I don’t follow piano child prodigies but considering this was recorded when young Mr. Lim was 13 or 14. I am simply amazed. I was amazed hearing his Cliburn debut and to think he was doing this to “Mephisto” years earlier. I am convinced that reincarnation must be in some sense true if only to account for such extraordinary ability and musical understanding/maturity. I do not want to denigrate in any degree or manner his work effort or intellectual ability but it is simply astonishing how he sounds 30 or 40 years old in musicality inside a 13 year old body. He gives me great joy in listening to him expound on the piano.
I feel his is an ageless talent that is to be enjoyed in the way he wants us to do that, namely by becoming absorbed in the music rather than focusing on him.
Don't know about reincarnation-I feel some souls are definitely better off diffused and scattered to the universe. I have sat vigil and attended a number of people during their dying and have actually, like many others delivering palliative care, sensed their passing energy. I believe nothing is lost to the universe and where those energies go, or for how long, or what the universe decrees will happen to them, who knows?
This is a Very Difficult piece to play! I've never heard of anyone 13 playing it before and Never at this level! Most all pianists mess up certain areas of this piece which parts are hard to explain here but the ending octaves is one that nearly everyone misses...especially in live performances where no retakes or splicing can be done!! He plays these octaves with absolute precision and Lazar like accuracy and Great Speed!!! The entire performance is incredible. His performance here could be compared with any Great Professional Pianist with many years of experience over Yunchans and come out on Top!!!
I doubt even Lizt could play the last parts. You're right, even Agerich is in absolute TURMOIL in the last part ang MISSING NOTES on the higher octaves. It's ininteresting you mentioned the word LASER, because in an interview Yunchan's Method of practising is recording a difficult passage in a a recorder and PERFECTING EACH NOTE. That's the reason for its OVERALL LASER-LIKE QUALITY. I LOVE YUNCHAN.
of course, U are saying nothing new.... but why THIS COMPETITION IS SO WATCHED ??? note this: THE FINALIST WERE NOT FROM THE DEEP WORLD------ and it has been good that RUSSIAN like UKRAINIAN were present...... PS: LISZT non only played these pieces, bu also WRITTEN THEM...... remember and try to not exaggerate like ususally do american people....-.- in hollywoodian style..........
Richard Soler. Look on RU-vid for Alexander Malofeev who was also 13 yrs old when he played Mephisto's Waltz. Two execeptional 13 yr olds. I agree with Jean Pierre that we should neve forget Listz the creator, composer. We have many recordings of Rachmaninoff playing his works to remind us of his virtuosity as a pianist aside from his genius as a composer. I think certain competitions have gotten outsized reputations as the Chopin, VanCliburn while competitions are odd grueling beasts (enjoyable perhaps for spectators) but that's a whole other subject.
This phenomenon of child-prodigy is the incarnation of the piano itself! Now that he won the Van Cliburn competition, it is clear, as a lake reflecting the clouds and the skies, that Yunchan Lim is one of the greatest pianists of all times. But even more incredible, he is a musician of the highest order, in the order of Melchizedek, the high priest! I heard his phenomenal rendition of the 3rd concerto of Rachmaninoff, and I went back and forth to Vladimir Horowitz’ version, just to compare the two titans of pianism, and I have to admit that Yunchan Lim is in equal terms (perhaps better): flawless, aggressive, sensitive, explosive, transcendental, lyrical, dreamy, percussive, ineffable…
There are several very different recordings of Horowitz Rach3. The late 1978 recording of old age Horowitz is no match for his 1940s and 1930s renditions, but of course sound quality of those is atrocious. Good compromise is the 1950s studio recording. So really tough comparison. You can only imagine how he played it in his 20s.... Rachmaninov himself proclaimed '...Volodyia plays it better than me. He eats it like a voracious tiger...' Hard to argue with that.

I love this interpretation of Mephisto. Your musical talent is a gift Yunchan, your ability to accept it, love it and work with it is another one. Neither is age dependent, and I hope people begin to realise this. My Stendahl Syndrome is all due to you. In my 81 years no other pianist has ever touched my heart so consistently. Please keep it up, I am seriously addicted.
@@Paroles_et_Musique name 40 year olds who play the whole set of transcendental etudes, plus two different solo programs, a mozart concerto, Beethoven's 3rd and Rachmaninoff 3rd, everything in the same week, with perfect accuracy. So you say only that is talent, below is untalent. Definitely not, what this boy has is a lot more than regular talent.
@@albertomartin4812 I didn't say he is not talented, I think he is fantastic. I only dropped some sarcasm, its always funny to read youtube level comments where Joe or whatever, aged 10 or whatever, plays better than adults. Of course Yunchan plays better than millions of 40 years adults. But I know tons of them who play better than him, especially because they are 40 yo and he is only 18, which is absolutely normal. Interpreting music requires also life experience and is not only about who has more stamina.
@@Paroles_et_Musique You kmow 'tons' of 40 yo pianists (not even mentioning 'play better than Lim')? You are exaggerating too. Are you saying, all the cmpetitors at YIS (2019) and VC were 'untalented' adults? This teenager won over them, which obviously means he played better than them. Age doesn't guarantee maturity. I know a lot 40+ yo who are just as childish as they possibly can be. Maybe some pianists at 40 lose their passion and abilities. I sometimes think Lim’s biggest obstacle is his age. Maybe it could have been better for him, if his age were never known- then people would have more appreciated his music.

The 13 yr old Yuchan Lim is truly amazing. I was also amazed to hear Alexander Malofeev playing this very piece and at age 13. Here is the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0B8vjZoI5hl.html I don't want to compare them. Rather, it is quite an experience to hear them - both playing with such maturity and virtuosity. There are no doubt other prodigies who have played this. Perhaps not as masterly and there are not many - understatement! If link does not work put Alexander Malofeev, Mephisto Waltz and will come up. Don't know why link is not always working.
