However when I wear it out it’s perceived as undone and unprofessional where as hers translates as bohemian/stylish. This is by no means criticism of her it’s just that kinky textured hair is acceptable sometimes when the person isn’t darker. This how ignorance takes place. The story is about natural hair and not kinky hair. Asians have they're own issues with natural hair. They are also under pressure to change their hair. Their hair tends to be heavier straighter and harder to style. They struggle with identity issues as well. They have a hard time finding stylist who can manage their hair. Eurocentric beauty standards forces them to feel out of place just like all of these women. That's why she is here. She is not out of place. She can relate in a different way. Educate yourself a put yourself in someone else's shoes for a change.

And it was nice. It made me feel human. Not that I needed her validation...Black people tell me that all the time. But when the rest of the world acknowledges Black as beautiful too, it just feels...nice...human. And I told her that her long blonde curls were beautiful too...because they are. Because we all are...just beautiful women. Wow women are beautiful.

Little Tangerine Little Tangerine That’s the whole problem. Having natural hair out is hard man. Kids in my school always play a game with my hair. They would always put staples all over my hair and see how much rolled up paper they can fit in my hair. I hate hate hate that people feel entitled to touch our hair! So rude and disrespectful. Kids at school used to finger my hair and say it felt like wool and crap like that. I was so innocent and unaware I just kind of accepted that, as the only black girl in my class, I was an object of curiosity. Now at 30 I still have coworkers reaching into my head when I let my curls out, but it annoys me more now. I wish I could have expressed that at your age. It's good you're aware that it's not right. You don't deserve to be treated like that.

Someone touching any part of you without your consent is NOT okay. I know it can be difficult sometimes to advocate for your personal space, but please tell those people to leave you alone and to stop touching you if you don't want them too. Also, I don't know you, but I can confidently say that whatever texture your natural hair is and whatever it looks like, it's beautiful!

Kids are horrible ! As a kid my mom told me to tell ppl to not touch my hair& to slap their hands away if they did!! I rarely had to fight to defend against bullies but the bullies were either fascinated or just nasty & mean by my hair. Most of the time it was just jealousy. Unfortunately most school age kids tease but some are waaay meaner than others!!Sometimes you have to confront them bc once they see you aren't pushing back...you become the thing the like to tease & torture everyday. You gotta either ignore them or stand up to them. I was never a fighter and I NEVER picked a fight but if they stick stuff in your hair ? Take it out and throw it back at them!! I was a sarcastic kid so I'd turn their jokes back on them! Make them look corny or stupid...They'd get mad or embarrassed and leave me alone..but sometimes you gotta defend yourself!! You gotta speak up eventually!

I relate to this sooooo much! I’m from Brazil and my mom would use relaxers on my hair since I was 5. Until a year ago, when I decided to go natural, I honestly had no idea of how my hair looked like. My big chop and the months following it (now lol) were a big shock to me, in the best and most painful way really haha. Women like them were and are so important to me in the process of loving myself and my natural hair. One of the main reasons of starting my journey was seeing all these beautiful women rocking their natural hair. My hair is short now and I am still in the process of fully loving and embracing it, but seeing videos like these give me so much strength. And what Zazie said about if everyone mixed together, people would be brown with curly hair is sooo true. This is the reality of most of the population in Brazil, since we're fundamentally a mixed-raced country. The majority of the women in here have curly hair, even white ones. It’s awesome that there’s also a strong natural hair movement in Brazil, that has been getting bigger and bigger. I feel like we are evolving and it’s so refreshing. My biggest hope is that one day no black girl or any girl with curly/kinky hair grows up hating her hair and we can all acknowledge beauty in all textures.💖

If I wear my hair as an Afro to work to this day it is considered unkempt and unprofessional so I put it into a bun which damages my hair. At all 3 of the jobs before this one, my managers would call me out to personally tell me that my hair looked wild. I once even dyed it blond and was then told I was a q-tip. I'm honestly ok with it looking cool over looking like trash to so many people for so long. I remember in middle school when I first stopped getting relaxers and wearing my hair natural boys would tell me if I rubbed my hands, legs or elbows together that I would set my dry hair on fire. When in actuality it was way more moisturized due to oily and greasy hair products (back before all of these natural hair products we have now when grease was the black motto for hair care). It hurts because being light skinned you feel less black because people may feel slightly more comfortable talking to you but that doesn't justify the stupid shit you hear when you have a wider nose, and kinky hair that stands up instead of falling down.

Well said. I'm sorry you went through that but thank God there are even simple pop culture things like Black Panther, Luke Cage and Zazie being Domino in Deadpool 2 that are helping people see that black is also beautiful. I may live in a place where minorities are the majority in my lil corner of California but even when I was teaching people how to interview for jobs and stuff like that I never thought to tell someone with curly hair to undermine it by straightening it or something like that. I always pretty much told them tips about being "groomed" rather than specific about what it "needs" to look like for employers. Thankfully my co-worker that taught the classes with me is black so he knew the ins and outs of weaves and other similar hairstyles like that better than I did so he gave his expertise on the subject too.

When I was growing up I had a serious afro. Kids nicknamed me both "Carpethead" and "Rughead". Once I got someone patting the top of my hair like a microphone saying "Testing, testing,1,2,3." It is annoying. But relish in the beautiful hair God gave you. Its a gift.

What’s sad is you see black people on here fighting over which color is prettier. I saw all beautiful black women of various degrees of black. In the comments I see “She’s mixed” or “The darkest one is the finest” if white people didn’t exist black people would still be prejudice against one another by skin color. It’s sad really. All of these black women were fine as hell to me because each one showed beautiful diversity of blackness.

Warrior614 Nope. That's isn't true. It's a deep history behind why black people say things like that. No excuse but it's from a cause (slavery) and the effect is the influence it had on the black community. It all comes from a deep psychological place

Ivy Nichole many of my friends are African of various countries. They talk about how long before white men various tribes did t like one another. It’s a human trait. Did slavery mess up blacks? No doubt. But human ways of thinking are also messed up. Thanks for sharing your ideas though.

I love Black women with NATURAL HAIR. Period. Whenever I see the phony hair or wigs I get instantly turned off. It ruins the entire look of a Black woman. Whatever the reason they get it is on them. I don't have to like it though. :P To me, making fake hair a "norm" just ruins so much for me. Especially considering how natural hair and its history is so beautiful. Whenever I hear the word wig, I think about my late grandmother and the few wigs she had on a Styrofoam head. She would use them to go out. And I still associate wigs to a senior than I do anyone else. LOL So fake hair is just a turn off.

As of now that I’ve cut them, I told her that now I want to grow out my natural hair because I’ve never seen my natural hair grown out, because as a kid, she had always made me get hair cuts, and we recently had an argument about me growing out my natural hair.
