I would read a few more before tackling the Sea of Fertility. His essay "Sun and Steel" offers a great window into his aesthetics.

What books would you recommend reading before the Sea of Fertility, in that case? And when would one read Sun and Steel? Ive begun reading his works but I had initially been filtered pretty hard when picking up Sun and Steel for the first time

@@juanabovetherest Yes, Sun and Steel is a difficult book. The Golden Pavillion is a example of Mishima's esthetic obsessions and Confessions of a Mask for his multilayered personality. Don't forget that he was for several years a boy who only read and looked at the world from his window. That created a split that made that genius long all his life for action, but always brought himself back to the point of view of the esthet.

Temple was my first Mishima. Captured by his prose, I’ll never forget my first read through. Made a big impression on me as a young man.

Life for sale is probably the most accessible of Mishima's novels. It was the first of his works I've read and I throughly enjoyed it.

FINALLY ANOTHER FAN OF IT. It was my introduction to Mishima and I fell in love with it, I’m sad that most Mishima fans don’t seem to enjoy it.

It was also my first introduction to Mishima! I think I really fell in love with the way he makes social commentary through his often polarizing characters, and the absurdity yet relatability of his stories. Even after reading many of his other works Life For Sale is still one of my favorites because I find it to be on the lighter side.

I became fascinating with the biography of Yukio Mishima at a young age and I thought of becoming an American writer. I read a fiction book from Nora Roberts and I enjoyed it. I heard James Patterson is another great writer too.

Good choices, but I think perhaps the best book to understand his outlook is Sun And Steel

@CrazyGuyoftheWest
@CrazyGuyoftheWest 5 месяцев назад
@@aniis4359 The basic premise is that the book is about a homosexual Japanese man growing up in the 1930s and 1940s. I would say it transcends what is referred to as "Queer Literature", and is simply descriptive of what it means to have a persona separate from your true self. What that does to somebody. It's really good.

I started with his tetralogy. Anyone willing to commit a coup d’état and stand on their morals the way he did is worth me seeing what he has to say. Made it through the League of the Divine Wind, what a chapter that was. 😮‍💨

at the expense of some of his political ideas Mishima must be appreciated for his unparalleled poetry. Personally his figure fascinates me and I think it would be right to contextualize it in the right period and historical/geographical context
