Iria: Zeiram the Animation holds a close and very special place in my heart, as it was THE anime which made me a life-long fan, with the irony being Zeiram (Toku) was what later got me into Tokusatsu later on in life.
I remember watching this movie on the Scifi channel way back in the day and, even though I couldn't remember the title, the film itself always stuck with me. Especially the visual designs.
You prolly dont care but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can watch all of the new series on Instaflixxer. I've been watching with my brother for the last months xD
Thank you for spreading word of the almighty cult franchise known as Zeiram. Seriously though, seeing a video on Iria/Zeiram is always appreciated. I definitely enjoyed this. The OVA series was my first exposure to anime and so the franchise has a close place to my heart. Also I had no idea the creator went on to make other franchises. I guess I never thought to look into his work beyond Zeiram. I'll be sure to check it out.
I’m glad you explained ‘tokusatsu’ cause I was unfamiliar with the term Always knew there was this uniquely Japanese genre of action movies with special effects and costumes, just never heard the name of it
watched this movie as kid mean 20 years + ago, in my memories the lead actress was so so cool and beautiful, after all this years i got in to japanese movies , manga , anime music muste be thank to this movie. now im 34 year old and rewatch this movie , i am right Yūko Moriyama ( the lead actress) were so beautiful not only in my memory, i mean she still pretty much beautiful to today beauty standard, meaning that movie was ahead of time
Holy shit. I've been trying to find out what this movie was for 20ish years. I remember catching it a lot when I was around 10. Never knew what the name was. Thanks for solving one of the oldest questions of my life.
This was a random film from blockbuster my dad rented in the 90s. Scared the shit outta me then, but I was intrigued. Thanks to the internet as an adult I was able to revisit the film and discover the anime. I love it now
I never heard of Garo so i'm so happy I watched this video. With all the anime titles being scooped up by Hollywood maybe we will get a Zeiram reboot eventually.
I didn’t know the word tokusatsu! I love the Iria anime and I found your video bc RU-vid thought I’d like it bc I watched part of Zeiram. I never knew the anime was a spinoff! I always thought this was a live action version of it
Vanishing Line is the third anime series for Garo, which also has a slew of other tokusatsu series and movies. The anime mostly stands by itself, but I'd still recommend starting with the first live action series.
The franchise that first got me into the works of Keita Amemiya (long before I heard about Garo); a lot of people seem to like the anime better, whereas I have always felt that without Keita Amemiya's cool special effects (not to mention Kamiya and Teppei as more relatable human elements), the anime just doesn't quite work as well as the movies (also, not having Z-Walk, the cool, creepy Shinto chanting in the background whenever Zeiram was onscreen in the anime was a mistake).
Recently finished watching Zeiram 2, and both are pretty solid movies in general. Agree the simple premise, and creative set pieces being the biggest appeal to this series. Another element that eventually won me over were the comedy relief characters. I didn't find all their jokes funny, but the way they were portrayed, and written did come across genuine to me. Feeling like they were actually good friends. So it was rewarding seeing Teppei, and Kamiya both progress as people in they every day life in Zeiram 2. A small detail that I appreciated a lot since comedy relief characters in tent pole movies like these are generally treated like an after thought. I had a better experience watching Zeiram 2 since I had more appropriate expectations going into it. I expected the first movie to have more to its story than what it actually did which took a while before I got into what it was going for. In terms of preference I can't choose one over the other as being better. On a scale I would give them both the same rating. I prefer the special effect work of the first film slightly more simply because there was so much Zeiram arsenal that I had no clue what to expect, especially that deadly hat hahaha. I also found the the jokes in Zeiram 1 more memorable overall. The moment where one of the comedy relief makes a grand entrance with a excavator to save his friend from getting killed by Zeiram only to fumble on using it unexpectedly had me laughing hysterically. Zeiram 2 on the other hand I prefer the action sequences, and story more. With a few more additional characters that were added like Zeiram new partner, and that weird Voodoo Witch Alien in the beginning made the story feel more eventful to me. Especially towards the end as it kept throwing one curve ball after another. Iria I felt was pushed harder in Zeiram 2 to beat her foe be it a hard fought brief sword fight, and pulling a kamikaze technique with a grenade when the zone reaches closer to disappearing. Both had the appeal of the soundtrack, world, costume & monster design, and especially Iria herself being a bad. Would have liked to learn more about her. Haven't seen the anime OVA, but given I liked the live action movies I'll eventually will. Keita Amemiya was clearly passionate about making some entertaining movies, and he succeeded.
God do I live the first Film and liked the Anime. I would've loved for there to be a third film and especially one that doesn't rehash old concepts. The second one was close to being different, but it still played it safe. I'm more eager to see a new protagonist take Iria's place or at least do their own thing and try killing Zeiram as hard as they fucking can. I mean, the Anime really pushed Alot of Zeiram's strengths to the limit, but I definitely would like to see more going forward.
Great video! Zeiram is one of my favorite Tokusatsu series. Damn shame we never got the 3rd film. Here's some new news, Zeiram 2 is coming to Bluray in the US. Not sure why they didnt start with the first film but im not complaining. Hopefully the rest of his films will also get released on Bluray over here, especially Mirai Ninja. www.rightstufanime.com/Zeiram-2-Blu-ray
Love Zeiram! I purchased both DVDs along with all of the Amemiya releases way back when they came out from Tokyo shock. I've even asked Media Blasters if they would look into releasing Mirai Ninja on bluray as we've never gotten a proper japanese release in the US. Fingers crossed we get it. I do have good news! Media Blasters is releasing Zeiram 2 on Bluray on 9/22/2020. The reason 2 is coming first, is that both films are owned by two different companies, so they are working on securing the rights to release the first film. Please head over to Rightstufanime.com and get your bluray order in for Zeiram 2 it's only $14 bucks and will have some nice extras and the quality is going to be fantastic. Taken from the Japanese masters. Dont miss out! Also Hakaider will be coming to bluray next year from Media Blasters. So that's another one to look forward to .
That's technically the correct pronunciation. Most folks see the vowels and go with German pronunciation, when three of the Japanese vowels should be pronounced with an invisible 'h' after them.
Hard to understand, how someone who likes Zeiram 1, thinks shit like Garo is a successor to that? That CGI filled, soap opera garbage with shitty jrock as music.
