When you’re young you make a big deal out of these things, like some teens do about their bf liking their new pics or not. @meimeivaj8334 its just a pointless convo to have for the purpose of bantering to fill the time., there’s plenty of meaningless conversations that I have in the US, about scenarios that’s really pointless but it’s fun to argue just for the sake of it. Also Americans aren’t very openminded, idk where this stereotype comes from but a lot of Americans are very close minded unless you agree with them .

It's just really immature, honestly. If your friend is someone you care about, then you want your boyfriend to treat your friend well too. Helping a friend with a vegetable isn't cheating. Like how jealous do you have to be to think that? If you have a problem with your boyfriend doing that, then help your friend yourself. But seriously, it just feels like dumb to get jealous about your boyfriend helping your friend it's something so minor while in your presence. You can see there's nothing going on. He's just being helpful. It really annoys me when people think like this because you're just removing your partner's agency in the matter- let him do what he was going to do. The perilla leave debate is so confusing for anyone who's not Korean because it's just a vegetable and in the example your friend is the only one who needs help. So helping someone with something as insignificant as that is seen as normal. So a better example to explain the nuance would be "Say you your bf and your friend are going somewhere. She gets in the front passenger seat, so you have to sit in the back and your bf says nothing about it." or "You, your bf, and your friend are in school and are walking to another class. Your bf offers to carry your friends stuff for her even though you're both holding stuff."

@@cindynguyen5661 But the thing is this is just a cultural thing people outside of Korea just wouldn’t understand. There’s a level of intimacy behind it, the equivalent is more like if your significant other lent another person their jacket or coat when it’s cold out. I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to say these kinds of things when you don’t even fully understand the cultural scope of it. Plus it’s not that big of a deal lol, just a fun debate to kill time.

It’s not even that she’s American lmao it’s more so on how she views the situation, cause trust me lots of American couples would be tripping if you helped another person/girl/guy out with that lmao It just depends 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

It’s not a big deal, but if a girl is insecure then maybe you don’t help. But if they don’t give a shit help. It means nothing. Depends on the person your dating.

I see this trope over and over again in western media as this big romantic gesture lol. I get it though! For us Americans, helping someone like that has no meaning. But in korea, if your boyfriend is using his utensils to help your female friend (just assuming it’s hetero for the concept) it can be seen as flirting.

my answer to this question: I'm fine abt my bf helping her with the perilla leaf but the premise is to not make the ambiguous atmosphere, if that make sense?

the best way to ask non-korean this question is to change perilla leaf with shrimp... like would you be okay if your boyfriend took a shrimp, peeled it and then gave it to your friend?

If he just handed it to her, sure. As long as he doesn’t feed her.
