Zack Arias: Depth of Field 

This is 5 minuets of a 3 day seminar, I have watched it, and it is pretty amazing. Zack Arias is an accomplished photographer who breaks down every aspect of the trade, from simple things like this to the inverse square law and its use in lighting set ups. Watch it, cos I said so!

I tried my em1 with 40-150mm at f4 (at150mm) against my canon 50mm at f1.4; I adjusted to get the same distance to my subject for canon 50mm and the 150mm from olympus. surprisingly I almost got the same DOF from 150mm f4 and 50mm at f1.4. He forgot to mention, you can also increase the DOF if your sensor is smaller just like a m4/3. At f4 (150mm) I had the same result from canon's f1.4 (50mm -- full frame).

Exactly..the focal length (if the subject is the same size in the frame) does not affect the DOF in any appreciable manner.

@maciousyuzz Actually I'm fairly sure it doesn't. It changes the feild of view but the focal length stays the same. Just think, if you took a photo with a 70-200 2.8 at 200mm and f/2.8 and crop it, the depth of field doesn't change. Thats why they are called crop sensors. With medium format think about shooting a 90mm at 2.8 but having a 50mm field of view with the 90mm DOF.

i thing you forgot one thing.. the size of camera sensor..influence the DOF as well..(eg fulframe camera and cropped frame camera has diferent DOF, as well as medium format and large format..) isn't it right zack?

with all do respect to Zack Arias, why is everybody so thankfull? maybe the photography is not your thing,becouse its a fundamental hes talking about. Well its a great explanation it is. well done

I don't think different lenses give differend perspectives. moving your camera does :)

Why everybody still teach about focal length in case of DOF? It's only depends on aperture and reproduction ratio! How we could tell something about DOF difference with 20 and 200mm if we don't talk about distance? We have a group of people or nose of one of them ni that case...completely different shots. One thing is important - perspective. It's different on 20 and 200mm and that's why long lens shots looks a bit cleaner and shallow.

what about sensor size? FF gives you much smaller DOF than crop sensor in e.g.. point and shoot

why would everyone know this? the only ones who are familiar with this would the ones like me who are over 30 and studied photography in school using manual film cameras. Im pretty sure most digital users have not rolled film before or develop prints. Its a new age and Im glad (pardon the term) newbies are taking an interest enough to learn these things. I say good for them. not everyone is from the darkroom ages and using cameras with no batteries, auto functions or even a light meter.

No, no no!!! Why do 'experts' keep talking about having lots of things 'in focus'? As this is a serious class, let's get it right.... the camera, like our eyes, will only ever, ever, focus on one specific spot. However, the part of the image closer / further away from this point which is acceptably sharp, is the depth if field.
