Z32 Rotor Upgrade

Edit 1: It's come to my attention that I said the bolts for the calipers were M12x1.5 when they are in fact M12x1.25. Do not mix that up and I apologize for any confusion.
Edit 2: The torque spec for the front wheel bearing nut is 18-22 ftlbs and then rotated back by around 90 degrees. In my video I say 180 and that left mine too loose.
In this episode, we are upgrading to the Z32 brake rotor which means we have to adapt the Z31 hub which has a bolt on style rotor, to properly accept the slip on style of the Z32 rotors.

you dont need 1" spacers to clear the wheel, 8mm worked perfect for me, and if you go 30mm z32 rotors a 0.2inch spacer is perfect for caliper spacer
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage 3 года назад
That's true, I guess my wording was off. You don't need a 1 inch spacer, but it looks a hek of a lot better with 1 inch spacers!

what is the point of this? how does it perform better?
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage 3 года назад
For street use you probably won't see much of a difference, but having wider rotors means more of the brake pad touches the rotor, therefore you will have better stopping power. The rotors are also substantially thicker with larger cooling veins. This will allow for more heat to be absorbed before brake fade occurs, as well as being able to dissipate heat quicker. This leads to a massive performance improvement when pushing the braking system to its limits

im currently doing this upgrade and ive been using your video as directions, can i use the oem bolts for the caliper or do i need to have the baolts and spacers for the caliper bolts you have??
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage Год назад
I can't say with 100% certainly but the oem bolts should be fine if you're using the z31 caliper. My only concern would be that the z32 rotor is wider in diameter than the z31 rotor so the z31 caliper might not have the clearance for it

so the Z32 calipers are a direct bolt on or did you have to modify the knuckle?
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage 3 года назад
Direct bolt on! You just need a small spacer for z31 rotors (like a single washer)

do you still have your stock calipers if so I would buy them I ordered some rebuild kits for mine and made me a custom handbrake and all kinds of shit but now I'm having issues putting one of the calipers back together and it's pissed me off and I know you run the z32 calibers so let me know if you would get rid of your stock calipers

@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage 3 года назад
I only have the front calipers. When I did the z32 swap I only changed the front calipers because the z32 uses a different style of e-brake so swapping the rears would cause me to loose my e-brake. Rockauto.com has the rears though. I would get them from there
@Nuggetboy
@Nuggetboy 3 года назад
so i have a z31, i’ve got z32 rotors, do i NEED z32 calipers to do the swap as well or can i use the z31 calipers?
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage 3 года назад
That's a really good question. If I had to guess you could use z31 calipers, but you obviously won't see any performance improvement. Technically the z32 rotor is heavier so it would stop worse. So if I were you I would just wait until you have the calipers and do it all at once otherwise you'll be doing a bunch of work for no improvement.

@@TheZGarage yeah i guess, went to change my rotors and pads and found out i had the wrong ones, i got z32 ones, so i figure i’ll do the swap just leaves my car down longer

I do all my own work on all my cars but I'm the only one that touched this car since 2001 but I love my 86na but I want to do it like yours the na2t I almost thought about supercharging it with the Nissan Xterra or Nissan frontier supercharger I really like that idea too I have done every single mod to everything I can figure out on my own so far I just recently had to put a new transmission in it about two months ago did that myself I can do all I need to do on my own I just don't have the parts at hand
@TheZGarage

I've heard from people who have put a supercharger that it's not worth it at all. Turbo is the way to go with these engines
@Dookieandsons

yes I thought it would just be different if I could make enough power

my uncle gave me his car it's a gold two-seater na five-speed and I've done every mod I could do myself I get to watching these videos and get more inspired every time I've owned four of these cars since I was 15 my first was at 84 slick top two-seater with the European dash the outside of the speedometer was kilometers I don't know why or how it had the European - but I love that car since then I've had a 85 turbo automatic I've had a 87 gold na 5-speed and my 86 then I have now I've actually kept a hold of it for years since 01 when my uncle gave it to me he passed away a couple of years ago since then I have been trying to do everything in my power to make it look better and run better it is a daily but being as old as it is and I'm the only one in Huntsville Alabama that cares to work on these cars it's hard for me to find anything or stay motivated

I took my wife to work about 45 minutes ago in my z and I felt the steering wheel shaking a little bit when I applied my brake pedal I really don't have the money to do the brake swap for the z32 brakes but I really want drilled slotted rotors what size should I go with to be able to use my stock calibers right now but still be able to upgrade calibers later on and still use my rotors.??? and I also need to find someone that shares the same passion and working on these cars maybe I could get together and work with someone and accomplish a few things I know how to do most everything but not quite everything my dad tells me and tells me over and over I'll help you son I'll help you get your car like you need it like you want it him and my uncle were best friends growing up so he knows where the car came from like I said my uncle gave me this car many years ago and passed away like 2 years ago and I've been trying to get the car top notch since he passed as a dedication for the car that me and my uncle both love so much but my dad lies and never comes through and never helps me like he says he will so I wind up doing everything myself with five cars that are mine it's kind of hard to keep up
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage 3 года назад
You won't notice any improvements with slotted rotors on stock rotors and calipers. Really it's just looks at that point. I would just suggest getting some new cheap rotors from rockauto and then when you're ready to swap to z32 calipers, do the rotors at the same time

@@TheZGarage nice! Rock auto sells reman z32 calipers aluminum, how can I tell if they are 26 or 30mm?
@TheZGarage

Anything listed for the turbo model should be a 30mm aluminum caliper. I believe only the turbos got 30mm brakes
@TheZGarage
@TheZGarage 2 года назад
I stand corrected. I googled this: 1990-92.5 turbo models and 91-92.5 came with the 30mm aluminum calipers. All 300zx 92.5-96 came with the iron 30mm calipers.
