I can't get the wheel high enough. Shifting my weight back only lift the wheel a few inches and pedaling adds a few more. The best I can get with any combination of the two is about 10" for 1/2 a second. It is not possible to get my weight back very far because I am very short (and chain stays are NOT shorter on small frames) so it all seems to come down to torque and the fast-twitch muscle power it takes to deliver it. My slow-twitch body can't do it.

How to manual maybe?
@mainettizak
@mainettizak 6 лет назад
flightless hobbit, size doesn't matter,you can do it, you have to find your point of balance, and try to keep it. Do not have your arms straight, have them slightly bent, and do not stop paddling, not too slow not too fast. Your seat has to be way low, this guy in the video has his to high. Try going up the hill until you get comfortable using the brake, slightly tap the brake when you start to lean back and paddle to bring the front back up, once you get the brake reaction wired in your brain you can start to try going down the hill, down the hill was how I learned wheelie and manual, check portal wheeling channel, good luck.

i started to learn to wheelie from a few other vids before lockdown....when lockdown came in i was riding almost every day and wheelieing everywhere.. now in total i have about 8 months solid practice...i can wheelie over a kilometer and almost a mile is my longest.. i can wheelie one handed for about 40 metres and i am now learning swerving.. oh and i can cruise down hills..and can feel the begins of a manual coming on... i am an old guy and i get so much joy out of the wheelies, now i can ride them for a long time..its like theraputic...like meditation. ...meditation mixed with joy and relaxation. I LOVE IT. TIPS... you need to wheelie a lot...and keep the tyres hard, not rock hard but proper firm...one day i could nt wheelie any more and foudn it was my tyres were too soft causing bounce. when you wheelie a lot you are basically going over the same recoveries, the same wheel dropping, the same flipping out scenarios time and time again until recovering from virtually anything becomes MUSCLE MEMORY...and also the braking changes to special types of touching of the brake...it happens automatic...sometimes your muscle memory presses quite hard, other times it is gentle and many touches ..other thimes you hold on a bit... all this specialised feathering of the brake has to happen automatically...and you only get that from lots of practice and cementing all these different scenarious into your muscle memory..not each scenario jsut onece...each scenario needs to be attmpted recovery at least 100 times... so this is how much practice you need. always try and improve... like i was going to side at first after about 100 metres..always went to the side...but now that doesnt happen as much because i recover it. automatically... also practice one hand stuff...as it really brings in that balance point..practice for a split second then one second etc....and when you wheelie 2 handed a couple days later you will have more control over the balance point and a deeper feeling about it. now my wheelies are really slow...i can almost come to a dead stop and still carry on. the bike used to run away from me, but now my issue is that i am going to slow a lot of the time ..i mean slower than walking pace . some people will resent you for wheelieng especially at my age. kids will love it . others think you are just a big head...but the truth is it brings great joy and fantastic control over your bike for any scenario. try and get the wheelie smooth....ideally after some months practice you dont want to have your front wheel bobbing up and down as you wheelie...as your brake control should be outstanding....so it just keeps the wheel pretty level.. if you are bobbing up and down all the time work on your foot pressure on the pedals and you are hitting the brake too hard and bringing the wheel down too much... always work on these fine adjustments...and remember the perfect wheelie is actually very slow ...no brake.... smooth....and straight...after this you can add tricks and stuff which dont really appeal to me....but if you are tiring out and stuff...you are probably going to fast, wasting a lot of energy because you are recovering all the time and cant keep the wheel straight.....are having bursts of strenght because you are not smooth...and the front end is bobbing up and down forcing you to work to maintain the wheeelie and last but not liest ...if you really want to cover large distances...after being able to do a few hundred metres...you need to relax and forget about your goal.... i get a lot further just doing a nice relazed wheelie with no real goal in mind..than i do when i say ..right once i hit that building thats 1 kilometer....if i think like that, i drop before i get to the building..hwereas if i jsut relax and no pressure ..i end up going past the building.

It's impossible to learn wheelie just in 7 days. I would say that mastery will take at least one year of regular training, 50 minutes a day. I'm now after one month of this routine and I barely can drive 40 meters without loosing balance. Also later you need to learn how to deal with turns, bumps, curvature of the ground, properly pop if you want to do it in higher speed, etc. Because of videos like this I felt really demotivated, because I initially expected that I will learn it in just one week. So, instead of making these kind of impossible expectations, just remember that slow and steady wins the race. Take your time and do it regularly and you will do it just fine.
@RedSinKen
@RedSinKen Месяц назад
I agree. These videos all have clickbait titles and give people the wrong idea of how much effort one needs to put in to be able to learn wheelie. Knowing the right techniques is just a tiny part of the whole process.

I can wheelie like 400 ft. So fun. Great tutorial. I want to emphasize how important getting comfortable with bailing off the back is. Make sure your rear shock isn’t all the way open (soft). Harder is better for that. I brake with two fingers. Don’t waste all your energy or focus on pulling up on bars. Lean back and push the pedals hard and not in the lowest (easiest) gear... I go up to 3-6 . Cheers!

Awesome video! A few more tips to get more stabile and longer wheelies: Your saddle hight should be at least the half of your normal saddle hight. With lowering your saddle it is much easier to learn using the brake properly, and balancing with knees will become much easier. And I think it looks natural and cooler. Of course it will be harder to get to the wheelie position. Try start the wheelie standing on the bike and when you start it, sit down immediately. It also helps you start a straight wheelie. If you are comfortable doing wheelies, try starting it with more speed about 15-20 km/h. With more speed you won't fall to side, and the distance will also increase. What kind of bike should you buy? Buy a bike with hydraulic disc brakes, it is indispensable. Getting to wheelie position with a bike with shorter chainstay is easier. It is true, but if you are already in wheelie position, a bike with longer chainstay, for example a 29er bike, will be much more controllable (at least for me). Best wheelie advice: don't look at your front wheel, look where you going. Greetings from Hungary!

It's taken around 3 weeks, but I'm finally starting to see some significant improvement. My "ah-ha" moment was about a week ago when I realized I was trying to bring the front end too high and in too low of a gear to sustain riding forward. Now I'm starting to hold a wheelie for several hundred feet, down little slopes or with speed bumps. A few thingsI have with this instruction is that the flat pedals do not help one bit. I'm used to clipless, race DH and enduro with clipless, do big jumps with clipless, so it feels natural to me. I had a few days when I tried to do this on flats and it made no difference, it definitely didn't "help". My assumption is that's what the rider in the video is more comfortable with, but that's not a valid reason for everyone to do it. The other is starting out in a high (hard) enough gear, for about 2 weeks straight I was trying to bring the front end up too far, in too low of a gear. I was behind the actual balance point when I was trying to do this, but so much emphasis was made on "popping" the bike up, that I was doing it like this, rather than lower and easing into the balance point.

Very good, TY. I had the most trouble with steering. Steering is much easier to learn if the wheelie is started straight (vertical). My problem I finally realized, was that my dominant arm was throwing off the initial pull. Just forcing awareness of this was enough to cure it. @aribahmed2550

Yes, it is easier seating, because you are more stable in that position and using the hip to balance is easier, but if you have a lot of difficulties doing it while seated, then while pulling up the wheel, stand for a little then get seated.

Pro tips: 1 - Look straight ahead of you (not down at your bike). 2 - Choose a middle gear so that you don't spin out and can maintain your balance.

although i haven't learnt how to wheelie one thing i will say when it comes to getting to tired or trying to practice for more than an hour. i don't know if this works for wheelies but the way i learnt how to cycle with no hands was simply practising on the way to school. i think trying to practice just simply on the way to somewhere means you wont be as tired since it doesn't matter as much if you hold it for a long time. you will actually be thinking about getting to your destination. yes it takes more time but it could be argued that doing it this way would be easier. of course i don't know yet because i haven't learnt fully how to wheelie but from doing it this way the past week i have been able to hold about 2m. not as fast as the way of learning in the video but certainly something to consider if you don't mind it taking longer.

Excellent video, thanks. I have trouble with this. I liked another video that would add something to your pre-training. You mentioned pushing the bike forward and dropping off the rear, to give confidence and feeling of what it is like to "fall off the back" and that it's ok. The other person mentioned you over press your rear brake so that in addition it tells you when you hit the brake too hard what happens, or if you want to FALL FWD deliberately, hit the brake. So do this before starting, to get the feel of the impact of the rear brake. Normally for safe riding you would never do this in say commuting, it is very counter instinctive. The thing I had no idea was the steering the bike with your bum that you mentioned. The concept hit me big time when I was commuting home yesterday (15 miles) when i was riding (not fast) down a calm street with no hands. Having lots of riding experience just riding, on a well balanced bike. And i noticed, oh yeah, I already know how to do this, i steer with my bum all the time. So when i go out to start my week of wheelie-ing in an hour or so, I will be thinking of no hand steering, but doing it the way you were doing it. I guess i have to add knees to equation. I will be using a really heavy 30 lb hardtail (front suspension). Not sure i can get the thing up, i have been having real trouble with that. Oh the other difference was you were going uphill so that you had constant force to keep you pedalling and this other guy did the opposite, he went downhill, so he Wasn't pedalling, and that allowed him to concentrate on using the pedals for balance. For him he didn't mention knees, he mentioned your feet. I expect it's all of it, because to balance with your knees, you are using the pedals. For people that can do this, this paragraph is probably silly, but for me i am over analyzing and excited to get into the sun and try it. The good thing about today is i can't keep the wheel up much, and today I am confident I will improve because the bar is currently so low for me :-)))))) Thanks!
@alutious
@alutious 5 лет назад
Ok I got 3 cranks out of it a few times (1.5 rotations), and one time a 4. That was the longest ever. The front end is very heavy on my bike. I really do not like falling backwards off the bike. And i also got a pedal strike on my knee, light compared to a trail fall. I think the rear brake for falling backwards meant to Prevent falling backwards, the rear brake will bring your front down? This is going to take alot more practice. A third person mentioned you move your hips back and pull the bars straight back and not the more natural lift up, which i have decades of bad training on that. I also see some people really bringing their hips down and behind the seat and letting the seat come towards you. My first practice i forgot to drop the seat and that was obvious so i learned that. I replaced my seat clamp with the old QR one to make it easy. I am now sweating and tired lol.

@@slabbyrider8665 since you dont really have a desire to practice, instead of using your car for your main transportation, try using your bike so that you can get back into cycling. And I dont know if this was a typo but if you have a fear of going over the back, you need to try to practice going over the back. So in your pedal strike that starts the wheelie just push as hard as you can and you should go over the back and you will land on your feet(wear a helmet just in case). That will get you over your fear. Once you get over it, when your wheelie-ing, just VERY LIGHTLY hold your brake and when you feel as if you are going to far back, press and you should go back foward. Hope this helps.
