards in a new, recombined set instead and tailor it towards the needs of collectors /old format players, without disrupting or even spoiling (in the case of this disgusting new look for lodt) the old sets ! they are being lazy and upsetting collectors imo
Jamie my man! I have been of the same mind for a few months now (in regards to new products as well as graded cards). As much as I have always loved lodt....I could not purchase even a single box of lodt reprint :/ New release booster boxes being Unlimited Edition just seems like a very poor idea, and all to get a few cards for old formats (like you said). Love the idea you have about Jaden (for example) style boxes with themed packs! Anything at all that has value is being milked DRY IMO :') Love the video man and I'll always be here to watch more when they pop up, even on a less regular upload! We need you in the community my man ^^
I think that the anniversary cards should have a big stamp on them to say there 25th anniversary, like Pokémon celebrations for example. Also I think psa grading is a joke and mint cards are getting turned down a lot lately, all the people from Covid bought out all the psa cards and “invested” in them which hinderd most collectors and normal fans,I love the idea of having a lob reprint but they should of defo had the 25 anniversary stamp printed in the text or something big like celebrations, anyway great vid once again !
A really good video. In my Opinion since I am not taht much of a GX Fan I am not that find of that europe got the LOTD and the US got the RP01, I would love to get RP01 for europe just because of the nostalgia to open and see the old cards, whcih started it all for myself. Now I have to agree that the reprints are killing the value for collectors but on the other hand its good for the players. And yes nowadays its more about the value price wise and not more of the card, for me I like the reprints with an alternate artwork. I guess we have to wait and see whats happening next. Keep it up man
I have opened a ton of Retro Pack after getting some shipped from the states. It's so fun to open. I've also invested heavily into it. I think it's the best set they've released in a loooooong time. It's just nostalgia, even down to the way the cards smell.
Nothing wrong with old hard to get sets that get reprints love the retro pack reprint has all the favourites from when I first got into the game and booster boxes don’t cost an arm and a leg for the most part
The way I see it: The vintage market is cooked Nothing is max rarity, not even the supposedly quarter century secret rares. In 4-5 years we will get 30th secret rares like Japan did with 20th secret rares.
All investing is a gamble, always has been. It's easy to make money, you just need to know what to look for. Plenty of times I got something wrong, and a few times I was right.
So konami really is out here making sure cards people need to compete are as inaccessible as possible and ruining the game for the actual players (this is the SECOND time Thrust has gotten shortprinted, and presale for a lot of other key cards from the tin are the same price as the secrets already are selling for from the original set), but they also go and ruining things for collectors by reprinting sets that players would have no interest in playing. Brilliant move konami
feels konami has had a severe lack of vision for the game and what direction they want to take, retro pack/lodt feel like “lol we got bored” releases just feels like there’s a surplus on nostalgic reprints and a shortage of reprints of cards that actually need reprinting - and when the latter happens, a banlist hit is almost always imminent. albeit a straight ocg port, rarity collection 1 is a great example of how one can run a reprint set
This is just great for someone like me looking to buy the cards cheaper.. and if yugioh dies then even better for the value of graded cards.. a reprint is nothing like the original. 25th anniversary is its own category that will hold valie in another 20 years
i stopped collecting after rarity collection 1/QCR, yugioh already has a reprint issue but now high rarity is also getting reprinted theres no point of collecting anymore.
I love that they are reprinting old sets, teaching my son to play after us ripping a lob reprint box has been amazing! However, new sets are just a waste of cardboard, people open whole BBs for 2 secrets. Commons are useless, Konami couldn't care less about the resale market or even really players at this point, money talks.
The sustainability argument is very much against Konami’s favour, you’re very right.. happy your son is learning to play though! The next generation of Duelist!!!
You say konami only care about making as much money as possible. You are LITERALLY describing the collectors market. I think they should be reprinting all the old sets. It's been two decades now. In Japan you can buy most old sets all year round to get old ultimate rares and for the nostalgia. If you are a collector; you have had more than enough time to offload your stuff at insane profit. If you still have them now it should be because of it's intrinsic value.
Bad card quality, bad competitive support, overpriced with unreliable value. That's before any gameplay concerns. I dropped Yugioh personally because I could not justify paying a premium for this thin cardboard crap. It's insultingly poor quality card stock.
@@CasualYugiStuff They really could trick me into buying this cardboard at crazy prices just for collecting if they let material costs be 5 cents instead of 1/10000 of a penny. Even when i'm hyped, like when I bought a bunch of the reprinted LOB to IOC sets to open for fun, I just felt scammed by how terrible the cards look and feel. I get higher quality stuff for free out of a cereal box.
I actually really disagree with your takes here,, respectfully. They really only fumbled with retro pack by not releasing it in Europe and not communicating on the 24 pack boxes. With light of destruction, they definitely needed to use the old card appearance with these, I really don’t think people want the new appearance if they’re looking to buy old cards. But mostly I think it was completely overshadowed by retro pack, which is easily the biggest set since legendary collection. Consider this, what’s the point in having unlimited versions of sets if they’re never going to re-print them? That’s why first edition exist. No one ever complained that the legendary collection sets got reprinted into oblivion. Honestly, it’s about time they started reprinting GX and 5ds. I think if you saw how fast retro pack was selling out in the US you wouldn’t think this is bad for Konami.
That’s a fair point about selling out, but that proves a point that Konami are only in it for the money, they know what to reprint to bring in maximum money
