In this video, we prepare the fuel pump wiring for an upgraded pump know as the relay mod. If you upgrade the pump and are making more power, this is a good step to ensuring a solid delivery of fuel and to prevent the extra current from frying your wires and ECU.

I’m glad to see someone that appreciates the Z31. I worked at a couple Nissan dealers when they were new and have had 5 Z31s myself. Still have 2. My black 86 Turbo car I upgraded when it was new with a Calloway piggy back system. Caveman tech compared with today’s availability. They’re great cars and under appreciated in my opinion. They were certainly ahead of their time when they were new. One of the most fun cars to drive I’ve ever owned and I’m 53 now and have owned nearly 80 cars over the years that I actually drove for a period of time. Maybe I’m biased but I’ve driven many cars and worked on many more. The Z31 is still one of my all time favorite cars to own and drive. Nice job with the channel!

Is it just me or did your diagram and sequence of events at the end get swapped for the 3 and 5 positions on the relay? Diagram says a positive direct from the battery and through the firewall goes to the #5 slot but then later you say it goes to the #3 slot. Or does the part not matter?

Hey bud, what gauge wire did you use? my walbro 255 comes on sometimes, crossing fingers i didn't burn out my ECU, but i figure i better do this relay befoer it does

I believe he uses 10 AWG from battery to relay and 14 AWG from relay to pump

Depends on the trim, the TT uses a variable speed pump so the wiring will be different. If you're using an NA it'll be alright.

The stock pump is controlled by the ground wire going to the ECU and it limits how much much the pump puts out. For example at idle the ECU may be giving the pump only a fraction of its full potential. If you swap out to a more powerful aftermarket pump, the limited ground could fry the wires or the pump itself. Its a more consistent flow of fuel which is also better for dyno tuning. You only have to do this mod id you plan on making alot more horsepower with an aftermarket pump or Nistune

Plus the upgrade adding the second relay allows for larger wire to supply the upgraded pump guys. You can get overheating and cause a fire potentially and destroy other parts of the wiring harness. This as he stated gives a constant power supply to the new upgraded fuel pump. It’s better for performance and it makes the car safer over all

Does anyone know the current rating of this Nissan blue relay? Also, it appears that what's being done is simply letting the ECU see the relay (electrically) as the fuel pump; energizing it only when it would otherwise be allowing power to the fuel pump (by means of grounding it). And has testing been done to see if the pump behaves normally? ... meaning, does the pump stop running after 5 or so seconds when the ignition is turned to the 'run' position without/before cranking the engine?

Yes, the pump still shuts off after 5 seconds, thats the safety part of this mod, it keeps the stock relay

The upgrade is that the pump is now getting a consistent power supply. The stock system limits the amount of power going to the pump by varying the ground strength

Great video. Just wanted to say that your photo shows terminals 3 and 5 being switched for the battery source and power to fuel pump. The photo says 3 is for pump and 5 is for battery, but when you show the relay in your car it’s the opposite. Confused me for a second, but just ended up doing what you showed in your car

There are two black wires which is the ECU ground don't know which one there are two black wires

Hey, I have an 87 Z31 and one of the previous owners wired the fuel pump to a switch in a very unsafe way, I'm trying to figure out how to return mine to stock. Could help me with understanding the wiring better on a stock Z31 fuel pump?

One other note ... since you're running the fuel pump at full voltage, it might not be a bad idea to upgrade the wire to the pump itself, from the relay that is. You have higher current gauge wire from the battery, which is all well and good (10 gauge?), but it then narrows down to a higher gauge (14?) after the relay to the pump itself (stock wiring). Is there a preferred method to getting higher current wire from the relay to the pump? ... going through the fuel pump's tank cover?

There is a way to redo the wires going through the tank cap, you need some bulkheads i think they are called im not sure. I do know the wires that came with the pump itself are about the same gauge as the stock wires. Maybe with a higher flow pump then the one I have would require a thicker gauge

You can use a higher gauge if the distance is shorter, for a longer run you'll want to use a lower gauge wire, there are many "cheater charts" out there that you can use to look up what gauge to run by determining expected current and length of wire.

Full power to the pump instead of variable ground. Just a normally open relay such as a horn relay

Do you leave the stock relay in the original spot and buy another relay to do this also the power wire coming from the pump to the relay does that have to be wired directly to the pump ?

Yes keep stock relay in place and use a new one. The power wires goes from the battery to the relay then to the positive side of the pump harness, but if you want you can go to the pump itself

It seems to be working the only issue I’m having now is the pump won’t turn off it’s constantly running can that be that I wired it wrong?

Make sure the ignition 12v is only giving power when the key is on, other then that you can check if you hear the relay click when its turned on, not sure sounds like its wired wrong
