Today we're going to calibrate the Zebra ZM400 printer. As always, make sure that the paper path is clear of any obstructions and there are no stuck labels inside the print mechanism. Take a good look underneath the media dancer assembly to make sure that there's no paper or anything stuck under it or anything that might indicate that it is blocking the media sensor. It's a good idea to keep that dancer assembly clean of adhesive, also.
Load the media in the path shown here. Make sure that the ribbon is loaded properly. Here, you can see that the ribbon is loaded on the supply spindle. The ribbon goes underneath the print head and over to the ribbon take-up assembly. On any Z-Series Zebra printer, make sure that after you've loaded the ribbon, that it covers all the way over to the left edge of the printer as you're looking at it. The reason is because the ribbon sensor is right on this side on the inside of the frame. If the ribbon does not cover that sensor, it will give you a ribbon out.
From the front panel of the printer, press the Setup/Exit key. Press the + key until you come to Media and Ribbon. Press the Select button and press the + key as indicated by the Calibrate button to calibrate. Now it tells you to load the backing. To load the backing, pull a label or two off the liner, open up the print head, pull just the liner through until just liner is underneath the red light. Press the + button to continue.
It says to remove the ribbon. You don't necessarily have to completely remove the ribbon. Open up the print head, expose that plate so that you do not have any ribbon on this side of the printer. Press the + sign to continue. Now the printer will calibrate. This it says to reload all. Open up the print head, straighten out your ribbon as mentioned before, pull your labels and media through. Make sure your ribbon is all the way over to the left. Close the print head. Press the + sign to continue. Your printer has calibrated.
To see how well your printer calibrated, press the Setup/Exit button and press the + key until you come to Sensor Profile. Press the Select button, press the + sign to print. The printer has just completed printing a graphical representation of how it sees the media, the gaps between the media, and the liner. You'll see a good baseline with nice spikes indicating that it's getting a good voltage spike or a light intensity though the liner. The black even square at the end shows a nice, even pitch on how it sees the ribbon. If the top of this graph was ragged, you may get a lot of ribbon out errors. Here it's nice and straight, so there will be no ribbon out errors on this printer.

Monica, Check to make sure the cards are printing OK. If any part of the image is compressed your local tech is probably right. Otherwise, clean the printer, i.e.. rollers, printhead. Perform the cleaning utility that Zebra provides with cleaning cards that you can purchase from Zebra.

We are having an issue where the zebra zm 400 prints correctly and prints three runs correctly and then prints two blank sheets afterwards, even though all settings are correct. What is the solution to this problem?

Bill, thanks for the video. I have a ZM400 and had to replace the front panel. After replacing panel, I can't seem to get the printer to calibrate properly on any rolls. I'm trying to set up a 4x6 roll currently and it feeds about an inch past where it should stop. I'm using a precut die sticker and have the printer set for gap/notch. It wont calibrate for any stickers we use. Thanks for any help you can give. Chad..

Nice video! My problem is the printer displays a "Head Open" error condition. The head is closed.Where is the open head sensor? How can I tell (other than the message) if this sensor is working or not? Thanks, Bill

+Bill Bukovec The head open sensor is on a small metal mount located alongside the ribbon sensor. When you open the printhead and look into the printer you will see it. The sensor emits an infrared light that is reflected off a chrome strip. If the chrome strip is not clean you get the error. Other causes is that the sensor is faulty or the sensor mount is bent.

Hi Bill, we have a problem with our printer not sure if you can help? If the printer stays idle for 2-3 days without using it, the setting will go back to default setting which the Darkness will go back to 10 and the Print Width back to 50. This will cause the printer to print a blank label. We have to set the Darkness to 27 and Print Width to 105 08/12 and save it to Permanent then cycle the power, but it will go back to 10 Darkness and 50 Width again if were' not using the printer for a couple days. You have any idea? Thanks.

You’ll need to take off the electronics cover and inspect the belt snd make sure the pulley is secure

Bill, what causes the printer front bar to keep popping out when you print? I am referring to the bar with the handle, if you tape the handle so it will not pop open it'll work fine. Just wondering what causes this?

As often as needed. Many times reloading media or ribbon moves sensors so check your sensors that they are tracking on the media. Also, be sure the ribbon is in place properly and the chrome strip behind the printhead is clean.

We have a ZM600 zebra printer. I was told that our printer can read a eye mark. Ive tried setting up the printer to do this but I cant get it to pick up the eyemark. I have some stock with the mark printed on the top side of the stock, I moved the red laser eye under it. I tried calibrting it and set the options to mark instead of continuous. Ive set my labelview file to be a mark as well. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Bill, I saw your suggestions to several users. I wonder if you can help me with the problems of my Zebra P120i. It creates squeak sound when print the cards. Local tech said belt needs to replace. Can you help?

Hi Bill My ZM400 keeps skipping labels, about 6 of them before printing the label? i have tried the calibration but does not work. Please let me know what else i can do

Make sure there is nothing blocking the sensor and the sensor is moved out from the inside at least 1/2”. Calibrate per the video. If this doesn’t work the media sensor needs replacement. Also make sure the media tracks straight and doesn’t walk side to side

Hey bill, I'm having a weird issue with my zm400. When I adjust the template. The first one prints high and all the others print too low. I've pushed the template as high as it will go but it keeps dropping. To the point where I can hardly print.

Hi Bill I have a ZM400 and for all labels that I send to print is cutting the bottom of the label. I Have checked all configurations in the printer and change for another printer (same model) confirming that the problem is in the printer and not in the layout of the label. I already reset for default configuration and the problem still. could you help me?

+erliac Is the maximum label length set at the maximum? Did you calibrate the printer for the label? Is your driver set for the correct DPI. Did you check the condition of the belt? Is the media sensor set for gap, auto, or reflective? If you have gaps between labels it should be set for gap.

Bill, thanks for your video. I have a problem with my zebra ZM400, not want to print anything. Performs the movement of the label and ribbon but not printed. I tried to print the test label, and the fonts, bar codes, etc list and does not transfer anything to the label. I think it's a problem with the headprint, what do you think about it?. +José De Abreu , Check to make sure you have the right type of ribbon for your printer. Zebra ribbons are coated side out but you may have a ribbon that has the coating on the inside. Try flipping the ribbon so the other side comes into contact with the paper. One other thing. Check the darkness and speed settings.

+malditapublicidad Is the red light for the sensor 'on' as indicated on the video? Are there any labels blocking the sensor assembly?. Did you do a sensor profile test? Did you do a factory reset? If you still have problems you can send it into us for repair.

my ZM400 is not spinning the white roll and the ribbon anymore. the white roll is rolling freely by hand. what could be?

Fabio, Your belt is broke. Open the case. One screw inside when you open the cover. About 4 small screws in the back. You may need a flathead screwdriver to pry up the electronics cover. Your belt will probably be laying in the bottom of the printer.

I have another one ZM400 with abnormal behavior . When I do print some few labels, the ZM400 does all right, but when I do print more then 100 labels, it prints around 30 and stop without any error message. it happens always. Any idea?

Fabio Leao Fabio. Same as before. Your belt may need replacement. If it is good you may want to try a factory reset. Another problem may be your software. Try putting the printer where a known good printer is and try it out. If the problem follows the printer then of course it is a printer problem (I'd try this first). If not, check your software.

check your computer and driver installed.. also restart your label printer from the power swtich .. try setting up another pc .. if its not doing this on the second pc then its a computer issue

If you have not replaced the printhead already, then chances are it is a bad flat cable form main logic board to printhead

Then the error is caused by either a bad data cable to the printhead. If you inspect it you will probably find a spot on the cable that is worn through or grounded to the frame.
