Yuja Wang’s philosophy of music is both simple and profoundly complex. “I want to relate all life to music,” she recently told veteran British critic Fiona Maddocks. The Beijing-born pianist’s latest album for Deutsche Grammophon, set for international release on 23 November 2018, captures the white heat of solo works by Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Scriabin and Ligeti, a trio of Russians together with one of the late 20th-century’s greatest composers. The Berlin Recital was recorded live this summer at the Berlin Philharmonie’s Kammermusiksaal during Yuja’s extensive solo tour of North America and Europe.

You said it, Heinz. Very interesting semi-abstract piece, which is much more readily approachable than most 20th-century music. Yuja's excellent mind has found the logic of the phrases, something she excels at. We're all lucky to have her. And if her beauty and her showmanship helps to draw people into the concert hall to appreciate an art form that is at risk of becoming a niche taste, all to the good.

Great clown!!! The New York Times Review: Yuja Wang, Trying Comedy, Shows How Funny Virtuosity Can Be The pianist Yuja Wang took a break from her typical concerts for a no-less-virtuosic comedy show at Zankel Hall on Monday.CreditMichelle V. Agins/The New York Times By Joshua Barone Feb. 12, 2019 In all seriousness: What can’t Yuja Wang do? This star pianist has built her reputation on breathtaking mastery of the standard repertory, like the chamber works she played last Wednesday with the violinist Leonidas Kavakos at Carnegie Hall. Or Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto, which she’ll do with the Boston Symphony Orchestra later this week. But in between those two dates, she stopped by Carnegie’s Zankel Hall on Monday for something entirely different: a comedy show. One with music, of course. And, as always, she was radiant in Rachmaninoff and Lutoslawski. But there was - more. She rapped! She sang and danced through a “West Side Story” medley! She did one-legged, upside-down yoga on a piano bench! And along the way, she never lost an ounce of virtuosity.

@Konstantin Ridaya Yuja Wang??? Schickimicki - Klassik!!! ... Like most folks, I did a double take when I first saw her outfit. But I think it's more about my age - I grew up when classical musical was like a white castle in the sky, untouchable by pop culture. You were supposed to dress like the aristocracy! :^> I realize that in this 21st century, the classical music world can't be just a proudly 'virtuously pure' art form; it has to hustle just like every other form of entertainment, if it wants to survive. But at least in this case, the flash of her outfit isn't effecting the music! I'm really enjoying this. Great, and too-seldom played repertoire.

@@republiccooper Trifonov is outstanding when playing certain pieces, notably some Chopin. However, I find his body language very off putting, and he has nothing like the breadth of Yuja's repertoire. There is a good chance Yuja will end up recognised as the greatest pianist of the first half of the 21st century. Yuja's playing of the Tchaikovsky 1 when substituting for Argerich was a triumph. However, for me, she had truly arrived as a superstar in her early performances with the great Claudio Abbado who recognised her talent and pushed her to take the lead in their performances together. I would never criticise Yuja Wang (tho I dont like ultra high heels ) but this kind of music which deviates from the Western diatonic scales IMO never produces beautiful music. Being Chinese it may appeal more to Yuja
@russellparratt9859
@russellparratt9859 4 года назад
You clearly don't know much about western classical music. You've just, in one sweeping statement, dismissed the piano music of Debussy. You've probably never listened to the piano music of Schoenberg, either, which is full of delightful deviations from the more predictable paths of diatonicism. I'll agree with you on the high heels, though. They never look good, on anyone.
@divvy1400yam600
@divvy1400yam600 4 года назад
@@russellparratt9859 You only have to listen to the first 30 sec or so of this vid to see the truth of what I said. Bartok just as bad Alben Berg opera Lulu is written to appeal to 4 legged cats in despair. A lot of Debussy has no general appeal but as far as I know he didnt go wildly NOT diatonic. Now 10 sec of (Schoenberg) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h0-4SZGCd_A.html did NOT reveal anything delightful to me other than the advert for the Chinese dance troupe. Towards the end of the 19 century classical music reached a peak of perfection that could not be surpassed so the only avenue left was deviation from a standard which has frequently resulted in horrendous dischordant NOISE. The same argument applies to cosmology which has taken refuge in FAITH based mathematical incoherence that violates well established principles. If SCIENCE (?) can do such things then it is certain that ART will.!!!***!!!
@russellparratt9859
@russellparratt9859 4 года назад
@@divvy1400yam600 We're not going to have an argument, because I can see we agree on many things.... 1- High heels suck. 2- The current state of cosmology, and a lot of Einstein, for that matter, is JUNK. 3- I'll correct you here, but it was the early 20th century, with Mahler and Debussy at the height of their creative work, when that apogee was reached. 4- I don't like the work of Prokofiev, Bartok or Berg, either. Actually, I don't like a lot of Yuja Wang's repertoire, either. But, if you search RU-vid for her Schubert-Liszt transcription live performance, you will be impressed, I'm sure. But, you keep mentioning Chinese music. Have you considered Japanese classical music? It is of great beauty, with a sensibility, philosophical and structural foundation far removed from Western concepts. You may be more of a traditionalist, and I can't change that, but I find some of the music of Schoenberg and Webern refreshing in a similar way, because it breaks free, totally, from C19th musical sensibilities. Plus, the 3rd and 4th quartets of Schoenberg I find both both intellectually and musically absolutely brilliant and enjoyable. But that doesn't mean I like all of Schoenberg. We can pick and choose. As for Debussy, wih his explorations of rich harmonies, and use of the pentatonic scale, he was conscientiously moving away from diatonicism. If you can find recordings of Walter Gieseking playing Debussy's Images for piano, you will hear the best. It is magical.
@russellparratt9859
@russellparratt9859 4 года назад
@@divvy1400yam600 As for the Schoenberg, I love this work, but the recording I have, with Paul Jacobs on piano, is a fair bit slower, and more lyrical than this interpretation. As for other music, favourites of mine are the string quartets of Mozart and Shostakovich, Wagner's Ring, and the works of Mahler. Schoenberg and Webern's musical and philosophical authenticity I do not question, but in recent times I have become very sceptical about a lot of C20th music, because lyricism has been replaced with academicism, and the quest for a "style" that ticks the right boxes with the critics, if you know what I mean. But contemporary composition can still be musical, and lyrical, and genuine, without being diatonic. Classical Japanese and Korean music achieve that balance, although in a completely different cultural context.
@divvy1400yam600
@divvy1400yam600 4 года назад
@@russellparratt9859 The only reason I mentioned 'Chinese '(and I could have said Korean or Japanese) is because their music intervals are different from what are in practice Europe's and hence they are more attuned to the discord that has, except for experts, FAILED to develop IN Europe. Since the appeal of music is emotional and not academic I think without doubt the experts should be ignored. Same wth Brexit ! Eastern music however lacks the only instrument capable of having a solo identity and that is THE PIANO, Isn't it wonderful to listen to the Eastern lady pianists effervescing over the beautiful traditional classical repertoire. By and large Mahler is for the depressed who wish to commit suicide and Wagner for the impulsive demented elated. Both did manage to create some beauiful sounds ! By the way if you really do like the direction that modern music has taken (no other way really) so be it but dont expect many followers.Time may change things but IMO it will be bloodie long tme. Expect Islamic concoctions by then !

Let's be clear. To the people who criticize the people criticizing the outfits: With these outfits - and Wang isn't the only one - she draws more attention to herself than to the music. THAT'S the issue, NOT the outfits. And musically she's mediocre at best.

She can barely, excuse the pun, play the notes, let alone this music. If this seems unkind, let me explain that this sonata is as great as the greatest of Beethoven sonatas and the interpretations of it by Gilels and Richter set an impossible standard for other pianists to match. They were the two greatest pianists the world has seen, and they were both friends of Prokofiev. Yuja has the best technique among contemporary pianists, but she was dreadfully out of her depth in this music. The playing may seem impressive to the public, but there is an insecurity in her playing that professional pianists would spot. She was concentrating hard on playing the notes, so the finer aspects of interpretation completely eluded her. This music is not abstract at all, but an ultra humane 'silent' protest against Stalin and Stalinism. The brutality, suffering and desperation are all too explicit. Prokofiev, Richter and Gilels all suffered under Stalin's rule and found release in this music. Strangely, although Wang, and the very respected Ashkenazy, were both born and raised in communist countries, there was little bitterness and irony in their renditions of this sonata. Both chose to settle in the West, whereas Prokofiev, Richter and Gilels eschewed the bourgeois comfort of the western free world.

I understand the arguments from both sides re her choice of clothes. I'd just like to add this in the mix: if the conductor and ALL the musicians were given the same freedom of choice in what they wore, what would the orchestra look like? On balance, while I appreciate her bodily beauty, I do feel she ought to be several more degrees restrained. #
