Roundworms found in chicken poo are Ascaris galli. They belong to the nematode class of worms. They are very large. They live in the gastrointestinal tract, sometimes latching on or burrowing in to the intestinal lining but mostly just hanging around in the gut, eating the contents of the intestine- the food that the chicken eats. The worms lay eggs that are excreted with the chicken poo. The worm eggs are then picked up and eaten by another chicken, and the roundworm’s life cycle continues.
Chickens that free range are at risk of roundworms.
Adult hens can coexist with a few roundworms in their gut, but a very bad infestation can make the chicken lose weight, become anaemic and lethargic, and possibly cause diarrhoea. Some organic measures can help - for example research has shown that ground up garlic in the chickens’ water can go some way towards preventing or controlling a build-up of worm numbers in chickens but it can’t actually cure an infestation. That requires antihelminthic medicine, such as ivermectin, levamisole, and piperazine. But I couldn’t obtain any of those during a holiday weekend, so I got a cat wormer from the pet store. But I need to be careful - medicines that are OK for mammals are not always safe for chickens. Also, beware that dropping anything down a chicken’s throat is a very risky business, likely to end up suffocating or drowning the chicken unless you’re an expert.
I find a cat wormer containing emodepside and praziquantel. Emodepside kills a wide range of nematodes including roundworms, and praziquantel kills the flatworms - trematodes (flukes) and cestodes (tapeworms), both of which can be carried by birds and transmitted by earthworms to chickens.
Please consider carefully when using any medicine off label, chickens are not mammals!
If you have to deal with a situation like this, here are a few important points to keep in mind:
Chickens that free range are at risk of catching parasites in the environment.
Always get advice from a qualified vet if at all possible. Ideally a vet who specialises in poultry, or birds, although special bird or poultry vets are rare.
Remember that chickens are not mammals. Some medicines that are good for humans and dogs and cats are very dangerous for birds. Even if the product is safe for chickens, chickens might require a different dosage, because they are smaller than most pet animals, and because birds’ physiology is different.

Two problems I had with this video. I thought that when you have a problem with one of your chickens it is good to treat the whole flock. So I was surprised that you didn't do just that... Secondly, you didn't talk about the egg pull when medicating chickens. I know with Ivermectin you do not eat the eggs for two weeks. You didn't mention that at all. I love your videos and the in-depth way you go about it. But these two issues did worry me.

You are quite right. I did say it's a good idea to treat the whole flock but I only filmed treating one. And you are right, I should have mentioned not eating the eggs after treatment. Thank you for mentioning it.

Ivermectin has been taken by humans for years and is completely safe to eat the eggs.

I had NO idea the worms could be that long! I finally broke down to put DE into my chicken feed once a month. They gobbled it up and everyone is fine. Thank you for giving me what to look for. Little Liza looked so sad. Still beautiful but I just wanted to hug her. Your videos are the best.

Very good video. Thank you. I typically use turpentine and it works very well. I am happy to hear there is pPofender, but it's probably more expensive. The turpentine must be 100% pure gum.

Love all the detailed information in all your videos and the clear science behind choices. Might not be useful outside the UK but I treat my girls (south coast of the U.K.), once a year with flubenvet coated pellets given without any other foods for 7 days. Can buy on line with an on-line vet's go-ahead. I always plan the week to be when the girls have reduced laying for the Winter as I don't like to eat the eggs for these 7 days. the instructions say that eating the eggs is fine but eating the meat of treated birds is not ok. I'd rather give the treated eggs to the dogs. This 7 day treatment seems to prevent infestation of any worms, including the dreaded gape-worm, for the next year. As you suggest, crushed garlic and 'live' apple cider vinegar in their water keeps worms away for the intevening 11 months.

Today I saw tiny white worms (cecal worms) in my chicken poops. Have seen them in your chicken poops? And how do you deal with them? I am a new chicken owner as my hens are under a year old. Thanks.
@chickensinmygarden
@chickensinmygarden 5 лет назад
I haven't noticed them or looked for them particularly. I understand they are not much of a worry to the chickens. However the antihelmenthic I usually use is Ivermectin which is very broad spectrum.

It's based on body weight. The main thing is to be using a medicine that's suitable for chickens. There should be a dose per body weight chart in the package insert.

I have read a lot about DE and many people are very enthusiastic about it but the scientific evidence seems to be lacking so I don't use it. There does seem to be some evidence that garlic in their water helps.

Hi there, One of my chickens is already sick with worms. She became noticeably sick 1.5 weeks ago and upon me discovering, I gave her deworm 'Levam' which I have bought from the vet. She became well again and active and happy. But this morning I noticed she's back to fluffed up and kept drinking water and a dirty bum again. I gave her another dose of Levam again. She is around 3 to 3.5yo I think. Levam doesn't treat tape worms which I hope is not what's hurting her!! Did your chicken make a complete recovery with the treatment you used in the video? Thanks.

@@chickensinmygarden Thanks. The thing is in the past I have spent hundreds trying to treat a few of my chickens and in the end they still died... sometimes even the vets can't figure out stuff so annoying! And yet they get so much of our money! Anyway I did some research and bought wormout gel and gave her these two days. She seems better now but we will see...if she is going to be sick again then something is very wrong...I really think it's just worms...Thanks so much.

@@chickensinmygarden Yeah she seems to make quick recovery the next day after the deworm med. And all diarrhea also stopped. She clucking a lot and eating well again and even bullying the young chickens haha... Maybe the Levam med is a little expired and I read that it doesn't kill tape worms and worm eggs! But this new wormout gel kills all worms and eggs too. I hope my analysis is right. Anyway she's older and I am not after any eggs. I just want her to get well. Thanks.

Goodness me! You don't need to apologise. Knowledge is just information that we have collected from here and there - school, college, textbooks, lectures, talking to experts, web forums, even RU-vid 🙂 The trick is just judging which are actual facts and what is someone's opinion. Both are valuable but the distinction is important. And both can be interesting - and I hope my videos are interesting.

Eventually the chicken will be less healthy, maybe a bit of diarrhoea but maybe not, probably lay fewer eggs but not much less until or unless there are a large number of worms. Not life threatening 🙂

Some of my chickens are showing all of these worms signs but does it affect their walking. I have a rooster that when he was running down the bank he rolled over himself and could have hurt his leg but he also has worms we think so is their a way we can tell the difference. He can still walk but he lays down a lot and to eat.
@chickensinmygarden
@chickensinmygarden 5 лет назад
No having worms doesn't directly affect their walking but if it's a bad case the bird could get tired and weak from the anaemia. This could be why he lays down a lot. But maybe he also has some other illness.

It could be put in the water but it's much harder to control the dose, because each hen drinks more water if she's thirsty or less if she's not.

@chickensinmygarden

Yes, most birds can carry similar parasites. It's safest to treat them all the same, using the same control and monitoring for all of them, and if you have to treat them, treat them all.
@pickupwisdom86

@chickensinmygarden
@chickensinmygarden Год назад
I'm not aware of any official egg withholding periods nor information that there is no withholding period, because Ivermectin is used off label for chickens - at least here in New Zealand. But I agree it's quite safe for humans to take directly so it seems likely that eating eggs from chickens treated with it would also be safe. In fact I have done it, but I wouldn't like to tell others to do it because I really don't know. Have a great day 🙂
