Ive seen someone use spotlight the same way you added the plane reference images. That way he could use reference images that were not perfect front or side views. It seemed really handy, so I am trying to figure out how he did it. But most spotlight video's i find are mostly the way you use it. Slapping the images on the side just to look at. Or use the images to paint on the model.

I like the see-through method. It seems to me the most practical.
