Great points on speculating the spec's on the impending Z6iii. One quick thought though regarding a move to 33MP [even though you have a super valid POV on it being a negligible improvement] is Market Perception. I think they need to bump up the MP to help folks see this as a ground up new camera --as the owner of two Z6ii's, I still have a little jaded opinion on the matter. To my point; the early negative comments on the Zf were largely pointed at its use of a "rehashed" Z6ii sensor. I feel from a marketing standpoint the Z6iii has to break away from 24MP spec. Thank you as always for the great content!

Why? The next Sony flagship is only 24mp and no one seems to be complaining about that.

Yes I am happy with 24mp, but from a marketing pov and due to the fact that the Z6iii will be around for 3 or 4 years going to 33mp might be a good idea.

I totally agree that ergonomics is the single most important aspect of a camera today, simple because all the cameras from all the brands I tested and owned are amazing when it comes to IQ. However, there are a few which fit perfectly in my hand, and some of the best fits I have ever tried are the Z9 and the first generation S1 Lumix cameras. If I don't feel comfortable with the body I am using, I am much less likely to go out and shoot with it. As for the Z6III, I know a lot of people are waiting for it, so the expectations are quite high. It has to trump the Z f in some ways to compete well with its Sony and Canon counterparts. Let's wait and see! It's not the camera for me though, I already have everything I want and need from Nikon.

We just need Nikon cameras to record video to 2 card slots! PLEASE!!!!! If they really want to attract video shooters to Nikon they need to record video to 2 card slots! 10-bit 4k 60fps uncropped would be great too!

Hi Matt. Nice video. I agree that 24MP is enough - used it for many years and nobody ever complained lol. That said, I think that a lot of us (including you potentially) thought this camera might have more MP to accommodate 8k video. If Nikon has decided to go with 6k video, which I think is probably good enough, then the 24MP sensor makes a lot of sense. The Z6III should be a really pivotal camera for Nikon. If it is done right (and so far the last 3 bodies by Nikon have been above expectations) then this should be the camera that moves many people back to Nikon from other brands, and also brings all the lingering DSLR Nikon users to mirrorless. The Z8 served to bring the D850 crowd over - as it is better than a D850 in every respect - now the Z6III can bring over all the D750/780 crowd as it should be likewise better to those cameras in every respect. Time will tell - but it is very exciting times for Nikon - by the end of 2024 (maybe even the middle of 2024) I expect that Nikon will be definitely the best platform for FF digital cameras - with the addition of the Z6III and the 35mm 1.2 S - It will have the bodies needed for all levels, and it will have a robust line of lenses that are second to none in the business. Nikon strikes back! -PD

I really feel the Z6III will have a 33mp BSI sensor, just my hunch. 24 is absolutely fine for me but 33 would actually fit so nicely between the current 24 and 45 Expeed7 models. Then let's assume the Z7III is a high-res 60mp body - wow what a lineup that would be! I do need to make a decision between the Zf now, or waiting for the Z6III. Considering my Z8, I feel like the Zf might be the more ideal second body. But then there's FOMO when the Z6III is announced 😆 Rear screen type - one of the most subjective features and I really applaud Sony's approach in the A7IV (I think that's the model?). The downside is the slightly thicker bezel from what I've heard. But for me, the Z8/9 multi-tilt style is ideal, as a photo-primary user. But I do recognize the advantages in each approach. As long as Nikon continues to offer both styles on different models.

Kudos Matt. I totally agree with your assessment. I shot for a couple of decades with a Nikon F2 and FE. Primarily with Kodak Tri-X and Kodachrome 64. For me, the magic of photography happened in the darkroom. In that era, common print sizes were 8"x10" or 11"x 14". Easily achievable with even a 12 MP sensor. Even though my primary camera is a 24MP Nikon D780, I still shoot occasionally with an old Canon G12. It's a wonderful 12MP camera with a CCD sensor and a decent power zoom range. Not exceptional in any way, but still fun. It's small and inconspicuous and I have used it to the maximum of its capability. Even using a IR720 filter for IR panos. People are just too preoccupied with "numbers" and not enough with results. A good photograph is a good photograph regardless of MP or dynamic range or anything else. Photography is a medium of communication. I was fortunate to attend a fine art photography school at an early age, 17 years actually. My lecturers included Jerry Uelsmann and Wyn Bullock among others. In this day and age, there are too many technically perfect digital photos that are completely lacking in character or substance. As are many things in modern "society". Once upon a time I believe a female amateur photographer actually won a Pulitzer for an image shot on a 110 film camera. Vision is more important than technology. You can't fake it in Photoshop though many try.

@@MattIrwinPhotographyI get the points here but they lack the realization of who a Z6 is aimed at. My wish would be that the we get I/3 more pixels. Often those of us who would be the target market for the Z6 III don’t get the best composition perfectly framed and cropping is a regular part of our workflow. Having a larger sensor would mean more pixels in that final crop making for a better result. We know from the Z8 & Z9 speed will not be an issue for the processor so to me it makes perfect sense for this to be a step up and it wouldn’t infringe on the Z7/8/9 and maybe even more importantly makes room for the next crop sensors to grow as well. There could be some degradation of low noise but as you said the ability of software to compensate for what little more might creep in negates the potential of it being detrimental. I think the market place has moved to this sensor size at this price point and Nikon should keep up. Loved the video can’t wait to see what comes from Nikon - If I get more pixels I may trade my Z8 because I am beginning to feel like it is the forgotten bastard step child at Nikon, receiving no Firmware updates other than fixes and/or features promised at release while the Z9 near replica gets all the attention. I that said, I really hope the Z6III doesn’t adopt the “settings banks” concept. They are a mess in my opinion. I actually dedicate my SD card to storing a default, write protected copy of the settings i want in the banks that I can go back to at a moments notice when they get trashed in camera thru use.

Hi Matt, when you mentioned the vari-angle screen, the first thing I thought of was the screen that was on my D5600 (before I upgraded to the Z6 II) and is now also used on the Z fc. This screen flips out to the side and can also be rotated towards the front. I really liked this design on the D5600 and I have missed it a few times on my Z6 II, so I would highly consider upgrading to a Z6 III if this feature is included.

I’m still on the z6 original. However, I use my gaming pc (which is very powerful) to edit photos. As great as my pc is, I have a gaming screen (tn panel 1440p resolution) viewing angles are bad. I mention this because I just bought a Mac book pro M3 model. Holy hell the screen has changed my photos. Super sharp and amazing colour. Feels like I’ve missed out for years. Depending on the price of the Z6 3, I’ll either get that, or possibly spend some extra and go for the z8. Not sure yet. Think the z6 3 and a new lens will be my best option.

About the screen. Maybe I'm the only one, but I sometimes think (and I kind of tried to draw it out as well) of a mechanism that would allow the screen to be pulled out on either a horizontal or vertical axis, with the act of pulling out actually locking the other axis tighter, such that it's not possible to pull it out on both axes (which would mean you end up with the screen in your hand). It would even be feasible to rotate such a screen along the vertical axis on the left side, in order to flip it forward for vlogging. The advantage could be that it is simpler, and above all, that it takes up less space. But yeah, maybe it's not possible, or not possible to make it durable enough. About the resolution. I agree that in many cases, 24MP is enough. However, going to 36MP would allow them to a) remove the AA filter, and b) offer a 16MP DX mode, possibly with an increased framerate, which I think would be great for wildlife. The mirrorless format is great for this, since the viewfinder can adjust to the crop. But maybe only the Z7 III will be such a "jack of all trades" camera. But an increase from 24 to 36MP would be similar to when I went from 16MP DX to 24MP DX (also removing the AA filter) and there was definitely a difference.

It's interesting to see how much discussion is there because of one 33mp sensor out there. However, the downsides of that sensor are rarely being considered. If looking at the R6 II and Sony A7 IV I much prefer Nikon going the way of the R6 II. 14bit 12 fps with shutter, 4k 60 full sensor vs 14bit at 6-7fps and crop for 4k 60. Of course there are those who want both from Nikon, the additional MP and the speed, and please at max US$2.5k, but I don't think this is very realistic. Overall if those specs are roughly in line what the z6 III is going to be then it will be a 'fully matured' z6 series camera in my opinion, coming from the z6, z6s...errr...z6 II. Stacked sensors are likely still too expensive for this price level, I don't expect that until a few years down the line. I think it's going to be an exciting year for Nikonians, with perhaps more than 2 bodies this year. A Dx and something else, who knows? Plenty of options, add to that the *unknown* new Z lenses, excellent stuff, fasten your seat belts...and hide your wallet...😄

If Z6iii is 33mp that might impact Z8 sales a bit, as more resolution makes wanting a 45mp sensor not as important. I would happy with 24mp but 33mp is still good. So make it 30mp instead (but 24mp is fine). The new camera will likely still be a tilt screen as Nikon reps that I asked, says most pro videographer prefer that, while mostly vloggers want the fully rotating screen. It will have Expeed 7, same AF tech as Z8 for fast tracking in video and photo capture. Nobody needs higher ISO over 20,000 ISO due to noise issues. Higher fps would be nice at 20 or 30fps. Vari angle screen like Z8/Z9 would be good.

I could see Nikon moving back into the 36mp sensor realm for the Z6iii. Been a while since they have used that size and tech has jumped considerably since the D810 came out. If they could keep the burst rate, buffer size and only sacrifice a little high ISO noise to do that; I think it would be a winner for sure. It would also negate the need for a Z7iii. The Z7ii is kind of lost on an island at this point. I never thought Nikon would be selling the Z7ii at a cheaper price point than the Z6ii was at launch. The only reason to produce a Z7iii at this point would be as a mp monster (61mp+}.

I hope the Z6 MK3 for the ergonomic part... will have a larger evf of 9Mdot and 120HZ frequency with 3000nits. a Panasonic S1H style 4D screen and above all a new, wider and more ergonomic 8-way joystick. UI choice between 2 types of menus... the classic and a more modern one. for hardware 2 CF Express type B 4.0 ports minimum (SD cards are dead). 24 Mpixels BSI stacked. Protective shield for the sensor. For the video an N-log V2 because the first is the worst in the industry. 6k open gate 60P 4KDCI 120P N-Raw and Pro RES Raw and 4k 120p HEVC 10bit 4.2.2 internally. Here is my shopping list which would make me buy a Z6 III if the dynamics of the sensor are excellent.

Regarding MPs, it depends on what you want to do of your pictures. I want to have top quality A3 prints. You need about 20 MP to do that. When using the 26 MP A6700 and cropping a bit, the final pic is often below 20 MP. That doesn't happen with the A7iv unless I really messed up framing. So I wouldn't consider the Z6iii if it has less than 30 MP. And that's a shame because of this nice 400 f4.5 in the Nikon line up.
@UnconventionalReasoning
@UnconventionalReasoning 9 месяцев назад
It's easy to convince ourselves that "top quality prints" require a specific number of mp. The difference between 26mp and 33mp is insignificant to the print quality. But if it matters to you so much, Nikon does produce a 45mp Z7II. That is probably less expensive today than the Z6III will be when released. But you're in Sony land anyway, so you won't consider the Z6III anyway.
@benoittissier58
@benoittissier58 9 месяцев назад
@@UnconventionalReasoning 20 MP for A3 top quality prints is the requirement from printing companies. Would you notice the difference with a slightly lower MP number ? Probably not. If you print full 26 or 33 MP to the same A3 size, there's absolutely no difference, you are correct . As a dissatisfied Sony user , I am cinsidering Nikon as an option,. The Z7ii is too slow, so far only the Z8 fits my needs.
@UnconventionalReasoning
@UnconventionalReasoning 9 месяцев назад
@@benoittissier58 20mp is an arbitrary number for them to use. The fixation with dpi sailed long ago. People use that number because they're too lazy to think about how meaningless it is. It is one of these numbers that has simply stuck in people's minds (and websites) from decades ago. It is like the myth, "The lens is more important than the camera." This made sense in the film days, when the film was the sensor, so the lens was more important than the camera, excluding the film. But with digital cameras, the sensor contains all the film that can possibly be used with that camera, upgrades from Kodak, Fuji, Ilford, and Afga are no longer forthcoming. So now, the camera, with sensor, and lens are comparably important. It would be nice if people got past these past ideas, but I know I'm asking for too much.

24MP would be fine with me. Global shutter. Make the sensor faster to give me cleaner shadows. And a stacked sensor can give ridiculous resolution levels. For me some assumption are completely false. Having same megapixel sensor doesn't mean same capability. We have a great example of thd d850, z7 and z9. All very different camera, with completely different spec and performance but with same megapixel. Secondly nikon has now a very capable FF camera at the 2000 usd point. So the z6iii could easily be in the 2500 3000 usd mark with m7ch higher spec, for example in camera raw video. Which would be disruptive at this price point.

For me, a z6III just needs the brains/guts upgraded. Faster autofocus, faster processing, better dynamic range - with some head room in the hardware for cool upgrades via firmware down the road. The size format is fine (larger hands, but the ergo's are very workable - if not ideal).

I am awaiting the full specs for the Z6iii. I’m not really interested in higher fps or even higher megapixels than the Z6ii simply because I have a Z9 and the Z6iii would be strictly my night sky camera. For that reason the low light abilities are what i am most interested in. Right now in the Nikon line, the Z6ii is the best low light camera in their line up. If that could be improved on, the Z6iii would be a real winner for me because I wouldn’t have to do as much noise reduction in post, but much more importantly, I would be able to have my foreground much better lit from the start making it easier to bring it out more in post. With my D850 and Z9, even with their dynamic ranges, when I get in really dark areas that allow me to really pull out the Milky Way, I have a lot of trouble pilling out my foreground in single image shots. As that I’m not comfortable or proficient in Photoshop, this is a big problem for me. I know I need to learn to use PS, but with all the time constraints I have on me, it is hard for me to sit down for hours at a time and just watch tutorial videos to learn how to use it well.

Aside from the expected (and totally overdue) upgrades to the AF and more specifically AF-tracking, the one change I would welcome the most is if Nikon were to store the drive mode as part of the custom user settings. A boost to fps (12 with full AE/AF at full RAW bit rate would be a good target) would be the second area of improvement if Nikon wants to go head to head with the Canon R6ii. Oh, and an improved memory card door would be great too. Just copy the Z8 door and call it a day.

I love the low light capability of the 24 MP sensor. I have noticed over time that the image file size requirements of my stock agency and editorial submissions have increased over time. One of the magazines I contribute to is now requiring a minimum 10 MB image file. For a print magazine that doesn't make much sense. Most of the printed images are half page at best. I suspect the motivation is to encourage fresh images from modern cameras. My D200 and D3 images are becoming obsolete. Because of that assumption I don't up-res the old images. Ironically, the old scanned film images are still in play and get used more than ever with the new noise reduction and sharpening software making them better than ever.

I hope that it will be bigger because I’ve got big hands and ergonomics is very important as well as speed for wildlife/sports.

Higher iso performance is what I want to see and AF performance exceeding (even a tad) that of the Z9/8 and they have my money. Otherwise I’ll stick with my Z8 and wait until a true low light level beast is released…maybe a Z9ii?

Makes zero sense for the Z6iii to have better or faster AF than the Z8 and Z9. It makes sense for it to be the same or similar to the ZF which is basically the same as the Z8. For Nikon the next logical AF leap would be in Z9ii.

This seems like everyone is assuming there won't be a Z7III? As far as the screen...pleaaaase Nikon make it a full flip out, enough of this vari-angle garbage, you managed it on the Zf. I'd love to see: around 30 MP (24 is fine though), Xpeed 7, improved AF, CF-B & SD, "full" flip-out screen, tally light (while recording), RAW video in camera. I don't think we will see 6K unless they plan to not have a Z7III, if they do, then I think the Z6III will stay at 4K (because I don't think a 30MP sensor can do 6K can it?) and the Z7III will have the 6K. Whatever it is...make it happen soon Nikon!

As you mentioned ergonomics is subjective My hands cannot get bigger. Z6 was perfect as entry level, small camera you can carry. Z8 is coming back to mirror design- big and bully, hard to carry daily. I understand professional cameras can be bigger. But z6 is entry and should be smaller. I hope Nikon will stay with current design.

and if they make a super fast 24mpix camera, like a z8 but with half the megapixels but double readout speed. They would also easily have a sports camera, might also reach 1/400s sync spead etc. using the z8 housing. This would have numerous benefits.

The Zf basically got all the points I was hoping for out of the Z8 - Expeed7/Z8 level AF, 10-bit video internal and a proper articulating screen but at the Z6ish price point. I’m very very tempted by the Zf because it’s everything I need on paper and I love the look, I just wonder about the less buttons and not ideal ergonomics, especially if the 6iii on the horizon is closer to the Z8.

"My muscles can get stronger, but my hands can't get smaller", that brings it to the point!!! I used my Z6 for 3* 20 minutes at an ice hockey game, it was torture. (with the Z9 it is much better) I would prefere 24 Mpixel, but a very good low light performance.

Is it possible that the Z6iii and the ZF are the same under the skin? I'm pretty sure that the ZF is wider than the Z6ii, and maybe taller, so, with modern ergonomic skin, that could be the bigger size Z6iii that is rumored.

Hello Matt, Some time a ago 4 years cycles were good for tax and. give us time to save. On the other had do I need the next greatest camera or do I skip one version. I think I would have to look very hard to see how much more it will give me than my current setup. I know I did not jump in when the first Z cameras came out but waited for the Nikon Z7ii. Love the camera but it was a bit on the slow side, and as soon as the Z9 was out got one to add to my kit, while still having the Z7ii. Then the Z8 came out with very similer to the Z9 so I did swap the Z7ii for a Z8. Still loving both my Z9 and Z8 cameras. But I think I will miss the both the Z8* and the Z9* and then get the Z8** and the Z9**. Just to get a bigger differannce in what they will be capabule of doing.

The Z8 needed to be pushed out first to make it an aspirational model that was at least more affordable than the Z9. Sony continues to crank out cameras they are outpacing both Canon and Nikon so it made no sense to release a Z6iii. Nikon needed to go hard to slow the Haemorrhaging of customers to Sony. I think it's perfectly fine for you to be interested in what Nikon is coming up with, no one should blame you for that. The Nikon Z6III will certainly be a good camera that will get some of the specifications from the good Nikon Z8. At the same time, I think cameras are now so good for photography (I don't use video very much) that it soon won't pay to upgrade to a new model, but with the Nikon Z6II it's probably worth getting the better autofocus with the upcoming Nikon Z6III, but then I guess there's no new reason to upgrade soon unless Global Shutter with more speed and more pixels is important, but how many of us really need this? I am almost cured of G.A.S. unless I can really see a good advantage in upgrading to a new camera, so instead I look more at lenses, but to be honest I'm already covered well with lenses. If I don't have assignments I prefer my new Sony A7CII (which will be my last for a few years) with a couple of small lenses, as weight and size matter to me for street photography and on family vacations and so on!
