Mike hikes to Zapata Falls in southern Colorado and explains what it means to "activate a park" with his ham radio. Then, in a repeat performance, he climbs to a high peak and activates Great Sand Dunes National Park with Parks on the Air (POTA), again! Is this guy an outdoorsman, or a total nerd? Maybe a little of both? LOL!!

About Us:
Hi! We're Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!
We built a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible. Bussy was never meant to be parked in a driveway, waiting for weekend trips or holiday getaways. After we finished the build, we packed everything we kept into the bus and drove away from our old house and into the world of off-grid living, aka boondocking, and endless travel adventures!
Since we planned to be boondocking the majority of the time, we made choices such as; a 100-gallon water tank, an Air Head composting toilet, a 1500w solar power system with 1000Ah in AGM batteries, etc. We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, from our Skoolie Build Series, to infinite buslife adventures beyond!

You are reminding me of my High School Electronics class (1976), our teacher was a ham radio fan and would show us how it worked. We talked to people all over the country and internationally. Fun stuff.

Thanks for taking us where I could not go. Reminds me when I had a cb radio. Talking to truck drivers etc. I had a VW bug at that time. Late 70s. I put a 10 ft whip antenna on the bug right above the engine cover. When i was driving the antenna would lean way over..

I never knew about the Sand Dunes park until I saw another bus crew do a vid. They rented the boards in town to use for the day. Too bad Mama Kitty didn't get to play in them. 😻 Our leaves are so late changing in western NY this year. We've been waiting a couple of extra weeks to be able to film. 🍂🍁 This was an awesome episode. 💕 Love the format of some ham radio stuff and a national park and the back and forth of the story from two vantage points really works. 💖 Hubby thought the bees were 'duking it out'. 🤣🐝 -Aimee

Mike... don't stay too long at that elevation; It is stressful for the heart. I had a heart attack at 6,000 ft in NV and 2 doctors told me to get under 2500... jus' saying. Aloha

When we were kids my dad was stationed at Holoman AFB NM. We would use cardboard to slide down the sand dunes at White Sands. My maternal grand mother who lived wth us and was about 81 would climb the dunes and slide down with me and my brother.

The last time I backpacked at Philmont scout ranch by Cimarron New Mexico, I left Basecamp with 62 lbs. on my back. After 65 miles and thousands of feet in altitude change, I arrived at Basecamp with 49 lbs. I can sympathize with you.

When i was younger my friends and i lived in a small town and we would play hide in seek in our cars and give out vague hints where we were on CB radios. I loved it when we got into ham radio. Best part about ham radio back then was you could use the number pad to make telephone calls to land lines. It's been so many years now ive forgotten my call number for ham, but seeing you do this makes me wanna dig it out of storage and start again.

This POTA hobby done Mike style will either get you in terrific shape or kill you. I guess it depends on what you eat and drink afterward and how hard you push yourself. A sled would have been handy for sure. Very cool video guys. I'm jelly. Very very jelly.

Went to GSD when I was 13. My poor 9 year old brother didn't know the difference between being constipated and having diarrhea and asked my mom for X-lax. He was not constipated and then couldn't leave the RV...

I love that part of the country. My first teaching job was in Del Norte, Colorado. Also where I met my husband almost 42 years ago. Camped at the Sand Dunes as a child. The F-16's were amazing!!! Now I'm ready to go back with hubby!! Hopefully he'll retire next spring and we can hit the road. Time to get the RV out of storage!!

Me and my brother and a couple friends we do dual sport off-road motorcycle riding hundreds of miles at a time through the desert and regular radios don’t work we have BaoFeng UV-5R Ham Radios and they work amazing. Ours are only good for like 20 miles but it would be cool to get something a little bigger and talk to people far away or be stuck in a situation in the middle of nowhere and be able to reach out and get help etc. etc.

Talked a lot of CB back in my younger days but never ham. With your license, couldn't you contact Kerry with your ham instead of walking closer with the FMRS radio?

kerry does not have a ham radio license but I do have a gmrs license and that does allow Kerry to talk.

It was a 30 gallon compressor but I believe it was a two piston. There were times I did have to wait for the pressure to come up but not very often.

@@BussyMcBusface I've heard that truckers have a "channel" in one of the ham bands that they use. So few even have a CB nowadays not to mention a ham radio. That's what I do. I hear the FCC just made FM legal for CB a few months ago, that could be interesting once they come out with legal US CBs with FM
