This video shows you how to practice Yul-Gok Tul which is the 5th of 24 patterns in Taekwon-Do. It explains how to practice various parts of the pattern, such as how to pivot when you are turning, how to move your body during the different stages of the movements as well as how to remain balanced and develop more power. Then, the video explains the sequence of all 38 movements in the pattern.
Before learning this pattern, it is advisable to watch the following videos so that you are familiar with the techniques in this pattern:
Lesson #1 Sitting Sance Middle Punch, Lesson #2 Front Snap Kick,
Lesson #14 Front Kick Obverse & Reverse Punch, Lesson #18 Twin Forearm (& Knifehand) Block, Lesson #21 Back Fist High Side Strike, Lesson #22 Straight Fingertip Thrust, Lesson #28 Side Piercing Kick, Lesson #30 Double Forearm Block, Lesson #31 Front Elbow Strike, Lesson #32 Palm Hooking Block, Lesson #34 Breath Control part 2 (Fast motion and Connecting motion breathing), Lesson #35 X-Stance Back Fist High Side Strike.

Disclaimer :
I recognise Grand Master General Choi Hong Hi as the true authority on Taekwon-Do. The information in my tutorial is based on my interpretation of Taekwon-Do as taught to me by the Founder General Choi Hong Hi and as referred to in his book ‘TAEKWON-DO’ (5th Edition 1999) Published by ITF and printed in Canada.
Other Taekwon-Do Masters and Grand Masters may have a different interpretation of Taekwon-Do theory and practice, so if you are a Taekwon-Do student, it is important to check with your instructor if you are not sure about which interpretation you should be following.

Thank you for your titanic work! Do you plan to go through all patterns, up to Tong-Il? It would be really cool, and, let's hope, useful for many TKD students ;). Thank you once more.

Thank you Grand Master Nardizzi for providing these extremely detailed videos. I am picking up many small details that make a difference when instructing others. It is so important that we do not water down these techniques based on a lack of attention to detail. I am thoroughly enjoying your instruction. Respectfully from Canada.

Thank you Sir for putting your time & effort in these videos, very professional and content is spot on. Would welcome some tips for the older TKD practitioner say 50+ on how to get better, not worse with age! Application of patterns in self defence scenarios, thank again, yours in TKD

Thank you Grand Master! and hello to you all from Finland. Itś very pleasent to learn with you and your excellent videos. Question about the jump lenght in Yul-Gok? My journey with taekwon-do is quite young, but motivation is big. Thank you once more and I´m planning to watch these videos for years! :)
@DonatoNardizzi
@DonatoNardizzi 6 лет назад
The jump is about twice as long as a walking stance. Try to jump to the starting/finishing point of the pattern.

In my dojang, we think of that elbow as grabbing the opponent's head and using a 10%-90% distribution of force between the hand pulling the head to the elbow and the elbow smashing into the head, respectively. Not esactly holding the head in place, but not moving it around unnecessarily.
@DonatoNardizzi
@DonatoNardizzi 4 года назад
I know what you mean. There is no reason why you cannot do this in a defence situation. In Yul-Gok Tul the Front Elbow Strike is too low to hit an opponent in the face if they are standing up and are the same height as you. The usual target for this technique is the middle section i, e. Ribs, Solar Plexus. The philtrum or Jaw is a viable target if the opponent is lower down. General Choi taught us that the opposite hand represents the target in Yul Gok Tul.

Sir, it was reported to me by another black belt that at an IIC they were instructed to go wider than 45degrees when performing the middle block/front snap quick/Fast motion punch.. Is this true? Something about making it more possible to retrieve the return position by reducing the amount required to leap with the X-stance backfist strike. Which sounds plausible but also one of those funny changes that will probably differ instructor to instructor. Thank you if you get a chance to read or reply.
@DonatoNardizzi
@DonatoNardizzi 5 лет назад
Yes it is plausible if you cannot leap 2 walking stance lengths. It depends on the persons ability. But anything longer than 2 WS lengths would be more impractical. I prefer to go 45 degrees on the middle block/front kick/2 x punches, and then leave myself with a challenging leap.

Thank you Grand Master! Just a question on sine wave, when preforming any technique, from when the fighter is completely relaxed to the completed move, at what point in the technique do you tense the muscles completely? Do you do it on the drop? Is it as you move it from a neutral/relaxed position? Or is it just before impact?
@DonatoNardizzi
@DonatoNardizzi 6 лет назад
As you drop your body, you contract the muscles required to accelerate the limbs but the focus is on impact. When you make impact, most of your body's muscles contract sharply so that more of your body's mass is utilised in the technique which results in more energy transfered to the target.

Hello GrandMaster. Can you explain the main differences between jirugi, taerigi, tulgi? if we think about using fist/hand/fingers, target, movement, direction and so on…
@DonatoNardizzi
@DonatoNardizzi 6 лет назад
A good analogy is a thrust is like using a blunt spear to poke with. Sharp enough to focus a lot of force to a small area of the vital spot but unlikely to pierce the skin. A strike is like a hammer used to smash things. A punch is like a hammer drill. It has twisting action as it hits the target.

Hey master, I extended my leg bit too much and I injured my hamstring. I can't lift my leg above belt without feeling any pain. Do you have any advice for faster recovery? Thanks
@DonatoNardizzi
@DonatoNardizzi 4 года назад
Sounds like you have injured it quite badly. hamstring injuries can take a long time to heal, so you will need to patient. I am not a doctor so I am not qualified to give health advice. But I can tell you what I do when I get a torn hamstring. At the beginning I rest it and ice it. After a couple of days, once it has settled I start moving the leg to slightly stretch the hamstring but I keep it in a pain free range. I massage the hamstring using a foam roller. To get a deeper massage, I use you fingers to massage the injured area, but I only press firmly enough to make it feel better, not worse. I gradually increase the intensity of my training leg lifting making sure I do not injure it again.

@@DonatoNardizzi thanks a lot. I will try those and hope for the best. This is such a shame to have it injured. I started training after several years of pause and I really enjoyed it, but now this happens. Anyways, thanks again for everything. The best regards
