There's this crazy new thing people are trying now that seems to work wonders. They say if you throw that entire bike in the lake and buy a 2 stroke it should fix your problem for good!
thanks for this video man, i was about to sell mine because i had trouble starting it. finding top dead center the kicking works on the 1st kick everytime. now im in love with it.
The 400's and 426's had the decompression levers. I had a 98 400F. I don't understand all the kicking with the lever in. I always pulled in the lever, slightly pushed the kicker approximately an 8th of the way then released lever, returned kicker to top and kicked it. Started every time. Actually had a harder time starting it once it was hot
thanks for the comment, I agree, I have a yz250f 2002. It starts the same way. I've install the stage 1 and stage 2 cams. Stage 1 intake and stage 2 exhaust. Now I don't need to do this. However I never done this with my 426f for some reason.
Th e real secret is in the two of three twists of the throttle grip then leaving that grip it in a neutral position during start up. The reason for the twists on the throttle is because these have an accelerator pump that squirts fuel into the intake for start-up. Mine starts up on first or second crank when I do this.
@ThePeriquillo82 That would be the hot start button. It cuts out a lot of the fuel and brings in more air. So if you crash the bike and flood the bike, this button works great.
I would research how much the crank shaft is. This is one of the best built bike's, for 750, I would buy it. I've got 4 bikes and this is the one I use the most.

i went riding with a family friend and i didnt know about the decompression and he told me to try to start it and i kicked it and i was thinking in my head sheesshh but after trying a few times i stareed it no compression release or anything he gave me props for the whole day keep in mind im 12
I hold the decompression lever in and kick the bike over 5 times with the throttle wide open. Then I use the decompression lever to get it just past TDC and then kick. First kick it starts every time.
pretty much it, but i dont even use the comp release when at TDC, i found with my 02 yz426, from cold, choke on, gas on, comp release on, kick it trough 4 - 5 times, complete kicks, let go of the comp release, let the kick lever come all the way up, push down till ur foot is stoped by compression, when it is bring ur foot up so the lever comes back up, then just apply "ALITTLE" pressure on the kicker, when u feel it go down abit into almost a notch feeling, then bring it back up, and kick it!
@gloyd64 sounds like a aftermarket Hotstart, u dont need that when starting unless your bike wont start when the engine is hot/been running for over 10 mins its like a choke, but for when your bike is hot not cold.
if it doesnt start after u doing bullshits (some are on this video) just hold the decompretion and kick 10 times(to be sure) with full throtle (handgas fully open). doing that will wash up/clean the cylinder. hold the decompration once more and low the kick-starter just a few cm not much(u will understand when u do it).after that just give a gently kick. ive bought it new at 2002 and it was my city bike for 4 years awsome!! never trouble starting. (wr426f 2002 with supermoto wheels)
yea i think it could be the valves though. i bought it used and it was like that when i got it and it was raced kindof hard. im getting the top end and valves done pretty soon so hopefully that will fix the starting issues.
no, only have the comp pulled to find the TDC. Once found, let the lever go. Well once you find the TDC, you need to slightly push down on the kick with the lever in, then let it go.
hahaha, yes they were, that is why in 2003 they came out with the auto decompression cams. I have them installed now. When I get home I will post another video with the new cams.
starts first kick from cold for me with that, ill make a video when im done working on mine and show how i do it, wont be for a few months though, good video though if i didnt already know the trick (wish i would have found this when i was looking for how to start it!!!) it would have helped alot, thanks
forget all that nonsense. get piston tdc with kick starter all the way up high. pull decomp lever in and kick down a little. release decomp lever. let kick starter come back up. kick should start every time first kick if bike is tuned correctly. no need to pull throttle or use choke
Well you should need choke in cold weather, that's why all carburettors have it. But yeah, if you need throttle to start the bike, then the idle jetting is wrong and you need to fix it.
hey just wanted to throw u a message, i will still make a vid when my bike is running however i have no idea when itl be now because my bike needs valve work and a new cyilender head, and i dont have a job right now, when i have it running ill post a vid but i have no idea when itl be. still a good job on this video, i just want to post how i do it, basically the same but u push trough w/ my foot to the"spot" rather then comp release, i find it more accurate also no throttle pumps.Either works
@sigops Very nice mods lined up on the bike i plan on getting the same things lol though might just do the 03 cam mod for the auto decomp, depends on prices. what do you mean a "dual air intake"?? it'l be nice to just kick the thing trough and have it fire up, though once u get this trick down its sooo simple to start, mine is alittle weird and 1st kicks from cold, but even letting it run 30 seconds and then shutting it off and back on again it will take 5 - 8 kicks, gona shim the valves
You obviously don't own a bike ,What he is demonstrating is the Easiest way to start this bike If you don't get it to Tdc and use the Decompression lever it usually doesn't start and youl be sitting the're kicking all day while your buddy's who know how to start they're bikes are already half way down the trail ;) ,These bike's are bear's to start if you don't know the trick to starting it . But they're a really reliable bike that's why I'm buying one
Not on a 4T, Most carbs have accelerator pumps, that when you twist the throttle, It squirts gas into the carb opening, Much like how pumping the gas pedal on an old carbureted car works.
i have a ktm 525 and kicking is a bitch since the kick lever went right through the boot into my foot bruised big time but whats the easiest way to kick a heavy bike cuz i dont get the extra lever on the steer : you pump the engine 4 times with the lever in and the go for top dead center and deflate it some more? the kick it for life???
Rite I'm supposed to be getting this bike next week but after watching people struggle for ages trying to even start the bloody thing im having second thoughts about buying it now 🤔 is there a easier way to start it or could I put electric start on it some how????
yup. I got hot cams in mine. No decompression lever. Starts 1-3rd kick every single time. And thats if its been sitting for a while. No twist of the thottle neccesary.
@Sparten426 i will make a vid, though my bikes water pump and kickstarter spring are shot, (impeller shaft for pump is ruined, and spring snapped) so i orderd the parts but havnt gotten yet, maybe have a vid up late this month?, keep ya posted
I have the same bike. Changed the oil and put a new plug in. It back fires and it's horrible to start. I have been jump starting it to get going. What do you think is wrong with it?
Kevin Vienneau intake cam???? what? lol Devin M go in and check the valve clearance with a feeler gauge. They are most likley almost at 0 clearance, meaning that you need new valves. Valves are maybe 100ish for all of them, and they arent too hard to do if you know what youre doing
could be a bad ignition coil, incorrect spark plug etc. valves most likely need adjustment they shouldnt need replacing they should just need adjusting to the correct clearance as shown in manual.

my 04 yz450f has a decompression lever but I never use it even when I first start it I don't even know why it's there if I dont really use it I only had it since Christmas ? any suggestions
+Corey Couch the 2004 should not have a decompression lever, it was only on these 2000-2002 models. It must be a hard start lever. this video was only intended for the 2000-2002 models, otherwise this video will not make much sense.

Get a YZ450F 2003 or later exhaust cam and install it - it has an auto-decompression feature on the Camshaft which removes the need to use the decompression lever - it then kicks over like a two-stroke - I have just done this to my WR400 - I cannot believe the difference - I can kick it over really easy - no more finding TDC and pulling/releasing - just give it a good kick and you're away - woo hoo ! see the thumpertalk-dot-com YZF forums for details
Luckily i got the hot cams auto decomp in mine. It can still be hard to kick but i can usually start it first kick with out throttling gas into the carb when its been sitting for a month. It always starts. Then if it stalls when warm, i just pull out the hot start and starts first kick every time. I am impressed. I was worried about the starting when i was researching the bike before i bought it. Nothing to worry about at all.
yes it does.it gives it a shot of gas. i had this bike for 3 yrs up until i sold it yesterday. i do this exact technique in this video and starts up Everytime.
its called an accelerator pump. If you twist the gas when its off, chances are you flood the sht out of it and you wont be able to start it. Do some research. Thumpertalk.com go to forums and go to the yz400/yz426f/yz450 forum. there you go.
Yes for bikes like this or any bike with a acc, pump you want to twist throttle 1 or 2 times to allow for the cylinder to have some gas in it, find tdc which is easy for decomp lever bikes and do this process.
