This was actually common in some places. My Great-Grandmother, who was born at the Akwesasne Mohawk reservation, named one of her son's after her father's last name and her maiden name, Gorrow. Even though that was his first name, everyone knew him as Sonny, but it wasn't at all uncommon among Native Americans to name kids with a first name that was originally, a last name. My son's middle name, is actually one of my ancestor's first name of Dillivan.

„Zahn“ means tooth in German, and is an - albeit not very common - German surname. Very interesting genealogy!
