I have to admire the players and their ability to overcome the coughing distractions! Wonderful performance of this early work! It's sooo different from the 2nd sonata!
It's Ravels "sonate posthume", a very early work of 1887 and Antec Milkas comment to the recording is perfectly true. And: I am a great fan of Yuja Wang and Leonidas Kavakos but here I totally disagree with the interpretation (the poor recording may have a good deal added). The rhythm in the first motif is pretty skewed and ever again when the motif reappears, (in the score it's 7/8 with a triplet at the beginning, This triplet is never really a triplet in the performance) Let me add here, that is of course a question of interpretation and not a technical flaw. Both players decided to put the emphasis on the first note after the triplet and so the triplet sounds as if it was before the bar - which was clearly not the intention of the composer who extra wrote "tres doux" The poor balance in dynamics may pretty well be a result of the poor recording - The violin is almost unhearable over pretty long periods and the dynamic is very narrow. This is very unusual for a Strad and a player of Kavakos' quality, especially as there are dynamic signs like Forte - passione, a crescendo leading to a fortissimo possibile, tres marque + fortissimo and a lot of tempo changes. The above has of course nothing to do with my respect and love for both players, it is just my opinion to a performance which - well - went a little bit unlucky. :)
