One reason he may have been against drugs is that his bandmates got into them and it fucked up his tours! Can you imagine finally getting a group together to play your own compositions and when you tour, they're off looking for coke/crack? It must have been so frustrating for him.
no he barred his band from using drugs as he did not want to have trouble with law enforcement or border crossings at all ever at any point as it would mess up his tours if was not to do with wanting the band to not be looking for drugs.. he just didn't want a tour to be messed up by getting stopped from getting into a country or police arresting people in countries he said this in interviews
People talk about courage usually in relation to being able to "fight for your country"...but I think nothing takes more courage in this world than risking being your authentic self and sticking with what you believe despite the the barrage of misunderstandings and criticism. Zappa never deviated from that
I thought back one day and have yet to change my mind. If Perot had picked Zappa as a running mate, this country could have finally been as the founding fathers intended. Perot would have been the brains, Zappa the heart...
He also liked beer. He died of prostate cancer, which affects even nonsmokers, so there is no definite connection there. However, you are right that it was his drug of choice and a poor one at that.
@@clintstewart5545 I don't think legality had anything to do with it. Zappa wasn't the type to think one should blindly comply with authority. The difference was preference.
@@waynegrabert6839 Not trying to be argumentative, but I think it's clear Frank drank very little. Cigs and coffee made Frank's world go 'round (in addition to music, of course).
Also if ya dig and enjoyed this video 😀 you may also enjoy the song " Most of All " By Glenn Kaiser and Where Roses Grow Live by Rez Band Awesome songs check them out. I remember hearing the song by Led Zepp " In My Time of Dyin " during my drug years and made me think about death and Jesus. Then a hippy friend that dug Jesus told me more of Jesus love and forgiveness and how I could also know Jesus love. So in 1981 I cried out to Jesus and wow man He came into my life and I had and have so much joy and peace and now know that through Jesus when I die I will be with Him in Heaven. Hey Jesus loves each of you also and yall can know Him if you are at all open. Just cry out to Him and a good question to ask yourself if you were to die today would you go to heaven ? And if yes why ? To find out more please read the Gospel of John in the Bible or check out the movie on RU-vid. 😀
Not frequently, they said a handful of times he would smoke with them then just go off to bed. Later he said his experiences with weed were that it just hurts his throat and makes him sleepy and he didn't see any benefit to it.
There's a difference between doing drugs and promoting them. Rock stars can do drugs all they want because their money and status largely protect them from the consequences (prison, financial ruin, social ostracism...). They can lay about all day nodding most of the year until their production company drags them into the studio to record an album every year or so. You can't do that when you have to hold a real job. No high price lawyer or record exec hushing things up with authorities when you get caught.
I love Frank Zappa. I was in high school when 'Apostrophe' and "Overnight Sensation' (my favorite albums of his) came out. Unfortunately, Frank was in denial about his own deadly drug addiction -- tobacco.
C'mon we all know there's a big difference between using drugs that alter your behaviour, your mindset, your experiences, and tobacco that doesn't get you high. Why we pretending otherwise as if we're missing the point?
@@inputimmersion9577 as if tobacco doesn't alter your mindset and behavior, essentially it's an adult pacifier. you get upset or impeded in someway you lean back on nicotine, it changes your brain chemistry in a way you don't recognize or realize until you're too addicted or trying to quit
@@michaelshannon3136 Hilarious that you can't see how someone smoking a cigarette and smoking crack are different. You're just angling for an internet debate. You're on your own mate.
@@geoffpoole483 FZ was fairly well known for TGIF Margarita Night! get-togethers in his later years. Though I never witnessed it firsthand, I have it on good authority that Frank had a drink or two now and again.
Zappa used to stay up for multiple days sometimes, obviously, he used tons of coffee and cigarettes to stimulate himself and stay awake. Just a very different person than the majority of people who sure like to rest and not work as much.
Unique, indeed. Me not agree with every little thing he said, but (in addition to great music) I feel he had an important perspective. Call me a fanboy, but truly believe the entire world would benefit had FZ reluctantly agreed to loiter on planet earth a few more decades.
Saw his longtime sidekick Ike Willis and Co play at World Cafe in Philly a few years back. Played all of Zappas tunes. Thats when I found out Gail had died.

@@martinbrodie8507 Zappa was a bit of a nut in some cases. He literally said he views tobacco like a vegetable. Something he just needs to smoke. Almost the exact rational any drug user has for their own drug use
I NEVER DID TOO MANY DRUGS. I'M RETIRED AS A SOUND BOOM OP. OUT OF NYC, AND STILL TAKE UP THE CAUSE OF FRANK, AND BOULEZ. "THE PRESENT DAY COMPOSER, REFUSES TO DIE".
The late Brian Ingoldsby told us during an engineering class that during the Hot Rats sessions, a musician was smoking a joint and offered it to Frank. Frank happily took it... and stubbed it out on the guy's arm
He was against drugs but produced horrible sounds that only a hardcore drug addict would listen to. He hated his fans because he thought they were all stupid.
I think Zappa would have been pretty chill had he smoked weed instead of cigarettes. The guy was always so 1950's-esque uptight about everything, but had this huge creative talent at the same time. He needed to hang with Willie and Ozzy and Louis Armstrong for a couple nights.
Interesting choice of words, didn't say he was not religious(private-personal),said he wasn't a religious Fanatic. He & Stanley Kubrick were often depicted as wacko-eccentric types, but were essentially Family Men.Not Ozzie &Harriet, orthe Cleavers, but Family Men:)Ain't life strange?:)
Ahh nooo.. Zappa was an atheist. Do just a little bit of research.. “My best advice to anyone who wants to raise a happy, mentally healthy child is: Keep him or her as far away from a church as you can.” "Take the Kama Sutra. How many people died from the Kama Sutra as opposed to the Bible? Who wins?" - Frank Zappa #quote #quotes
Church ≠ Religious Also the big note stuff on lumpy gravy, has some religious tendencies and reminds me a bit of goethe. Also there is an interview of him, where he talks about religion. Don't want to misquote him. It is from the 80s with larry king
@@leonasert2276 Holy Man& St Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast have a religious bent-He Rightfully hated the hypocritical tele-vangelist who were everywhere in Reagan's 80's.I just believe Frank was THE BEST GUITARIST EVER-Packard Goose from Joe's Garage just destroys me in a beautiful way-it's so melodic & gorgeous.
I'm somewhat surprised that he said he wasn't a Democrat because he was certainly far more liberal than conservative on most issues. Then again, he probably thought all politicians were worthless and didn't want to be associated with either party.
Of course Frank did use one of the worst and most pointless "drugs" on the planet , aka cigarettes , and was extremely addicted to regular fixes of Nicotine.

I think drugs and alcohol are humane. I'd even consider using some type of substance on farm animals before harvesting them for meat. I just think it's a touch of grace on the less savory side of life.

Zappa's stance on drugs was the one thing about him I admired. Other than that, he was a hateful self-righteous hippie freak like all the rest of them.
If you think Zappa was a hippie, then your ignorance is overwhelming. Just because someone has long hair doesn't mean that they embrace the counter culture, which Zappa never did. Try getting out of the house a bit more there, Sparky - you might actually learn something. Thanks for the laugh. 🤣
