You only get details like this when an Architect is extremely into the engineering side of design and construction. If this was just a standard architect this build wouldn't have all these well thought out details and would be hitting snags and set backs. If she's not already on the NS Builder team I hope in future she is because it's a rare find to have someone with both skill sets.

I think its the opposite, there`s alot of extra details to accommodate architectural designs(glass wall, wrap around deck, large overhangs, shingle siding, etc...). All these extra details allow alot of room for error, its maybe why we always see her on site. Simpler design would be just alot simpler and faster to build.

@@MurDocInc It's often the simple things that cause issue, I've lost count of the amount of sites we have where the architects never thought about mechanical and because it of it's in the centre of the building and has caused C0 poisoning to the owners. Afterwards the design has been ruined because mechanicals have had to be relocated to bedrooms and alike, new cupboards built around them, ceilings down to re run pipes and ducts etc and then redecorated. Things are much stricter now but that was only 10-15 years ago.

He said on another video that the homeowner is the architect, seems like she is nerding out and making this house a big showpiece. Looks great.

Another benefit of Z Girt is that the entire surface of the wall will be perfectly flat. If you didn't use it then you'd have to somehow control the compaction of 2 layers of Rockwool.

This is all possible only if an architect is building own house. So many details only they can think of. She probably has been thinking about this all her life and now it must feel so good to finally make this happen Super house 👍

Awesome work! You might want to consider leaving an air space and venting top and bottom between the outside 1/2@ plywood and the Rockwool allowing any trapped moisture in the thermal bridge barrier to dry.

What is your Z-Girt spacing? The benefit of the Rockwool is that it breaths very well. Is there a concern now that you enclosing it with the plywd that you lose this venting?

To met it appears that the z girt product only captures the insulation to one side. Would it be better if the fibreglass bracket was shaped like an I beam so it can hold insulation batts on both sides? I assumed that these brackets will be installed vertically between each run of rock wool. I'm not in the trade but love your use of media to promote your work.
@julianugentarchitect
@julianugentarchitect 2 года назад
The insulation is a good friction fit between the two z-girts. Nice to have it held on one side during installation, but it’s all held tight by the outer sheathing.

I think Z-Girt makes a lot more sense than screwing the cushion underneath the plywood (or zip or osb or sip) for structure. The thicker insulation, the looser screws you get overtime. One thing I concern is thermal bridging. Is Z Girt thermal bridging value the same as wood? Sorry if I said wrong, English isn't my first language.
@julianugentarchitect
@julianugentarchitect 2 года назад
One of the advantages of the z-girt is that there is one screw on the interior and one in the exterior, so the metal fasteners are not a thermal bridge. The z-girt has a pretty good r-value (15 for 6” depth)and only takes up .5% of the facade. Higher r-value insulation (25 for 6” depth) is 99.5% of the wall.

If 3/4" sheathing was initially used for the wall, then you wouldn't have to worry about trying to catch the 1-1/2" stud when adding your insulation + siding/exterior sheathing. I believe there was a Build Show passive house GC company that uses this as a standard method.

They're building this house to laugh off storms from sea tho.
@julianugentarchitect
@julianugentarchitect 2 года назад
The wind loads are too high in this location to use screws only, even if we have used 3/4” sheathing. That method would be fine on a normal neighbor hood with normal wind exposure.
@danielblais8759
@danielblais8759 2 года назад
@@julianugentarchitect Thanks for the reply Julia. That makes sense. Were other envelope designs considered such as a double wall or thicker 2x's to achieve the desired whole wall R value? I admire your attention to detail and commitment to eliminating thermal bridging. I just wonder if a more cost effective / less labor intensive design exists for a coastal home. Would you do anything different next time around?
@julianugentarchitect
@julianugentarchitect 2 года назад
@@danielblais8759 There are a lot of ways to do this less expensively, but I don’t know of that meet this particular set of design conditions (wind, cedar shingles, high r-value). Panelized construction would be another approach but I don’t think it would save money on a house of this scale.

Could you use strapping instead of a second layer of sheathing on the outside?
@aheadatime
@aheadatime 8 месяцев назад
Yes. You could even rip the plywood down to 1.5" strips and space them out every few feet and save a ton of wood. It would also help create a passage for air to flow through the insulation cavity, which would ensure that if any moisture does get behind the siding, it would cause 0 issues.
@mikeeight5819

asking a possibly silly question.. is the deck set off the wall with brackets to reduce thermal bridging and to a allow moisture path from the top of the wrap to ground? any other reasons anyone know of? great vid!
@julianugentarchitect

Exposed deck structures will eventually rot and need to be replaced (in 20ish years) but the house structure can last 100+ years if it is isolated from those sources of rot. This approach protects the house structure and creates that isolation.

Does the mounting orientation of the Z-girt matter in any way?
@julianugentarchitect
@julianugentarchitect 2 года назад
Generally speaking, the z-girts can mount either way. We chose vertical on this application to prevent any water from sitting in the wall. If you go horizontal, there is typically another vertical layer of battens.

What's the benefit of insulation on the outside of the wall wrap? Sorry if a stupid question here in Australia its always done in the wall cavity, is this being done in the wall cavity also? Also is there an airtight layer being installed on the inside of the walls and ceiling, thanks
@julianugentarchitect
@julianugentarchitect 2 года назад
Studs interrupt the insulation, lower the effective value by 15-25%. Continuous exterior insulation gives you the full r-value. We are doing Passive House level construction and using interior stud wall insulation as well as continuous exterior insulation.

Rockwool is fire resistant, doesn't off gas nearly as much, is rot resistant, and has less of an impact on the environment during manufacturing. Think of those styrofoam coffee cups you get at a gas station, and compare that to a rock. Which one would last longer?
