His "ritual s-uicide" was seppuku, and he was one of the last notable people to do it in modern times. (other than his second immediately after him, and Isao Inokuma in 2001) For those who don't know, seppuku is the Japanese s-uicide by self-disembowelment, which is often followed by decapitation by the person's "second" in the ritual.
Based on what? A gay writer who loved muscles and swords and was in love with white European culture as he was with Japanese. I'll give you tgat he was an intersting character, but I think you overstate his importance significantly.

Some of the people lauding him here are very lightweight in the brains department. I think Mishima embodied the dilemma of Japan, at once traditional but always innovative. Eastern but attracted to so much created in the West. And him, highly intellectual but attracted to posing as a tough guy. But certainly an interesting study in character.
