That is true but it is nice and exciting to see your favorite skater not fall and nail every jump. Presentation is just as important and Yuri does an amazing job. I just wish he would not fall so often - and it does fall a lot.

Actually he was not clean in either Olympics. It just that the other skaters had more mistakes. If he is in the next Olympics, I hope he wins again but clean this time. I love this skater but I do get nervous every time he competes because although his jumps are beautiful when he lands them, he is not consistent and does fall or pop jumps often. I still route for him though and I like him better than Nathan.

Thanks!!! I hope more people see this comment. The ice rink for the fp was not in good conditions, most of the skaters fell in a lot of jumps. It was a good thing that Yuzu just fell in a few and he could do all of his combos in orden to win. Plus his sp the day before was stunning🙌

Not only was the rink less that ideal, but for some reason this Olympics brought about the obsession of quads. Instead of actually performing, everyone wanted to just spam quads, Hanyu included. It felt like that was enforced upon by the judges more than anything, but fortunately Hanyu had enough sense to go "forget all that, I'm going to actually skate" and so he won. I fear for what will happen to the sport after he retires.

@@jase276 Dont agree that this Olympics brought about an obsession for quads. In fact people complained that the men fell too much and shouldnt focus on quads.

In this case, go back to watch Alexei Yagudin, Ilia Kulik and Alexei Urmanov's standards to win gold. Those guys were flawless. I have been away from Men's figure skating since 2002. To come back and watch this number for this gentleman to win gold is completely shocking to me. Perhaps I only watched Men's figure skating when those older guys were really good. I do not know any new guys so I do not know if the new generation can still keep up with the older generation technically and artistically.

P D then you should watch yuzu’s skate Canada 2019 LP or his 2018 olympics. This was not his best performance, but i guess what really pushed him to the gold was his clean SP and the other skaters made more mistakes than him, no skater was able to skate clean during LP.

@@pd3924 Even Yuzu himself was shocked that he won but it's not his fault that the rest of the competitors made more mistakes than him. Also he regretted how he won, he swore to skate clean in pyeongchang. Although it wasn't as clean as he wanted it to be since he was skating with an injury, no falls there, he won gold and redeemed himself.

P D I really tired of old skating fans who compare figure skaters in 6.0 era and the new one. These old fans didn't really read new rules and just like to talk while didn't try to understand that athletes put their strategy base on the rules.The old era emphasized on clean skate than landing quad jumps while in new era skating, skater win by getting highest counting point and mostly if u can't land quad jump that have high point, then u lose.If Yuzuru Hanyu had to compete in 6.0 era which clean skate was matter the most and fell on jump mean lost, then he wouldn't risk to put 4S that he didn't have enough consistent at that time, he wouldn't risk to fall on it and contribute to lose confident for next jump like domino, he would listen to his coach Brian that want him to put only 4T. The rules were stupidly design in a way that u gain more points on fully rotated quad even fall on ice than clean triple jump, if u were the athletes, what will u jump?And if u bring all old skaters that u had mentioned to compete in new rule, they all will lose because they can't jump quad which have high point(And I didn't mean they r less capable than new skater but at that time nobody really jumped quad and quad make skaters inconsistent). And u seem to admire Alexis Yagudin, did u know that Yagudin said that he is athletes but Yuzuru Hanyu is god of new figure skating?

You can really see how much he improved from 2014 to 2018. More intricate footwork, much more emotion, and the quality of his jumps! GOAT for sure

He still was not clean though and did make mistakes. Not hating on him, just being honest. I like him best of all the current skaters so I do route for him though.

USFanlovesjiwoo can u name any male skaters that had quad and didn't do any mistake at Oly18? And he still had severe injury to the point that pain killer didn't take much effect at that time. Anyway I still think he could do clean skate by just cut out some transition to jump, do more 2- feet skating, cross over then jump, like that he could gain more consistent for landing.

USFanlovesjiwoo The guy was literally off the ice 3 months prior to the Olympic Games due to a severe ligament injury that to this day cannot be healed, and he still skated well even when he started practicing quads just 2 weeks before the actual competition. Give him a break.

Funky Pants when i was on elementary school there's a skating place in my hometown, sadly it's a bit pricy because it's hard to maintain such a cold place in a tropical country, but I used to skate there twice a month. the first time i stepped my foot on the skating rink, i slipped so hard but i managed to adapted to it. Sadly they're only open for 3 years:(

But in his 20s, he said there is no specific type of girl that he likes because the one that he falls in love with may be totally different from the type he likes.

I have watched a bunch of tv interviews and fancams videos of him. From his body language and hand gestures especially during the recent Olympics, I'm pretty sure he likes boys. It broke my heart but I really hope that he likes girls and marries a nice Japanese girl. Btw, a person's sexual orientation can change overtime.

The first mark amounts to all elements a skater does (jumps, spins, steps) and how well they are executed. There are defined base values for every technical element, from/to which the grade of execution (ranging from -3 to +3) is subtracted/added. The second score consists of five components (skating skills, performance, transitions, choreography and interpretation) and is indeed more subjective, although there are guidelines for these as well. At this Olympic competition the bronze FS performance by Denis Ten looked cleaner, but was less demanding technically. The final score is also a combination of SP + FS performance and Yuzuru had a phenomenal SP in Sochi, which propelled him into the lead by a comfortable margin. The only one, who was close enough to overtake him in the FS was Patrick Chan, but he didn't skate cleaner than Yuzuru either.

He literally injured his leg months prior to the Olympics, too. Cast'd up and everything. It was up in the air until the last possible minute whether he would even be competing since he was still recovering. It was a miracle he showed up and then on top of it he won. Absolute legend.

Mhmm agreed. His layout is goddamn difficult (two quads and two triple axels) it is remarkable how he was able to land 1 quad and 7 triples after that disappointing start.

Agree! I love the jumps too, but to me it seems like they put wayyyyy too much emphasis on them. There are quite a few figure skaters who I feel don’t get the recognition they deserve for their spins/artistry/skating etc because they get overshadowed by the “jumpers”, so to speak.
