I‘m using this EVF for about 1 yr now and I‘m very happy with it. Works perfect! Makes outdoor filming esp. at bright sunlight so much easier than staring on a monitor.
PTC setup is in the office and the price changed from what I recorded and I'm at home with a completely different mic haha thanks for watching though! Jake
I just received mine and can confirm that Z Cam did add ratio guide markers to the EVF. Also, power is a 2pin LEMO port only. Mine came with a 2pin LEMO to d-tap power cable. No battery power option. So far I'm loving this little gem.
Great review! Finally, a reasonably priced EVF with a wide range of features. I've been struggling with the purchase of an EVF, and this ticks enough buttons to warrant a pre-order at $799. UPDATE: B&H price is now at $999. Glad I pre-ordered and look forward to getting this.
$799USD is a great price. Especially considering the 2 in 1 wireless monitoring solution it provides! Imagine if a live stream production had multiple of these on set and you could switch between the different camera's while live streaming from the app.
Been looking at Teradek IOS transmitter solutions for a little bit, but this seems like a much better alternative. Cheaper, and I get the ability to send a signal to a client's iPhone without having to add a bulky bit of kit to my rig. Honestly the biggest reason I preordered, next to just sitting around and waiting for a reasonably priced EVF for like the last six years lol.
Anti-fog qualities of the eyepiece are one of the most important features (Zacuto always has an edge there): if you can't see the image because it fogs up, then it doesn't matter how good it looks. Since this preview doesn't mention it, we really need to keep an eye on that.
Didn't have a chance to test it out on a full shoot and this is something that I did want to test but really didn't a chance too fully! But yeah, very important aspect of it that we will know more about once the final production versions start shipping. Jake
Thanks for the comprehensive review. As of 11/28/20 this unit is finally shipping! I'm hoping Z CAM continues to develop and refine the software features. I'm wondering if there will be a WiFi receiver that could allow the signal to be sent to a production monitor. Sending to an iPad is nice, but it would be great to have it work with a production monitor.
I like EVF's. But, I still think they are too expensive. Zcam's EVF is well priced when compared to other brands. But, I feel that the pricing of EVF's is more based on the fact that EVF's are likely a one time - or occasional - purchase so they are priced high to make their development "worth it". Of course, I'm sure the costs of R&D are also part of the pricing process. And I love how EVFs keep you focused on the shot without distractions. But, at the moment, I have a 2,000 nit 7" monitor that works extremely well in broad daylight. I would love the ZCam EVF for my E2C. But, as a low budget indie film maker, I have to be choosier about what gear I purchase despite the benefits.
why no manufacturer thinks of an automatic closing system of the viewfinder to protect it from the sun's rays? I damaged a cheap evf just like that, for a 1k paid product, I think I would freak out! anyway, finally a slightly more accessible price! nice job zcam!
@@CVPTV Wow! I'm sorry I missed this point! So I would say that at this point it is a truly complete and incredible product for this price! Thanks for your feedback Jake and congratulations for your always impeccable insights!
Sorry I think you misunderstood what I meant. The Z CAM doesn't have this currently, but we have fed this back. Zacuto, who make the Gratical series have a cover that closes automatically! Jake
@@CVPTV Thanks for your clarification. I hope more than just an eyepiece cover, maybe a shutter system similar to the alphatron one. The top would be with automatic sensor, but I think I'm traveling by fantasy. Thanks again. Alessandro
Fantastic review, thank you! I'm often filming in super-bright snowy environments, so this is just what I've been waiting for - way to go Z Cam! Does the fact this has SDI in mean we could be in for a new range of SDI equipped Z-Cams somewhere in the not too distant future 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for the video. I can't seem to get mine to connect via wifi and was wondering if anyone else had this issue? On my phone the name pops up under networks, I put in the password, it connects, and then says no internet connection with a little explication point. Anyone know any tricks to fix this? I also have the latest app and am on an iPhone. Thanks!
I am trying to load LUTs into the EVF. I tried doing this with a thumb drive, but the load menu says there is nothing to load. I have formatted the thumb drive twice (once as ExFat and a second time as MS-DOT FAT) and also insured the LUT file name is less than 16 letters, no space and LUT extension is ".cube". The EVF won't recognize the thumb drive or any files on it. Any suggestion for how to proceed?
@@CVPTV Image persistence in modern LCD's is not common - just think how often you see burn-in on a laptop from menu bars even after being on all day every day while you work. When it does happen, it's usually not permanent. The crystals are just resistant to being changed. There are many techniques to fix it like having revolving colors or a single color like white displayed for a long time, which will reset the stuck crystals. Moreover, it's a concern for OLED, but not really for LCD. I've never seen an EVF with LCD burn-in, even after 7000 hours of use. How often does CVP see it?
I have the Z CAM EVF and wonder if there is a way to send the WiFi signal to a receiver (other than the iOS device that I currently use). It would be great if Z CAM collaborated with a company like Hollyland who offer a wide range of very affordable wireless systems, to make a receiver that would interface with the Z CAM EVF.
Hey Dave, there is no way of doing this currently. I think this could be an interesting thing for Z CAM to do, I will bring it to their attention and see what they think! Thanks for the feedback, Jake
@@CVPTV I have reached out to Z CAM but didn't get a reply. I really like the WiFi feature on their EVF and just wondered how hard it would be to make that signal available on another receiver. Even without the tools in their app, it would be nice to have access to the signal on a production monitor.
Theres a note at the top of the description, its actually dropped in price since then!! Pricing is a nightmare to make consistent on RU-vid as it changes so much. I've trimmed out the £749 price at the start of the video so people aren't disappointed when they realise the price has gone up. Jake
Excellent presentation. Thank you. With my Canon camera I use an optical viewfinder. Do you think I could use the Z CAM EVF and feed in my HDMI and improve my focus?
You may have to think about how you are going to power it and rig it onto the camera but yes it will be a better experience than an adapter on a 6D! Jake
Have you figured out how to get SDI input to work? We can only get it to work in HDMI. This is our second viewfinder we had sent to us. Very frustrating. I’ve tried 59.94i and 60p and nothing on HDMI
Can someone explain what the limitation is with this cap. Does it mean you won't get any image if your frame rate is higher or you are shooting at 6k! Great review by the way and it's something that I have been thinking about but have been put off by the price.
Hey Albert, it means that the max frame rate you can input to the EVF via the HDMI is 4K 30. This means anything higher wont be displayed. A lot of camera where you can shoot 6K wont output it so I wouldn't worry about that! Jake
