There is a recent Nikon interview at DP Review which says they want to have state of the art technology in their cameras and i think they have achieved that with the Nikon Z6 III. This is amazing because the Z8 and Z9 was already state of the art technology but Nikon surprised us with the technical specs of the Z6 III and it's partially stacked sensor. It's does have the best allrounder package now on the market compared to other competitors.
Well it was just released, it's supposed to have better specs then similar priced competition. The Z8/Z9 are fully stacked while the Z6iii is not. Putting a partially stacked sensor in a Cropped Nikon Camera would have FAR more staying power. Aka a proper Z500. Since there are REAL doubt as to whether or not Canon or Sony will make a proper Cropped Sensor Camera.
@@natureredux1957 I see this different: Z8 and Z9 are fully stacked sensors at a price range where you won't get anything comparable from Sony or Canon. The Sony flagship A1 is extremely overpriced for what you get. Which cameras do you get from Sony and Canon with those massive 6K and 8K video specs in the same price range? None. The same is true for the Z6 III.
@@natureredux1957 You can even get better 4K quality by oversampling from 8K and 6K resolution. Or you can crop a lot into the video frame. The video package is class leading if you have watched Gerald Undone. For photographers: Very good low light AF with -10 EV, 8 stops of in-body image stabilization, general operations are super fast, much better EVF and Rear Display, AF is near Z8 level. Every one who gets the Z6 III is impressed.
Not including chargers is just another case of big companies giving consumers less while charging more. Charging through your USB with multiple batteries is a pain in the ass. Having to pay extra for a charger when spending more than $3k on a camera is BS in my opinion. I'm selling my previous Nikon, am I supposed to sell it without the charger?
Did you watch the video? This is law in the EU, other countries are starting to follow and now it is up to you to decide. But for those that don't need it, or want it, they don't get one. If you think you need one, you purchase one when you pick up your camera from the store :)
@@MattIrwinPhotography here in Canada it's not the law, it's just another added cost on top of new lenses and filters and everything else when I upgrade my camera. Just another case of getting less for more money and passing more costs onto consumers. Shrinkflation. I can't sell my gear without the charger that it came with can I so now I have to buy a charger and they're not cheap either ($75 at Nikon Canada and they're out of stock 🤬). Stop defending the corporations who are sticking it to consumers every chance they get.
Try just running a USB powerbank while you're shooting. That's what I do on anything longer than an hour and I leave with a full battery, don't have to think about it at all (cage and cable clamp is a must though)
I'm not defending. I personally agree. It is ok for you and me to take responsibility for our alternative charging needs. The battery can still be charged in camera. And what is changing is you now have to spend about an additional 2% of the purchase price on an alternative to charging if you want it. And if you buy third party it is less than 1%. Now giving you and me this choice means that thousands of other people, who may never need a charger, or already have a charger, are not shipped one. And thus that means it never needs to be made in the first place for those that don't ever need it, for whatever reason. I am personally ok with that. Apple have done the same thing globally, I am ok with that.
@@MattIrwinPhotography using 3rd party chargers and batteries isn't usually a risk I'm willing to take with my electronics. Nikon Canada charges $75 and$109 for the chargers, an item that should be included with my $3400 camera! Maybe if they're not going to include the charger, the price should at least be reasonable. It probably costs Nikon $5 to make these chargers in China somewhere. This just proves that it's nothing more than a money grab hidden behind so called environmental conscience to get shills on board with promoting it. And also Apple sucks.
Come on Matt! You can do better, stop trying to tote the Nikon line about the no charger in the box and global waste and bla bla bla! It is 100% the Nikon Corp token line. It is money and cheapness that is why no charger is in the bag! Should not even be legal. Allot of the people purchasing the Z6 iii will be entering the nikon eco system for the first time, especially at this price point. The chargers are also not cheap! When you spend 3 plus grand on a camera you should get the damn charger! Who charges in camera. honestly
Tony Northrup tries to badmouth at Nikon every possible chance. His video about dynamic range was blown up. He tries to create insecurity among Nikon users or interested buyers. Look at his miserable "Nikon Zf Review". The comments on this review speak for themselves.
Just got my Z6III delivered Thursday and so far, I’m very impressed, I believe that it will be a great compliment to my Z9, and also become my main walk about camera body.
I just traded in my Z7ii for a Z6iii and so far I'm loving the upgrade (yes I consider it an upgrade even though it's half the MP). Low light performance is stellar and having all the buttons in the same place as my Z9 definitely makes things a lot easier. For me the ergonomics are just right - slightly bigger/deeper than the Z7ii but so much lighter than the Z9.
As you know I’m predominantly a video shooter and finally Nikon has given us a killer camera-right price, right features, right size. I haven’t had a lot of time for testing yet, but the ISO6400 appears to be a big plus and hits a more useful sweet spot compared with Sony’s 12800 which often can be too big of an exposure boost. I’ve also reached the conclusion that bargain basement open gate (S5II, Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6k) isn’t worth the slow sensors and poor low light capability. If I need to film verticals then I will rig separately for verticals and create the extra takes. Your night shots look fantastic Matt. That’s a lot of latitude Nikon have given us. Oh and thanks for the clarification about the EU charging regs. I’m fine with keeping the charger out of the box but a few in the US got their shorts in a knot over it. Happy shooting!
Re: the batteries. I wish Nikon and other camera manufacturers would follow suit with the 3rd party manufacturers and put a USB-C port on the battery itself, so that you can charge the battery outside of the camera.
Just spent an entire day out with the Z6iii and 24-120. I love how it handles. Very much like my Z8 but with a little less weight and an amazing EVF. In this hot, steamy climate I live in, it is sometimes really hard to see things well. My Z8 can be just a bit much for easy days out and about, but the Z6 was feeling like a big compromise in focus and handling for stills. The Z6ii is exactly what I hoped it would be. My poor Z7ii is getting no love anymore....
What up Matt. Good video all around One thing I disagree. The charger. I just think its silly to void out a Nikon charger because we want to keep the world clean. Phones are different. We use them everyday and everyone in the world has one. I personally dont care what the EU thinks and what policies these no good politicians come up with. Here in America , we want a charger. Is not including a charger going to have an impact on making the planet a better place? well there is allot of things the world can do right now that have 1000X the impact. How bout taking care of the homeless problem in the streets. drugs, pissss,. crappp everywhere. How bout we take care of that first . Ok, so Nikon gets rid of a charger. you know China's gonna produce them anyway. You cant cord off one side of the planet and have the other side not follow the rules. Like this green new deal they try to push while Karey flys off on his private jet. how does that make any sense. electric cars clean for air. but making the batteries is counter productive. . I still think the camera industry not making a charger and blaming it on policy or the envirnment is a cop out. its all about saving money.
I got my 6III delivered Friday and i love it, it is a fantastic camera. As far as I could see, the AF works very well. I own three MH-25(a) chargers, that is more than enough. Greetings from Germany.
Currently have a Z5 and Z50 for hiking and motorcycle travel. I was thinking of an upgrade from the Z5 to a Z6II but now I am re-thinking my choice to the new III. I want to start doing more video. If I keep watching your videos you will cost me more money.
Nikon should give consumers the option to buy a a camera bundled with a charger at a reduced price compared with having to purchase them separately in case you’re new to Nikon and don’t have a compatible charger yet. I would be a little upset if I were buying my first Nikon camera at a cost of $2K+ and I had no way to charge the supplied battery out of the box except in-camera where I wasn’t able to charge it while I swap in another battery to continue shooting. If Nikon’s batteries had a USB-C charging port incorporated into the battery as do some of the third-party options then it wouldn’t matter as much. But until then they should at least give consumers a cost effective bundle option.
Why should they? If you can spend 3k you can afford $20 on a charger if you need it. We need to change the way we see things collectively in regards to waste and the stuff we buy.
@@davidgambin2551 The Nikon branded chargers for this battery are $75US and up. Regarding waste, I don't see a recycling label on the likely never used cable management plastic thing. That and the cheap generic strap are both basically landfill waste, and they are packaged with every camera. This is not about the environment, it is about the bottom line profit to Nikon. Don't get me wrong, I love the camera and bought one on day one, as I have many other Nikons for 30+ years. But I don't buy the ecology angle smoke screen.
Took mine out for the first time this afternoon. First...I'd definitely have interest in a Z8a or Z9a (similar to what Sony did a few years ago) with just the better viewfinder and no other improvements. It is that good! Best I've ever used. Second...Really seemed to help some of my "lessor" lenses like the 28-400mm that I haven't been overly happy with thus far. Fewer megapixels seems to help those lenses (and maybe they were designed with this camera in mind). Autofocus was spot on...Third...I forgot how nice a mechanical shutter can be for the shooting experience. Same speed you got from a D6 in a camera 1/3 the price in today's dollars. It's a winner for sure. Cheers!
Well the camera is also e-waste after a number of years so why bother shipping that as well ? Why not just send out an empty box. You would go to greath lenghts to justify not getting something you should get The camera is much more expensive than the model it precedes but you get less?
Are you serious? Z6/II and Z6III have very little in common. Expeed 6 and 7 are very different. PS4 to PS5, Intel Mac to Apple Silicon Mac, sometimes in tech there is a major leap forwards, this is one of those moment for the Z6 range. From a mathematical perspective I think the $500 or 25% increase in the USA, is less of an increase than the value of the increases which come with the camera. And it is up to you whether you need those increases for your use case. And this does not include the inflation over the last 4 years, which might make it close to $300 /350 USD difference.
@@MattIrwinPhotography I think by 'get less' he was referring to the lack of an included charger.😉 That annoys a lot of us for reasons I've stated in earlier replies.
I just bought the Nikon 25A's for the Zf and Z6III from B&H. I always carry an Apple Power Adapter Plug USB-C too. I just like having a backup on every camera. The only bummer is no dummy battery for the Nikon Z cameras for Zf, Z8 or Z6II or Z5 that are different. Cheers! BTW using adapters for the Nikon AI, D, E on Leica M and FTZ to the Nikon Z and loving those old character and smaller lenses.
The argument about battery charges does not hold up. The Z9 charger, MH-33, can't charge older EL-EN18 or EL-EN18a batteries; the D5 charger, MH-26a/MH-26aK, can't charge the newer EL-EN18d batteries. So there is no universal charger for EL-EN18. So do you throw your older EL-EN18 batteries into electronic waste? I also don't know where you get your prices for chargers. A new MH-33 charger is $139.95 in the US; a new MH-26aK charger is $458.96!
This is the charger. $49 usd for first party. Less for third party. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1067867-REG/nikon_27148_mh_25a_battery_charger_for.html
Agreed. It seems disingenuous to pose the battery charger short change as an environmental effort instead of a cost saving effort/secondary sale effort when they still put the likely never used camera strap and cable management plastic in every box.
I doubt most people buying something like a Nikon Z8, Canon R5, or even the lower end mirrorless full frame cameras like the Z6 III or R6 II would classify themselves as casual users and only have the one battery that came with the camera. When I go out for a day of photography or are on a photo trip, one battery in that type of camera doesn’t last the day. Maybe if you are shooting with a Z9 or R3 you could get through a day. USB charging is only practical if you need to top up the battery that is in the camera. Often if the manufacturer has upgraded the battery, even if it is backwards compatible, it takes their newer charger to fully charge the higher capacity version of the battery or at least that is usually what the company claims. I don’t know that not including a charger with this type of camera is the answer. I’d prefer manufacturers to offer a recycling program for their older equipment and/or accessories like batteries, chargers, and cables. It’s a little bit of a hassle but at least Apple lets you trade in older models of their equipment for recycling and even takes a little off of the price on the new model.
Excellent extended look at the Nikon Z6iii. Given that I already have a Z8 and Z9, I probably won't be buying a Z6iii, but the technology in this camera has peaked my interest in Nikon further developing a higher megapixel, small frame successor to the Z7ii. In my use case I can't always fill the frame with the intended shot, so a 50% crop, or even greater crop is needed a bit more than occasionally. The 45.6MP sensor of the Z8/Z9/ and Z7ii stands up to a severe crop better than 24MP. Other than that, the Z6iii would make a wonderful travel and hiking companion. And thank you for the thoughts on our need to cut back on consumer waste. I'm sure there will be some loud cries of distain from people who feel put out by such considerations, we all need to grow up and do our part to protect our planet.
I went to a Nikon Z6 III event last week and the first thing I took notice of was how much cleaner the EVF appeared, it's like turning on the wipers when your windshield has fogged up a bit. I'm satisfied with the Z9's EVF, the Z6 III's is just a very noticeable improvement. You hit the nail on the head with the charger/USB cable changes that are taking place globally. No manufacturer is going to take on the added expense of packaging different versions of their products if they can avoid it. The EU requirements will force manufacturers to adopt a standard and the rest of the world will either adapt or be forced to adapt. I understand the inconvenience to some, but chargers are still available to purchase should one need/want. On the bright side, that drawer everyone has filled with duplicate chargers, just became a lot more valuable.
Matt…weird question. Is yours reeeeally loud when switching from picture review and back to ready to shoot!? I put it beside my Z6II and the Z6III is noticeably louder!?
All nice for the batteries Matt but what for the new users which they don't have one camera with the same battery? IT IS MONEY matter and nothing else! And you are NOT the minority as the amateurs/enthusiasts are the majority and they need them... Europeans they said about the plug NOT THE CHARGER as many devices need more than 5V 2A to charge a battery... Don't apologize for NIKON and ALL the other brands which they jump the train of the ECO loving huge companies!...
I am not apologising for anybody, I personally think it makes sense. It means you and me, we take responsibility for our charging needs. And if you want 1 or 3 chargers, you can buy them. Third party charges are as cheap as around $20 AUD on amazon. And if you don't need one, you are not shipped one.
@@MattIrwinPhotography In my experience, Nikon no longer allows third party batteries in their new cameras, and uses digital IDs' to actively disable them. Some argue that this is for profit reasons, but I agree with Nikon that third party batteries can't be guaranteed to provide in-spec power delivery to the camera. The opposite is also true. After many years in digital design, I fully understand the challenge of fine tuning a charge circuit to a modern Li-ion battery. A cheap bottom of the barrel charger will almost certainly have a simple low-cost charge circuit that will likely degrade battery life. Even name brand third party chargers don't have the design insight Nikon has of matching it's proprietary battery charge circuits to its proprietary battery designs. Please reconsider advising your viewers to use cheap chargers.
I did not advise buying those chargers. I said that is the price. I would personally always buy first party. I honestly cannot believe people are complaining about this. The world is changing. Being able to charge in camera whilst the camera is on first came to the Z6II. Z6 could only charge whilst off. Now Z6III out of the box you only charge in camera. This is change. This allows for people to buy a charger or not. A Nikon one or not. And 2nd hand Nikon one or not. A range of options is available, where of course first party is always best.
Photons to Photos shows about 2/3 less DR at base ISO compared to the Z6II, but your low-light RAWs look fantastic, even with +1 EV and +100 shadows. Is the loss of DR just not very significant?
6:40 - This is about electronic products which have "non-changeable batteries. So from Nikon's point it is being cheap on you, while you still paying more. Personally I have the old MH-24 with my Z7II and Z8, and I still bought the MH-34 charger, so I can use my USB-C charger. Also personally I don't like to use the USB-C PD on my Z8 - as a default charger port - since I already see the rubber failing on my camera, compromising the weather sealing. Only using the PD port when I know my timelapse will take a long time - like when I did aurora timelapse in the cold for 4 hours. That time the battery bank and PD charge was absolute necessary!
Thank you for your excellent video. Now some reviewers started talking about the Z6III's DR. They said that the Z6III's Dr is worse than the Z6. Did you experience that?
Good evening Mr. Matt, I'm sorry, I know this is not the topic in this video but I ask you a question, I have seen your magnificent reviews of the Viltrox 16mm 1.8 lenses, and the Tamrron Zoom 28-75 G2 F 2.8 for Nikon Z, I am starting from scratch both in the video and in the photography. I lean more towards the video. Could you recommend any of these lenses? Currently, I have the Z 30 but I am going to purchase the Nikon Z F. It is very important for me to know your comments. Thank you very much. I sorry my English is very bad
KEH sell quotes for Z6II ask that you include your old charger. So no charging a second battery outside your new Z6III without purchasing another charger. And if you traded in your old rig, off you pop to purchase new “e waste”. Phones have non removable batteries, camera’s don’t.
How can it be so great in low light when its dynamic range is only 12 stops of light? It's no doubt a great camera, I love Nikon but where are the hybrid cameras that have 14 to 15 plus stops of light. The reduced stops of light on the z6iii is due to its partially stacked sensor. So less light but less rolling shutter. Anyways a kicker of a camera, but I need the dynamic range more than less rolling shutter.
Great video; lots of useful information! The Z6iii is probably going to be a big winner for Nikon in the long run. Favor to ask - can you please tone down the large multicolor flashing banner text? It is actually very distracting and hard to read. Thanks!
Another channel challenged the Dynamic Range at ISO 100, showing that it is not as good as the Z6ii or the Z7ii. Can you delve into its Dynamic Range and do some comparison? Since I have a Z8 and Z6ii already, maybe I don't need the extra speed.
Another great one Matt!! I had a quick play with the Z6III in one of Melbourne Camera Stores yesterday. Needed to see and "feel". The little changes in ergonomics compare to the Z6/Z6II are actually very noticeable! For the better IMO. The grip depth and height, the position of the exposure compensation button (as on the higher ends body), and the play button, of course!!... "little changes, great impact"!!!... I have never had a Z8 or Z9 in hands, simply because I don't need such camera. So, I was really curious about how the improvement in the body autofocus may affect the performance of a notoriously slow focussing lens such as the 85mm f1.8 as compared to a Z6 ... And I was not disappointed!!! Focus acquisition is so much faster at mid range, the body really drives the lens to focus where you want it to (specially wide open when moving from a somewhat far subject to a much closer one) and focus is so much more accurate on the eye... Simply a whole different ball game from the first generation... So for those who were wondering, that's another piece of info that may be helpful.
@@MattIrwinPhotography Single tooling, makes no sense to run two different production lines. Corporations make decisions based on money first, anything else is secondary.
@@MattIrwinPhotography How so? The launch price of Z6ii in the UK was £2600. Launch price of the Z6iii is £2700 - they haven't reduced the cost of the camera by the cost of the charger. Nkon aren't leaving the the chargers out of the box because they care about the environment. Neither are Apple or any other corporation. The line must always go up.
Do you think there is a possibility that the double transistor layer from Sony will be scaled up to medium format cameras from Fuji or Hassel anytime soon?
You answered the Bird Detection for me but I was asked that is why some photographers have passed on the Z6III is they need to crop and 24.5mp isn't enough. Well I used the 28-400mm f/4-8 and I cropped and the White Winged Dove looked fantastic. Then I put the camera in DX mode and it was fantastic also. I did not use any Denoise software either. I love the camera and at first was bummed out that B&H was backordered after the first minute it went on sale. So my camera store told me to buy it through them and the first day of shipping I got mine. Bought it without the kit lens since I already got that with my Zf. Playing with adapters from other camera systems I own and I have only put one Nono CPU lens data in the camera. Images are sharp and video excellent. I did have one problem with a CFExpress Card that was freezing up with the camera and it wouldn't turn off. Just popped the battery out and everything went back to normal until it happened again. Bottom of the camera was hot to touch. Back and top was warm but not hot. Switched to recording to the SD card and no problems. Reset the camera on everything and placed a different CFExpress Card and haven't had a problem since. Yes I did switch back to recording on the Type B Card. Cheers!
If someone has a requirement of a ~45MP sensor then the Z6 III was never the camera for them. It seems strange to hear someone say they passed on a camera that was never meant for their use case to begin with. Why do we do that in photography? I never hear people talking about all the other products they simply don't buy because they don't meet their needs. 🤔
I'm a working professional and use my Z8 almost every single day, and often for hours at a time. I use the USB-C charging all the time, almost exclusively. Moving between shoots I put it on charge with my Smallrig VB99 and a good high wattage cable and I don't need to charge the battery separately. For long shoots I also use the VB99 on one of the velcro v-mount clips that came with something else and just attach it to myself and use a cable clamp on the cage to hold it in place. It's pretty seamless once you're used to it and I never have to think about battery at all anymore. It'll go all day and then some. I'm not sure what wattage etc the ports are but I definitely find it better on the Z8 than the Z6ii and that it charges very quickly, I imagine the Z6iii is the same or better.
My method is similar, whenever in my bag I attached to the same as your battery or a smaller one, and cams are charged again for another 4/5 hours. And of course if power is getting low, I can pocket some smaller batteries and run a cable. Even when on the Peak Design clips I do a similar thing out of my back pack if I need to, but it is very rare as batteries usually go the distance :)
No more chargers and yet more expensive..just imagine us owners of the z6 then nikon advertised and pushed the mediocre auto focusing of the z6ii waiting forever for the auto focus firmware update that never came and here we are another body..🤦🏻♂️
Nikon must have hired some former Sony managers. That update cycle is exactly the Sony style: if you want a firmware upgrade, get the next model iteration. The purse is the best feedback indicator to show companies that they are doing wrong. Don’t buy it. Let’s turn it into a shopkeeper.
I own a Z6 (first gen) and I will have to wait till I can afford the Z6III... But from what I have seen (got to test it yesterday for a bit), it is worth every extra penny (the ergo, the EVF, the back screen, the autofocus, the overall performance...). Internet generated the myth of the "magical firmware update"... (not Nikon). I deliberately avoided the Z6II to wait for this one to come. Anyway! My point is, (if I may) forget about what a Z6 was... It is simply the wrong standpoint to look at it, IMO. The only thing in common with the old versions and this one is basically the number imprinted on top of it... Beside that, they are a world apart! BTW, the EN-EL15C will charge on your old EN-EL15 charger, so no biggy ;-)

Believe it or not but there is still single-shot-mode available on all cameras. Even if you don't use those high frame rates the Z6 III offers other capabilities which the older ones do not have. Autofocus is now very low light with -10 EV, the camera is very fast with all operations (including switching on/off), AF performance is near Z8 level.
Good god how long do you need to defend the company for? Spending over a grand? Put the damn charger in the box. “Ewaste” like this, is no where near the issue people try to make it. The consumer is not the issue, it’s the corpos, talk to China about the environment before you talk to me. Put the damn charger in the box
Hello Matt, I am starting this comment while less than 1 minuet it. Your unboxing and thought alway seem so well balanced, honest and worth 23:58 minuets of any ones time, Looking to get a Nikon camera. (As some one would say, Hold that thought) How I will continue. Not charging block in the Box? (I do here this is an EU thing. So this is now understandable) But I still like to take my batteries out of the camera to charge. How get would it be that if Nikon ask there dealers to give the purchasers. "would you like a charger with this camera" and then just give then one. (From the dealer I know in the UK this would never happen as they all tell my the Nikon are still run be accountants not photographers). Charging rant over. I have from day one of using Nikon DSLR found their files from the cameras alway had data and colour detail in them, that is one of the main reasons I love Nikon cameras. You are so right about shooting at 30fps/20fps I have done it a number of times and it is amazing that you get so many sharp and well exposed images it just can take days going though the images, I now have my cameras set to 10fps knowing that if the job demand it I can increase the speed. So sorry for the long comment, but you do such a good video. Keep well, keep safe and remeber to find time for so fun.
Hi John thanks for the comment, and for those that still want a charger, and don't have one, they will still be able to buy a first party or third party option. The logic of this decision by the EU, is for those that don't want, or don't need, they won't get one. And it becomes the end users choice :) This includes the EU.
Weird to hear you say that we could buy a 3rd party charger. I don't have the memory I once did but I'm pretty sure you've spoken about original batteries vs 3rd party batteries in previous videos and that you said you always would buy original batteries so I would think the same logic would apply to chargers. And also... not everybody has lots and lots of usb-c cables. At least I don't But I guess I shouldn' really care about any of this because I'm not going to buy any new camera. Firstly I can't afford to and secondly I don't want to pay these insane prices they charge for them. Maybe if I win the jackpot on Eurojackpot. Then I might consider it. 🤔
Roc. It’s a choice. I’m not advocating you get one. I’m saying you can if you want to save a few dollars. I would still recommend first party if you want to spend the extra $20-30 USD.
Got mine today! Took it out all afternoon for testing/playing. I'm a stills photog, but may need to dive into video with this very capable body. Thanks for the review.
4k in canada and without a charger. damn!! Sake of the planet my ar--se. Less expenses more profit. What would be next time? Smaller batteries to minimize power usage for the sake of the planet...Nikon is just following Crappele idea of making profit by not providing essential stuff and then pushing you to buy it. What if I have 2 or 3 batteries and I want to charge one of them while the other is being used on location??
going to japan and sidney end of the year/ early next year. why would i pick the Z6 III over the Z8? would it be lower iso noise in the Z6 and higher detail in the Z8 ?
I don’t shoot much video; but should I be considering selling my Zf for the photo capabilities of the 6iii? For context, I’m happy with the ergonomics of the Zf.
Been using DSLR for past 14 years (D7000) and I've been wanting to upgrade for quite some time. You covered some of my questions on this video but I'm wondering if you can do Z6III vs. Z8 comparison video. I've been wanting to get the Z8 but been waiting for Z7 III but since there is only $1000 price difference in Z6 III and Z8, I just don't see where Z7 III will fit in. I like Z6 III's smaller body but what I want most is the focus and nighttime pictures. I mostly use my camera for travels. Thanks!
I own the Z8 and it’s incredible but the Z6iii has pretty bad Dynamic range for video and that’s going to hurt it… It’s not terrible and with some skill you can work with it in video but if you are skilled you wouldn’t buy this camera. Just being honest. However it is a $2500 camera and a beauty…
New sub here.👋 Thanks for the informative video. I’m really considering making the switch though I’ve heard some chatter about the lack of dynamic range. I’d love some more insight into this topic in a future video. Please and thank you!
Great video, thanks! I can’t believe 2025 is 4 years with the Z9! Having said that I’m expecting a faster but lower MPix version to appear for the Paris Olympics this year. Maybe a Z9 body with Z6iii guts and two Expeed 7 processors perhaps...
The Canon style flip-out screen is the dealbreaker. Shooting low on your knees, you must flip it out to tilt it upwards, but then the screen interferes with your left hand holding the camera and the screen is out of lens axis. Shooting with an eccentric screen interfering with the left hand makes precise shooting impossible and the screen prone to break off. No one needs that influencer bs on a Z6, they can get a Z30 for it. I hope that thing becomes a shelf warmer after the first hype. Quo vadis Nikon? I once was a Nikon fan boy, still am one when using my D850 and D6.
Nikon has not reached the end goal mirrorless until next generation processor is out, expeed 8. In my opponent the Z cameras still feel not quite there. I have the z6 and z8. Or maybe it’s just the firmware that needs to be done all over. It feels like when they began making Z cameras and where programming the firmware they were still, in their mind, in dslr way of thinking. They need to do it from scratch with all what they have learned until now and include AI. I mean why haven’t they even fixed the little thing of the focus box being so lagging behind where the focus actually is. I was so disappointed about that since the z9 was reviewed the first time. In the commercials the focus box seemed to work perfectly.
The e waste reason is fine, but these camera companies need to develop and release some sort of official dual charging solution like Fuji has. They seem to be the only one that released one what works with the charging cable (and power brick) that came with the camera.
Well I won't be canceling my Z8 order (they've been backordered for weeks in Canada) but I will consider the z6iii as a second body in a year or so if they don't announce a z7iii by then. I prefer to have the same megapixels and specs when switching between two body and lens combos in the field.
@@Digmen1 Agreed. It seems disingenuous to pose the battery charger short change as an environmental effort instead of a cost saving effort when they put the likely never used cable management plastic thing in every box.
Since you can, I'd like to request a comparison - image wise - between the Z6ii and the Z6iii. But dang it, on youtube, it's very hard to see much of a difference so it almost seems like a waste of time! Once you have really good glass on the camera you get very nice results - save for higher ISO's (maybe that is what you'll have to do). One thing this camera has done for me......I have dusted off my Z7 and Z6ii and started playing with them again. They are out of the rotation for my serious work - and frankly I think the Z6iii could replace my Z8 (perhaps I should have waited.....gah!). I am tempted though.....
Hey, thank you very much for the video! Just a curiosity, just the other day I read a post on DPReview, in a thread were a user who just got a Z6 III and posted some pictures, comparing its dynamic range to the Z6, and the Z6 had a better Dynamic range, ISO and less colour noise. To be clear, test were extreme, he underexposed to -6 EV, but still. Hence I would like to ask you way you were so astonished by the quality, it seems to be on par if not worst of the previous cameras. This seems to also be proved by some graph out there; as of today, staked sensor reduce, even if just a bit, Dynamic Range. Or am I missing something? If needed, I can obviously link out the source. I would really like to read your opinion. Thanks.
I have a simple question on evf quality. My Z 5 has a very good evf. I mean I was sold on the Z system after testing the evf and thinking "this looks amazing". What type of advantage does Z 6 III evf have over other Z cameras? Why are people excited over the new evf?
Most dots of any Nikon, around 2 million more. Brightest on the market Large amount of colours High refresh rate. Indeed Nikon make great EVF's and this one is even better :)
Really curious about your comment re AI enlargement. Do you mean stuff like the Lightroom Enhance upressing process? I use a Z7ii for landscape and it is looking vaguely like Nikon is not intending to produce a Z7iii which i have been waiting for. The Z6iii with expanding stills file size could be an option.
Howdy Geoff, I plan to make a video about this including pixel shift. Gigapixel is also an option. I have had good success with importing RAW into photoshop and scaling to 200%
Hello Matt , I hope you and your family are super well😉. Concerning the Z6III , i will certainly purchase one .For me it is the "Mature" middle range perfect camera. If you have time , can you show us what the différence in low light situation between Z6II and Z6III sensor . If i inderstand right nikon communication , , the new sensor is better in speed but also in low light situation (exspeed 7 treatment ?) I think this can be really interresting and can also explain why Nikon decide to keep this way (stack or alf/stack) and not the global sensor way (like sony) for this middle segment.
I certainly want to explore more, and perhaps it is also to do with where DUAL gain lies with the sensor. More testing soon. :) Thank you family are well, as I hope yours are too :)
If it was supposed to be charged by usb c, then the flap should have been seperate.. 😑.. nikon rubber flaps for the ports get damaged so fast.. and I sell my old camera to buy the new one.. so obviously i don’t have the charger
It's weird, I have been using this type of camera since 2004 (D70), and I can't recall my rubber ever failing. I suppose we all use our cameras in different ways, in different conditions.
The Z6 III appears to be a great camera (with 100% better AF than the Z6 ii) but it all comes down to what is your use case. For some its gonna be the camera for others the Z8 or Z9 will still be a better choice. Always look at your camera of choie by your use case and not market tactics. Great job by Matt on the recent videos.
Matt is right with the EU regulation about E-waste in his video. Also Apple had to change their "right-for-repair" policies and was forced to use USB-C to be compatible and interchangeable. All manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, Sony are following this "no charger included" policy.
regarding the speed of the expeed 7: it might not be 100% the case that it is running with the same speed like in the Z8/9. a processor in this power range produces a lot of heat as well and that depends on the clock speed. 2GHz creates much more heat than running it with 1GHz. that higher clock frequency has several disadvantages: 1. it drains the battery faster 2. it needs a bigger cooling system witch is also more expensive. when having less pixel to calculate, you can turn down the clock to half the frequency of the Z8/9 and save money on cooling and give the customer a better battery lifetime. theoretically they could even lower the supply voltage of the chip a tiny bit at a lower speed and even save more power.
Great points Stefan, it is interesting to think about what could be done with the Expeed7 and less pixels. Perhaps you are spot on regarding the clock speed, and that allows more power for the brighter EVF. But that also might be happening due to the ongoing advancements in OLED / LED / EVF tech. Just so hard to know what they are doing with power allocation and CPU allocation.
