In the Manga Grandpa Muto never dueled in a cave. Pegasus got the Millennium Eye when he was 17 and started working on the game just a little after. Duel Monsters is a very recent game that just came out in Japan, the anime adding flashbacks with characters playing Duel Monsters decades before screwed the timeline.

I prefer the animated adaptation. I really dislike having a character killed off when you could do more with them.

It's mentioned the Eye, like all Millennium Items, had a dark intelligence in them (later revealed to be Zorc). I always headcanoned that the Eye exacerbated his grief and influenced him into his more heinous actions such as the kidnapping of Sugoroku and the Kaiba brothers. I once saw a fic where he periodically saw Cyndia **all the time** but was never able to touch her, I. E Zorc - through the Eye - was essentially taunting him with her image, driving him mad. And even taking out of the equation just how in control of himself he was after getting the Eye, we're forgetting he was 17 when he got the Eye. He was a teenager, and a quintessential sensitive artist, and Cyndia was his muse. He didn't just love her, he *adored* her. And he had witnessed/experienced several extremely traumatic things by the time we meet him: had to watch his childhood love waste away from some horrible terminal illness (common fan consensus says cancer) and then *bury* her, he witnesses a man being incinerated alive, and then he was dragged into an underground room full of cultists, who threaten and brutally mutilate him (and this is when he still doesn't really know what's happening). It's at *that* point when he sees Cyndias spirit, leading him to believe, in that fragile state, that there was a way to rectify at least one of his traumas by bringing his wife back, and that it lay with the Millennium Items. This is coming from someone who was seventeen - no seventeen year old would be able to come out of all of that undamaged.
